Merriam Webster dictionary defines confraternity as a society devoted to a religious or a charitable cause.
I certainly know from information available to all, that the pyrate confraternity is a charity organization,made up of like minds with the goal of creating an egalitarian society where the strong protects the weak and men are weighed by the strength of their character and not by the colour of their skins,religion or ethnicity. Little wonder why they are highly revered in and outside Nigeria for notable achievements in humanitarian activities and social reengineering.
I guess if this isn't a noble society of men,they likes of Prof Wole Soyinka and hundreds of notable men who associates with this group,could have dissociated for preservation of their reputation and image.

Professor Ade Ajayi, Vice Chancellor. University of Lagos, was the next in line to proscribe Students Confraternities on Campus, after some Students mustered courage and attacked Pyrates Confraternity (Walrus Deck) sally, over reported cases of excessive intimidation and molestation, it was a bloody attack, with both sides sustaining serious injuries, the Pyrates were the worse off and also suffered public humiliation, after being overrun by the large group of Students, captured Pyrates were striped naked and paraded around the campus. Other Institutions later proscribed Campus Cult, with Professor Banjo, Vice Chancellor of University of Ibadan, where Student Confraternity started in 1952, with the formation of the Pyrates Confraternity by seven (7) Students, (popularly referred to as the Magnificent seven) which included Prof Wole Soyinka (Captain Blood of Tortuga in Pyratical circles) Prof Bolanle Awe. Ralph Opara, Ikpebare Aig-Imokhuede, etc, being the last to proscribe Confraternities on Campus in 1985.

Pyrates never left deck, they were expelled from certain decks/tertiary institutions. The NAScapoon may have tried to save face but they have already been disgraced since the 70s

What Professor Wole Soyinka started was not a youth gang.

Some of the fraternities in universities turned into youth gangs and because of that Professor Soyinka ordered that there should be no Pyrates Fraternity in universities.

Those that still exist in universities are not part of the original Pyrates Fraternity (now known as National Association of Seadogs).

There are fraternities and sororities in Nigeria that are not youth gangs. I gave you an example, the Confraternity of Christian Mothers.

However, dangerous youth gangs exist in Nigerian universities and they've gotten worse because some of them have become mafia organisations.
