ASUU STRIKE: A NOTE TO NIGERIAN STUDENTS (a must read for all) | OSUN DEFENDER

I understand your pains, fellow Nigerian students. I just wish we had a better government in Nigeria, there wouldn’t have been any need for strike if government had been sincere and committed enough to implement the agreement it entered into with the union since 2009.
But shall we allow the rot in the system to persist all because we want to graduate on time? The “relatively cheap” education we enjoy in public universities today is the result of past struggles of students and staff unions who campaigned vehemently against the privatization and commercialization of public education. What sacrifice are we willing to make for the benefit of our children who will also aspire to get tertiary education? Do we wish that they continue with this rot?
What happens if the strike is called off without Federal Government meeting the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)?
1. Our educational sector will continue to suffer gross under-funding. ASUU is fighting for an improved funding of the sector coupled with a gradual increase in the budgetary allocation to education to meet up with the UNESCO recommended 26% as against the 8.5% allocated in the 2013 budget.
2. Education standard will continue to fall due to under-funding, poor teaching facilities, inadequate and poorly motivated teaching personnel etc.
3. There will be an exodus of the best brains in our universities to private and foreign universities that are willing to offer better remuneration and welfare packages to lecturers.
4. Students will continue to learn in uncondusive environment characterized by over-populated classrooms, ill-equipped libraries and laboratory etc.
5. The products of Nigerian Universities will continue to be referred to as ‘half baked graduates’ and ‘unemployable’ by employers.
6. No Nigerian university will make the top 20 in Africa or the top 1000 in the world.
Have we ever bothered to ask ourselves why President Jonathan, his ministers, state governors and other ruling elites enroll their children in foreign and private universities? It is because they recognize that there is rot in the system, and they are unwilling to remove the rot.
Only a serious commitment by the Federal Government can reverse this ugly trend. Government will never willingly fund education adequately except it is compelled to. Little wonder the budgetary allocations to education since the return to civil rule in 1999 remains below 10% despite the unrelenting campaign for adequate funding by ASUU and other stakeholders. Why can’t the sixth largest producer of crude oil in the world fund education adequately when other less advantaged countries like Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire spend 31% and 20% of their budget on education respectively? These are worrisome facts

Its simply provision of jobs

when there aren't enough jobs for university graduates, how do u expect a sec.sch graduate to get one?

starling: .
its very gud to have an idea of how ur dept is but pls try as much as possible to disregard negative ones, don't have this mindset that there r saddist in ur department..(its a psyco thing. So dnt c any lecturer as a saddist). I rembr my 100L 1st sem, my CHM112 lectr (dunno his name but we nicknamed him "AMEN?"wink he was not only who people call a saddist, he was also a wicked man that hated engnr students (i heard its because he applied 4 ChE but was given CHM @ FTMx).
We had 2 entirely diff materials to read (200+ n 80+ pages respectively) & past questions for test/exams. We begged him for AOC and he gave us but unfortunately 4 us he didn't set any questn from there. So there was mass failure in d test; ppl evn scored "0".... When it was time 4 exam he told us not to study radioactivity, we studied d entire material (incuding the part that was ment for 300L CHM dept) n most of all d radioactivity he had ask us not to read (u can imagine how large d topic is)......when d exam came they was no questn abt radioact...
Whn d result was out i had.."A"
also GST211 (logic n philo) a very boring class with a boring and inaudible lectre (Mr pragmatism). his class was always full because 200 n 100l offerd d course. He noticed he population was not as thick as it used to be. So he didn't give out hand out but swore that his quetions would be exactly what he thought in class so those that r depending on buyn hand out will fail
on the test day the questn we answerd was not his. (he said he was unable to submit his own questn because he travelld) so we had to answr d previous yr's exam questn; luckily for me some carry over female students seating beside b4 d exam had a strange kind of PQ that i had glace througt.
Whn d result was out i had "A".

Instead of u trying to discover all the saddist in ur departmnt, use that time to read online article that will prepare u for higher institution and also ask ur senior depatmentals what WORKED for them during their time
