The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development (FMLD) has distributed more than 1,000 livestock feed inputs to farmers across Bayelsa to boost livestock production, improve livelihoods and enhance food security.

The intervention was carried out on Saturday by the ministry’s Department of Ranch and Pastoral Resources Development.

The ministry disclosed this in a statement signed by Henrietta Okokon, Deputy Director, Information and Public Relations, and made available to newsmen on Sunday in Abuja.

According to the statement, the intervention included the distribution of groundnut cake and salt licks to livestock farmers in the state to support animal nutrition and improve productivity.

Representing the Minister of Livestock Development, Mr Idi Mukhtar Maiha, the Director, Ranch and Pastoral Resources Development, Dr Hakeem Ibilade, described the intervention as one of the ministry’s milestones in responding to the needs of livestock farmers across the country.

Ibilade said the intervention was informed by feedback received from farmers in Bayelsa, stressing that the ministry remained committed to a responsive and farmer-centred approach to the sustainable development of Nigeria’s livestock sector.

He urged beneficiaries to ensure proper and continuous utilisation of the inputs for the benefit of their livestock, communities and the state.

The director also encouraged the farmers to organise themselves into cooperative groups and associations to facilitate effective coordination and improve their access to future interventions and support programmes.

He urged the beneficiaries to take ownership of the items provided and use them responsibly to improve livestock productivity and contribute to the development of the livestock value chain in Bayelsa.

Also speaking, the ministry’s Zonal Coordinator, Dr Uyobong Uko, said the distribution of groundnut cake and salt licks was aimed at improving animal nutrition and boosting livestock production in the state.

Uko said the intervention was part of the minister’s commitment to improving the welfare and productivity of livestock farmers across the country.

He explained that similar interventions were being implemented in other parts of the country, reaffirming the ministry’s determination to ensure that livestock farmers benefited from government support irrespective of their location.

He assured the beneficiaries that the ministry would continue to explore additional interventions and support measures aimed at strengthening livestock production in Bayelsa.

“What you are receiving today is to support your livestock to thrive and perform better,” he said.

The State Coordinator, Dr Bamigboye Segun, said the programme was aimed at contributing to sustainable food security and ensuring the availability of nutritious livestock products in the state.

Bamigboye said increased livestock productivity would lead to greater availability of meat, eggs and milk, while creating employment opportunities and strengthening the livestock value chain.

He urged farmers to pay greater attention to the nutritional value of livestock products, stressing that deliberate investment in the livestock value chain would contribute significantly to addressing food security, employment generation and economic development.

He added that increased productivity in the sector could also create opportunities for the development of export-oriented livestock products, including hides and skins.

The beneficiaries commended the ministry for the intervention and appealed for additional support in the form of livestock production inputs, equipment and machinery to enable them expand their operations.

They said increased government support would enable farmers to contribute more effectively to the development of the livestock sector in Bayelsa.

The ministry reiterated its commitment to strengthening partnerships with livestock farmers and stakeholders across the country and implementing responsive interventions to improve productivity, enhance food security, create jobs and promote sustainable development of Nigeria’s livestock sector.

“One thing I can tell you about this big work is that, many people would not build something this massive when they could build mansions for themselves. Yet, he still lives more or less in a rented place and modestly because his heart is kingdom-first,” he said.

He further stressed the importance of sacrificial leadership and investment in God’s work, adding that leaders must set the example for those they lead.

“Kingdom-mindedness is not common in this generation, especially among founders. If you cannot invest in your own ministry, how do you expect your members to invest? People are watching your priorities and your commitment,” Ashimolowo stated.

Expressing his admiration for the project, he recalled his reaction when he first saw images of the completed facility.

“I had never been here before, but when they sent me pictures after the finishing touches were completed, I was overwhelmed. I found myself speaking in tongues because I did not know what else to do,” he added.

The newly dedicated Dreamland complex, located at Master’s City, KM 3 Refinery Road, Warri, Delta State, features two four-storey wings equipped with elevators, a central heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system, as well as a state-of-the-art main auditorium built to international standards.

The Middle-Belt Youth Congress has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and the hierarchy of the Nigerian Army over the approval of an Army Division in Benue State, describing the development as a significant step towards strengthening security operations across the state and the wider Middle-Belt region.

In a statement signed by its President, Obande Gideon, the group said the establishment of the Army Division would enhance the operational capacity of the Nigerian Army and provide greater support for ongoing efforts to combat banditry, armed attacks, and other forms of criminality in Benue and neighbouring states.

The Congress expressed concern over the renewed wave of attacks in parts of the Middle Belt, particularly in Benue and Kaduna States, noting that the situation requires sustained and coordinated action by security agencies and relevant stakeholders.

The group also called for increased aerial surveillance and intervention through the deployment of modern survey and combat drones to strengthen intelligence gathering, improve response time, and support security operations in vulnerable communities.

According to the Middle-Belt Youth Congress, there is also an urgent need for the recruitment of more personnel into the Armed Forces to boost the country’s security capacity in the face of growing threats.

The group further urged the Nigeria Police Force to reconsider the restrictions affecting the recruitment of graduates into the Force, stressing that the inclusion of more qualified personnel would contribute to improved professionalism, intelligence gathering, and effective policing.

The Congress called on citizens to continue providing credible and timely intelligence to security agencies, noting that public cooperation remains critical to the success of efforts aimed at confronting criminal elements operating as bandits and armed herders.

The group reaffirmed its support for the Federal Government and the security agencies, while urging sustained collaboration and decisive action to restore peace, protect lives and property, and safeguard communities across the Middle-Belt and Nigeria at large.

A Veteran Journalist calls on NNRA to “Clean Its Act” amid promotion irregularities, absent of a governing board, and integrity concerns.


Veteran science journalist, a former NTA staff member and former spoke’s person of the NNRA Mr. Obiechina Obba has strongly urged the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) to immediately “clean up its act,” citing unfair staff promotions, the absence of a governing board, and lapses in integrity that are undermining public confidence in the agency’s ability to regulate Nigeria’s nuclear energy ambitions.

In a detailed statement, Mr. Obba criticized what he described as the unjust sidelining of senior, qualified officials in favour of juniors, describing the trend as “not proper” and contrary to civil service rules. Urging authorities to allow Barr Abdulhadi Abdullahi the affected senior staff member, said to be retiring in September, to “go happily” without further humiliation.

Reacting to the media coverage of the issues at the Public Petition Committee of the House of Representatives between Mr Abdulhadi Abdullahi and the NNRA and the video of the officer being blocked by the armed security personnel which had gone viral as unfortunate situation. He argued that such decisions undermine morale and fairness in the civil service.

“Civil service should be a truthful decision. If the civil service rules are against the senior officer, so be it. But if you take him and place him under a junior, it’s not proper. How is it acceptable?” He argued ?

Mr Obba linked these internal issues to broader concerns about the NNRA’s credibility, especially as Nigeria pursues nuclear power generation through the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC), which the NNRA is responsible for licensing and regulating.

According to Mr Obba “There’s no board in NNRA. Even when I was sacked, there was no board. So no board to handle it. How can a government agency not have a governing board? These are things that the board can handle and these are things to be resolved quietly.”

He emphasised the critical need for the highest standards of conduct and integrity within the nuclear regulator, warning of the sector’s enormous stakes.

“You know what a nuclear regulator is? They will regulate the use of nuclear energy. Give the highest level of conduct. Nuclear energy can wipe out Nigeria. Yes! We need a high level of integrity.”

Mr. Obba furthrer linked the internal issues to broader erosion of public trust, stressing that transparency is essential for Nigerians to accept nuclear power generation.

“We don’t have confidence in NNRA. People don’t have confidence that the NNRA are regulating nuclear safety. Highest level of transparency is important. People should believe that NNRA is capable to ensure Nigeria have nuclear power plants to generate electricity.”

Mr Obba drew from his own experiences, including a court matter involving his NTA service where he said the station was not properly heard as a party, underscoring the importance of fair hearing. Mr. Obinna clarified that he seeks no new earnings but only deferred entitlements such as arrears, wardrobe allowance, and leave earned during his active years, insisting there should be no conflict of interest with his regulatory role.
As a respected science journalist known for international coverage and whom is still called upon for expert opinion and analysis, Mr. Obba made referenced to Nigeria’s satellite achievements, noting Africa’s growing number of satellites (over 70) but there is absence of indigenous launch capability, to illustrate his commitment to national service in technical fields.

He maintained that addressing these issues is “not too late” and would strengthen the NNRA as it oversees the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC) in the nation’s pursuit of nuclear-generated electricity.
A retired Director of the NNRA who left long ago and spoke with the corespondent on condition not be named said Mr Abdullahi was long overdue for promotion and was unfairly treated by the NNRA . He called on government to leave up to its responsibilities and provide the necessary oversight of the Agency Another Deputy Director who also retired from the NNRA reiterated the fact it is the DG who ensures who becomes Director and who is not. According to the retired Deputy Director who also spoke on condition not be named said the DG has been operating as he likes since he assumed leadership in the NNRA . He stated that the problems between Mr Abdullahi and the DG is personal hence the protracted promotion crisis of Mr Abdullahi.
A petition to the Head of Civil Service of the Federation seen by this corespondent dated 12th December 2022 signed by Mr Abdullahi and 3 others who were denied participation during promotion exercise by the NNRA and copied to all Ministers who are statutory Board members including the Secretary to government of the Federation and the Chief of Staff to Mr President appears to confirmed that NNRA has been operating and sidelining its Governing Board. Further evidence that NNRA is operating without a Board is a response to an appeal written by the NNRA via internal memo dated 11th January 2021 to Mr Abdullahi and 3 others Deputy Directors who were denied participation in promotion examination to the post of Directors states that only “the Senior Staff Management Committee (SSMC) not the Board has power to take further decisions on the matter” signed by Mr Mathias M Vyanku MCIA for the Director General. A further proof to show that the establishment Committee of the NNRA Board was not involved in promotion examination at the Director-cadre

Other stakeholders argued that the NNRA has not yet issued a categorical response to the concerns generated by the out cry of Mr Abdullahi’s crisis. Many observers say restoring internal fairness, board functionality, and transparency will be crucial for building the public confidence needed to advance Nigeria’s nuclear energy programme safely and credibly.

Stakeholders opine that government silence and inability to sanction officials who refuses to carry lawful directives or implement circulars are to be blamed for crisis going on the NNRA. Pundit wondered why an important Agency of National and International importance was left to itself without the required statutory supervision of its Governing Board leaving the NNRA management to deal with senior staff issues the way they like.
An acknowledged copy of a letter titled “An appeal for intervention On Report on the Committee on the Regularization of Appointment and Staff Audit of Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority 2020 and Promotion Stagnation “ dated the 25th August 2025 addressed to the Chief of Staff to Mr President like other previous appeals on the persistent refusal by the NNRA Management to promote Mr Abdullahii is yet to be addressed by the Federal Government. There is yet another acknowledged copy of serious and detailed number of Corruptions and misconduct written by Mr Abdullahi and addressed to the Chief of Staff to Mr President dated April 2026 (seen by this reporter) which provided details of several allegations bothering on corruption and misconduct by the DG NNRA.to which the public awaits the response from the Government.

Hon. Barr. Aida Nath Ogwuche, the People's Democratic Party (PDP) Candidate for Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency in the forthcoming 2027 general elections, has strongly condemned the reported arbitrary arrest and prolonged detention of innocent Idoma youths and traditional leaders by security agencies in Benue State, describing the development as disturbing, unlawful, and inconsistent with the principles of justice and due process.

Hon. Ogwuche began by expressing her heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Ador, Chairman of the Benue chapter of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), whose tragic killing has heightened tensions in parts of the state.

"The death of the Benue MACBAN Chairman is a painful tragedy that deserves the strongest condemnation. I extend my deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones during this difficult time. I pray that God grants them the strength to bear this irreparable loss and that those responsible for this heinous act are swiftly identified and brought to justice," she said.

While acknowledging the responsibility of security agencies to investigate criminal activities and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice, Hon. Ogwuche stressed that such investigations must be conducted strictly within the confines of the law and without trampling on the constitutional rights of innocent citizens.

She expressed grave concern over reports that no fewer than sixteen persons, including several teenagers and an 80-year-old man, were arrested during what has been described as random street raids in Otukpo following an incident that occurred in Ohimini Local Government Area. According to available information, security operatives reportedly searched the homes of those arrested but found nothing incriminating linking them to the crime under investigation.

Among those reportedly in detention are Sunday Oseni (21), Owoicho Ameh (18), Peter John (22), Adem James (20), Daniel Raphael (23), and Emmanuel Anebi (17), alongside several others, bringing the total number of detainees to sixteen.

Hon. Ogwuche described as particularly heartbreaking the reported detention of Mr. Ajeyibi Sylvester, an 80-year-old man who is said to be in critical health while in custody.

"No society that upholds justice and respects human dignity should subject an elderly citizen of over 80 years to prolonged detention where no court has pronounced him guilty of any offence. Such reports are deeply troubling and deserve immediate attention," she stated.

She also lamented reports that some of the detained youths are candidates currently participating in the ongoing National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations but have already missed several examination papers because of their continued detention.

"If these reports are accurate, then the damage extends far beyond their loss of liberty. Their education, aspirations and future are being unfairly jeopardized. Innocent young people should not be made to pay such a heavy price for offences they have not been proven to have committed," she added.

Hon. Ogwuche further expressed concern over reports that some traditional rulers invited to the Benue State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Makurdi were subsequently detained for over twelve days without being formally charged before any court.

She emphasized that justice must never be sacrificed on the altar of intimidation or collective punishment, insisting that every Nigerian is entitled to the presumption of innocence and the protection of the law.

As part of efforts to ensure justice is served, Hon. Ogwuche disclosed that she has mandated Barr. Idoko Dino Godwin, who has been on ground in Makurdi, to take every lawful step necessary to secure justice for those unlawfully detained.

"I will continue to stand with every innocent citizen whose rights have been violated. I remain committed to ensuring that justice is done and that every innocent person in detention regains their freedom and is reunited with their families," she affirmed.

She therefore called on the Benue State Government, the Commissioner of Police, and all relevant security authorities to urgently review the circumstances surrounding the arrests and detention of the affected persons.

"If there is credible evidence against any suspect, such a person should immediately be arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction. Where no such evidence exists, the detainees should be released without further delay. The rule of law must prevail, and arbitrary detention has no place in a democratic society."

Hon. Ogwuche concluded by reminding all authorities that justice delayed is justice denied, urging every stakeholder to act with fairness, restraint, and unwavering respect for the Constitution in the interest of peace, justice, and public confidence in the nation's institutions.

The House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions has concluded its hearing into a petition filed against the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA), Dr. Yau Usman Idris, with the Committee Chairman, Hon. Kwamoti Bitrus La'ori, announcing that the matter has been closed for the preparation of a final report.

The petition was filed by Abdulhadi Attah Abdullahi, a pioneer staff member of the NNRA, who alleged that he had been unjustly denied promotion to the rank of Director despite meeting all the requirements and serving as a Deputy Director for over a decade.

Speaking with journalists shortly after the committee's sitting, Abdullahi expressed confidence in the integrity of the House Committee, stating that he believes lawmakers would deliver justice based on the documentary evidence before them.

According to him, his ordeal dates back to 2021 when he first became due for promotion on merit. He alleged that despite being one of the agency's pioneer staff members and satisfying the statutory requirements, the NNRA management under the leadership of the Director-General had repeatedly refused to elevate him.

"I have been on this matter since 2021. I became due for promotion to the position of Director on merit. I am one of the pioneer staff members of the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority, but I have remained on the rank of Deputy Director for over 10 years, whereas the normal progression should have taken only about four years," he said.

Abdullahi further notes that several interventions by relevant government institutions, including the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation and the supervising ministry, failed to resolve the matter.

He stated that reports and recommendations forwarded to the NNRA management directing that his promotion be implemented were allegedly ignored.

According to the petitioner, the dispute was previously referred to the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanism of the House Committee on Public Petitions, where, he said, efforts were made to amicably resolve the matter.

He alleged that despite the committee's interventions, the Director-General declined to implement the recommendations.

One of the issues raised during the proceedings, according to Abdullahi, was the submission of his Annual Performance Evaluation Report (APER) forms.

He maintained that he duly completed the required forms and alleged that even after the committee directed the NNRA management to collect them, the agency declined to do so.

The petitioner also recounted events surrounding the NNRA's Director-level promotion examination conducted on April 16, 2026.

According to him, he reported for the exercise after receiving an invitation but alleged that the examination was delayed for several hours following his arrival.

He further claimed that the venue was subsequently moved from the Authority's ground-floor conference hall to the fourth-floor boardroom without prior notice to him.

Abdullahi alleged that while other candidates were informed of the change, he was prevented from accessing the new venue by security personnel, including armed police officers and security operatives.

"I was the only person blocked from entering the examination venue. I documented the entire incident because I knew it might later be denied," he alleged.

The petitioner further expressed concerns that the delays in processing his promotion may have been intended to prevent him from attaining the rank of Director before his retirement from service.

Despite his grievances, Abdullahi said he remains optimistic that the National Assembly would reach a fair and objective conclusion.

"I believe this committee is doing the right thing. They listen to Nigerians with genuine complaints and examine documents without bias or favoritism. I believe they will do justice," he said.

However, he expressed reservations about whether any eventual recommendations would be implemented, alleging that previous directives from oversight bodies had not been complied with.

He further claimed that he had written petitions to the Presidency and other relevant authorities over the matter but alleged that no decisive action had been taken.

At the conclusion of the hearing, In the absence of the management of NNRA, the Chairman of the House Committee on Public Petitions, Hon. La'ori, formally closed the case and announced that the committee would proceed to prepare its final report, which is expected to contain its findings and recommendations on the petition.

The committee's final report is expected to determine the next course of action regarding the dispute between Abdullahi and the NNRA.

The Africa Polling Institute (API) has unveiled its 2026 Nigeria Social Cohesion Survey, revealing a modest improvement in the country's social cohesion index while highlighting persistent public distrust in government institutions.

The report, presented during the National Social Cohesion Dialogue 2026 held in Abuja on Thursday, measured Nigeria's Social Cohesion Index (NSCI) at 48.8 percent, representing a two-percentage-point increase from the previous survey and the highest score recorded since the study began. However, the figure remains below the 50 percent benchmark considered the threshold for a socially cohesive society.

Speaking at the unveiling, API Executive Director, Professor Bell Ihua, said the findings demonstrate that despite Nigeria's economic and social challenges, citizens continue to show resilience and a willingness to coexist across ethnic, religious and regional divides.

One of the major highlights of the report is that, for the first time since the survey commenced, a majority of respondents identified themselves primarily as Nigerians rather than by ethnic, religious or regional identities. API described this as a significant milestone in Nigeria's nation-building journey and evidence of a growing sense of shared national identity.

The survey, conducted between January and February 2025 with support from the Ford Foundation, interviewed 5,315 Nigerians aged 15 years and above through face-to-face household visits across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Respondents were interviewed in English, Pidgin, Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba using a stratified random sampling method.

Trust Deficit Persists
Despite the improved cohesion index, the survey found that confidence in government institutions remains low.

According to the report, 72 percent of Nigerians expressed little or no trust in the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, while 77 percent said they had little or no confidence in the National Assembly. The judiciary also recorded low trust levels, with 73 percent of respondents expressing little or no confidence in the institution.

Conversely, religious and traditional leaders remained the country's most trusted institutions. The survey found that 51 percent of respondents expressed significant trust in religious leaders, while 45 percent trusted traditional rulers.

The National Assembly emerged as the least trusted public institution in the survey, replacing the Nigeria Police Force, which previously occupied that position.

Nigerians Show Strong Patriotism
The report also paints a positive picture of Nigerians' willingness to contribute to national unity.

About 71 percent of respondents said they were willing to make personal sacrifices for the collective good of the country, while 77 percent expressed readiness to work with people from different ethnic backgrounds to strengthen national unity.

Similarly, 73 percent indicated their willingness to participate actively in the political process to improve governance, while 89 percent supported inter-ethnic marriages. Support for inter-faith marriages stood at 62 percent.

Divisions Still Deep

Although signs of national unity are emerging, the survey found that perceptions of division remain widespread.

Nearly half of respondents (48 percent) believe Nigeria is more divided today than it was four years ago, an increase from 31 percent recorded in the previous survey. However, 20 percent believe the country has become more united during the same period.

Political party affiliation was identified as the leading cause of societal division, with 56 percent of respondents citing it as the primary source of conflict, followed by ethnicity (46 percent) and religion (44 percent).

Growing Support for Gender Inclusion
The survey equally revealed increasing public support for women's participation in leadership and equal opportunities.

About 69 percent of Nigerians agreed that women should be allowed to lead in politics and corporate organisations, while 84 percent supported equal access to education for boys and girls.

Furthermore, 62 percent supported equal inheritance rights for women, and 66 percent agreed that women who marry outside their states of origin should be entitled to benefits in both their home states and their husbands' states.

On elective offices, 60 percent of respondents said they would vote for a woman as President of Nigeria, while 66 percent would support a female governor and 73 percent would vote for a woman seeking election as a local government chairperson.

Mixed Feelings About Nigeria's Future
The survey showed that 45 percent of Nigerians are dissatisfied with their current quality of life, compared to 41 percentwho expressed satisfaction.

More than half of respondents (55 percent) said they would relocate abroad with their families if given the opportunity, although 28 percent indicated they would prefer to remain in Nigeria.

Despite these concerns, optimism about the country's future appears to be growing, with 61 percent expressing confidence that Nigeria's future will be better than its present circumstances.

API Recommends National Social Cohesion Commission
Based on the findings, the Africa Polling Institute called for the establishment of a National Social Cohesion Commission, similar to Kenya's National Cohesion and Integration Commission, to promote inclusive governance, strengthen national identity, improve trust in public institutions and foster peaceful coexistence.

Alternatively, the institute proposed the creation of Social Cohesion Desks across all Ministries, Departments and Agencies to ensure that public policies and development programmes are inclusive and socially responsive.

API stressed that the growing sense of Nigerian identity presents an opportunity for government to deepen national integration through reforms that promote equity, justice and citizen participation.

Religious and Traditional Leaders Call for Unity
The report was unveiled during the National Social Cohesion Dialogue 2026, which brought together religious leaders, traditional rulers, policymakers and civil society stakeholders to discuss pathways toward a more united Nigeria.

Delivering the keynote address on behalf of the Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, Rev. Dr. Fr. Emmanuel Unamba urged Nigerians to embrace love, compassion and collective responsibility as the foundation for national development. He warned against growing individualism, noting that sustainable progress requires citizens to place the common good above personal interests.

Acclaimed spoken-word artist Dike Chukwumerije also delivered a stirring performance, reflecting on Nigeria's enduring divisions and urging citizens to shape the country's future through dialogue and a shared commitment to unity.

During the panel session, Archbishop Dr. Emmah Isong likened religion to a knife, explaining that while the same tool can be used by a surgeon to save lives, it can also be misused by a criminal to inflict harm. He argued that religion itself is not the problem but how individuals choose to use it, adding that personal responsibility remains essential for building a better society.

Peace advocate Imam Dr. Muhammad Nurayn Ashafa highlighted Kaduna State's culture of forgiveness despite years of violent conflict, describing reconciliation as an indispensable ingredient for lasting peace.

Traditional ruler Eze Felix E. Otuwarikpo Upata III expressed concern that political leaders increasingly sideline traditional institutions in governance, arguing that such practices weaken grassroots leadership and community cohesion.

Also speaking, Rev. Dr. James recounted his remarkable journey from violent conflict to reconciliation with Imam Ashafa. He revealed that both men had once viewed each other as enemies before discovering they had been manipulated by divisive narratives. Reflecting on the loss of lives and his own hand during the conflict, he described their eventual reconciliation as proof that dialogue, forgiveness and mutual understanding remain powerful tools for healing divided communities.

He called on religious and traditional leaders across Nigeria to reject narratives that promote hatred and instead champion peace, reconciliation and national unity.

The Africa Polling Institute (API) has urged journalists to play a leading role in promoting social cohesion through responsible reporting, saying the media remains critical to shaping public narratives capable of strengthening national unity, trust and peaceful coexistence.

The call was made during a two-day workshop for policy executives and media practitioners in Abuja with the theme, "Equipping Media Practitioners as Champions of Social Cohesion Towards the Promotion of Responsible Journalism."


The programme, supported by the Ford Foundation, trained participants on social cohesion reporting, data-driven journalism and responsible media storytelling using findings from the Nigeria Social Cohesion Survey (NSCS).

Speaking at the workshop, Executive Director of the Africa Polling Institute, Prof. Bell Ihua, described social cohesion as the willingness of citizens to cooperate for their collective survival and prosperity.

"The concept of social cohesion presupposes that citizens of a country agree that they are going to work together, they are going to cooperate to survive and to prosper. So there are two major components. The one is the survival component. The second is the prosperity component. And for that survival and prosperity to happen, certain things have to be met. One is a uniform national identity," he said.

According to him, social cohesion also depends on trust in government and public institutions, social justice and active civic participation.

He said, "Who talks about a shared vision, developmental goals and all of that. The second is trust. Trust towards the government, trust towards government institutions, and trust towards other institutions of the country. So we're talking about institutions such as the religious leaders, traditional leaders, the police, the army, both public sector and civil society.

"Then we'll talk about social justice. How can we ensure that public goods goes to every citizen in spite of religion, in spite of ethnicity, in spite of regionalism, in spite of where they come from? How can we ensure that every citizen has access to the benefits of government? Then we'll talk about civic participation. How can we ensure that every citizen goes out there to participate in their civic duties?

"You know, explain to me how we have 90 million plus registered voters, but on election day, you have only 20 plus million coming out to vote. It speaks a lot about the state of social cohesion in the country. And that's why we talking about promoting social cohesion, where we can promote unity, can promote peaceful coexistence."

He argued that many of Nigeria's challenges stem from weak social cohesion.

"You talk about the insecurity. Why will a fellow citizen kidnap another fellow citizen and take them to the forest and torture them? It tells you if the right investments that ought to have been made in those citizens was made 20 years ago, they probably wouldn't be doing what they are doing.

"You see citizens, see someone commit a crime, they begin to say, 'bring tyre, let's lynch.' It's a symptom of weak social cohesion.

Why will citizens not trust the judicial system or not trust the institutions of the state? These are all symptoms of weak social cohesion."

Ihua called on governments at all levels to formulate policies that foster unity and inclusion.

"We are saying in essence that for the country to be more socially cohesive, government needs to begin to introduce public policies that help build unity, that help build peaceful coexistence, that helps build love, inclusion. A situation where a certain part of the country are agitating for suppressionist or secession and all of that. These are all symptoms of weak social cohesion."

He said the institute had consistently generated nationwide data on social cohesion since 2019 and would unveil the latest edition of the Nigeria Social Cohesion Survey on June 25, 2026.

"As academics, as researchers, we played our part. Our part is going to provide the data. We've been doing this since 2019. This is our fifth edition. We've been running this nationwide. We visit every state, we visit every senatorial district to gather this data.

"The question therefore is, who are the burden bearers? We consider media practitioners, journalists, pressmen and women, the burden bearers, because they are the ones that shape the narratives."

He added that trend analysis from successive surveys would reveal whether policy recommendations were being implemented and whether public perceptions of national unity were improving.
Ihua also identified widening inequality as a major obstacle to social cohesion.

"Part of the challenges of cohesion is that we have in Nigeria, the gap between the haves and the have nots is widening by the day. And social cohesion is what will help to bridge that gap."

He said API had also trained policy planners and implementers to design evidence-based and socially inclusive public policies capable of delivering tangible benefits to ordinary Nigerians.

"At the moment, we have a situation where our social safety nets are weak. A lot more needs to happen. People in the grassroots need help. Many times government at the federal level provide those helps, but does it get to the grassroots? These are two different things."

Also speaking, social policy professional, Dr. Olusoji Adeniyi, urged journalists to avoid stereotypes and ethnic profiling in their reports, saying such practices undermine national unity.

"Three or four days that we've been discussing the issue of social cohesion and the role of the burden bearers, journalists and the media in particular, it occurred to all of us, including the trainers, that we have a whole lot of work to do in order to educate our constituents."

He said the training exposed participants to better ways of framing stories.

"We were taught how to change the narratives and adjust some of the things that we thought we were doing well to do them even better. We need to avoid stereotypes as much as possible."

Adeniyi cautioned against assigning criminal activities to particular ethnic groups.

"We need to avoid situations where we assume that certain groups of people are responsible for certain ills in the society.

"We have situations where we'll talk about Fulani herdsmen. We will talk easily about people who are called the unknown gunmen. We have created all kinds of titles and labels, which is sometimes unverified."

He stressed that "criminals are criminals. We should criminalize the act, but humanize the process and ensure that we look at our stories from the human angle and make very clear objectives for our stations and for our programmes that focus on the unity of the nation."

In his remarks, seasoned development expert, Odoh Diego Okenyodo, called for improved welfare for journalists, saying financial security would enable them to produce more patriotic and socially responsible reports

"The real corollary of this teaching is that we must take care of the welfare of journalists. It is not just training them, but there are human beings that are incurring costs, transportation, school fees for children, accommodation, and they are 24 hours a day seven days a week on call."

He argued that better remuneration and insurance would reduce journalists' vulnerability to financial inducements.

"If journalists are properly taken care of then they can write the socially cohesive stories, more patriotic stories without being afraid of their livelihoods."

Okenyodo also encouraged journalists to diversify their professional skills beyond news reporting.

"As a journalist, you first have to think of yourself as not only information provider. I should get people to understand that information and then take action."

He said journalists could build sustainable careers by offering communication-related services such as policy analysis, development reporting, documentary production, newsletters and strategic communication.

"I always encourage journalists, don't resign the jobs you are in. The jobs are going to be your advertisement medium. Because people see you in the news, people see your name in the by-line, they know about you. So when you come and provide other services, you are most likely going to get accepted to do it. And you can charge with premium for that."

The Concerned Christian Youth Forum (CCYF) has strongly refuted reports linking a recent aircraft incident in Asaba/Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State, to Dunamis International Gospel Centre, describing the publication as false, baseless, and malicious.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the group reacted to a report published by The Cable News and subsequently circulated by several online platforms, including Instablog, under the headline: "Exclusive: Aircraft in Asaba Incident Linked to Dunamis Church as FG Arrests Overaged Pilot."

According to the CCYF, an independent review and inquiry into the matter revealed that Dunamis International Gospel Centre does not own any private jet or aircraft, contrary to claims contained in the publication.

"The allegation that the aircraft involved in the Asaba/Ogwashi-Uku incident belongs to Dunamis Church is entirely false and misleading," the statement said. "The church has consistently maintained that it does not own a private aircraft, despite having the capacity to acquire one if the need arises for its evangelical activities."

The forum further accused the publishers of spreading misinformation capable of misleading members of the public and damaging the reputation of the church and its leadership.

CCYF noted that the dissemination of false information could attract legal consequences under Nigerian law. The group cited provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015, particularly Section 24, which criminalizes the intentional publication and circulation of false information capable of causing public anxiety, injury, hatred, intimidation, or reputational damage.

The statement also referenced Section 59 of the Criminal Code Act, which criminalizes the publication of false reports likely to cause fear, alarm, or public disturbance, as well as provisions relating to defamation under Sections 373 to 375 of the Criminal Code.

The forum urged journalists, bloggers, and media organizations to verify sensitive information through official channels before publication, emphasizing the need for responsible journalism and adherence to professional ethics.

"This disclaimer serves as a formal notice to the public to disregard the publication and its contents. We encourage all media practitioners and content creators to verify information from credible and official sources before dissemination," the statement added.

CCYF further stated that those responsible for publishing and circulating the alleged false report may be held accountable through appropriate legal channels should it be established that the information was knowingly fabricated or maliciously disseminated.

The group advised members of the public seeking clarification on the matter to rely on official communication channels of Dunamis International Gospel Centre for accurate information.

The Middle-Belt Youth Congress has expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation in the Middle-Belt region following the killing of Chief Godwin Vonga, the traditional ruler of Timshat in Plateau State, and the recent attacks in Ankpali Community, Benue State.

In a statement issued by its President, Obande Gideon O., the group condoled with the governments and people of Benue and Plateau states over the tragic incidents, describing the murder of a traditional ruler as a dangerous development capable of further destabilizing the region.

The Forum noted that the killing of Chief Vonga amid rising insecurity in the Middle-Belt represents a disturbing escalation of violence and poses a significant threat to peace and stability.

According to the group, the continued attacks on residents of Ankpali Community have raised serious concerns about the motives of the perpetrators, whom it described as armed herders unwilling to embrace peaceful coexistence.

"The sustained killings in the Middle-Belt continue to raise questions about the intentions behind these attacks. The murder of a traditional ruler adds a dangerous dimension to the security challenges facing our region," the statement said.

While acknowledging the efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in addressing insecurity across the country, the group maintained that the Middle-Belt remains under severe threat and requires more decisive action.

"The Middle-Belt is bleeding profusely, and all stakeholders must unite to bring these senseless killings to an end," the group stated.

The Congress further lamented the economic impact of the persistent violence, noting that agriculture—the primary economic driver of the region—has suffered significantly due to repeated attacks on farming communities.

It warned that the continuous killings and displacement of residents risk undermining livelihoods and food production, while creating widespread hardship across affected communities.

Calling for greater unity among the people of the region, the president of the forum, Comrade Obande urged sons and daughters of the Middle-Belt to rise in defense of their communities and work collectively toward finding lasting solutions to the insecurity crisis.

The group stressed that silence or indifference in the face of ongoing violence could be interpreted as tacit acceptance of the situation.

It also advocated for an urgent stakeholders' meeting involving traditional rulers, community leaders, government officials, security agencies, youth groups, and other relevant actors to develop practical measures aimed at restoring peace and security.

"The need for a critical stakeholders' meeting in the Middle-Belt has become imperative. Enough is enough. We must come together to chart a path toward ending these sustained attacks on our people," the statement added.

The group disclosed plans to engage key stakeholders across various sectors in pursuit of what it described as a comprehensive and lasting solution to the region's security challenges.

The group also commended the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd.), and other security chiefs for their commitment to combating insecurity, while emphasizing that security remains a collective responsibility.

The statement concluded with prayers for the repose of the souls of Chief Godwin Vonga and all those who lost their lives in the recent attacks.

"May the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace," the statement said.

The Middle-Belt Youth Congress (MYC) has applauded the appointment of Prof. Segun Aina as the new Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, describing the development as a positive step toward youth inclusion in leadership and public service.

In a statement signed by its President, Obande Gideon Obande, the group congratulated Prof. Aina on his appointment, noting that his emergence reflects growing confidence in younger professionals to take on strategic national responsibilities.

According to the group, the appointment of the 40-year-old professor underscores the increasing recognition of competent young Nigerians in leadership roles. MYC further stated that the decision, alongside the appointment of other young professionals into key public offices, demonstrates a commitment to encouraging generational inclusion in governance and administration.

The organization urged the newly appointed JAMB Registrar to justify the confidence reposed in him by delivering beyond expectations and sustaining reforms within the examination body.

The youth body also commended the outgoing JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, for what it described as his impactful leadership and transformational reforms during his tenure.

According to MYC, JAMB witnessed significant improvements under Oloyede’s administration, particularly in the conduct, administration, and credibility of examinations, which have strengthened public trust in the institution.

Former Benue State Commissioner for Finance, Dr. David Olofu, has emerged as the African Democratic Congress senatorial flagbearer for Benue South Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Dr. Olofu emerged as the consensus candidate of the party following primaries conducted across the nine local government areas of the district. His candidature was formally affirmed in Otukpo on Sunday.

Declaring the result, the ADC Returning Officer, Barr. Ogah Ekwu, said Dr. Olofu satisfied all constitutional requirements of the party and was unanimously endorsed across the zone.

“Dr. Olofu, having met all the requirements of the constitution of the party, is hereby returned as the sole candidate and duly elected ADC senatorial candidate for Benue South,” Ekwu stated.

In his acceptance remarks, Dr. Olofu described his emergence as a collective victory for the people of Benue South. He pledged to run an inclusive leadership that accommodates every interest and stakeholder in the district.

He stated that representation for the zone “shall no longer be a one-man show,” and announced plans to establish a “Benue South People’s Assembly” and a “Benue South People’s Council” to deepen consultation, unity, and collective decision-making.

The former commissioner said the protection of lives and communities would be his top priority if elected, noting that insecurity had continued to cripple the agricultural strength and economic potential of the district.

“As outlined in my blueprint, my first charge shall be the protection of our people. This will begin with restoring security to our communities and unlocking the full potential of our agricultural economy,” he said.

He assured party faithful that no bloc would be sidelined and stressed that unity, inclusion, and purposeful representation would define his senatorial ambition.

The David Olofu Campaign Council strongly condemns the alleged forceful snatching and diversion of electoral materials intended for the African Democratic Congress primaries in Apa/Agatu Federal Constituency.

According to reports received by the Campaign Council, armed individuals and thugs intercepted the vehicle conveying the party’s electoral materials and the Apa Local Government ADC Chairman, Hon. Sharon Adokpe.

According to a statement issued by Dr Friday Adakole Elijah, Secretary, David Olofu Campaign Council noted that the Chairman was pushed out of the moving vehicle, while the perpetrators fled with the materials to unknown destination.

The Campaign Council states unequivocally that no primary election took place in Apa/Agatu Federal Constituency under these circumstances.

Consequently, we call on the State and National leadership of the African Democratic Congress to reject any result purportedly arising from the disrupted process.

We further urge the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies to immediately investigate the incident, apprehend all individuals involved, and prevent the circulation or validation of any fraudulent result from the purported exercise.

The Campaign Council also demands the disqualification of any beneficiary of the said process and insists that all perpetrators be prosecuted to the full extent of the law to safeguard the integrity of the party’s internal democratic process.

Nigerian music sensation and gospel singer, Salau Aliu Olayiwola, popularly known as Testimony Jaga, tackles former Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, over his recent remarks on the concept of prosperity gospel.

Osinbajo had recently sparked debate after criticising what he described as the prosperity gospel, prompting mixed reactions within religious and public circles.

Jaga, reacting in a video circulating online, argued that the notion of “prosperity gospel” is misleading, insisting that there is only one gospel, the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

“I saw a video where you were condemning the prosperity gospel. With due respect, there is no such thing as a prosperity gospel. There is only one gospel, the Gospel of Jesus Christ,” he said.

The singer also challenged Osinbajo’s moral authority to criticise the Church, questioning his record while serving in government.

“If anyone wants to correct the body of Christ, it should not be someone like you. Show Nigerians what you did while you were vice president," he stated.

“Do you understand what poverty does to people? As a politician, what have you done to address it?” he asked.

“The gospel is good news. If people are struggling, they should hear a message of upliftment, not condemnation,” he said.

The gospel artiste also questioned Osinbajo’s influence as a pastor during his time in office, urging him to demonstrate tangible impact both in governance and ministry.

“Show us the people whose lives you transformed. Show evidence of support for the poor or meaningful development, even in your own community,” he added.

While acknowledging the existence of abuse within religious circles, Jaga stressed that such excesses should not undermine the broader message of the Christian faith.

“There are fake pastors, yes, but the gospel itself remains a message of hope and transformation,” he noted.

“If you truly believe in what you are saying, then lead by example. Give back, support the poor, and demonstrate the values you preach,” Jaga said.

The De Norsemen Kclub International (DNKI) has called on the Federal Government to take urgent and decisive steps to address Nigeria’s worsening security, political, and economic challenges, expressing deep concern over recent developments across the country.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the organization condemned the recent wave of violent killings in Jos, Plateau State, describing the incidents as “callous, senseless, and avoidable.” DNKI said the attacks, which claimed the lives of innocent citizens, represent a grave failure of the nation’s security system and a threat to national unity.

The group extended its condolences to the families of the victims and expressed solidarity with the people of Plateau State in their time of grief.

While acknowledging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s visit to Jos to commiserate with affected communities, DNKI stressed that such gestures, though important, must be backed by concrete and sustained action.

“The time has come for decisive, strategic, and sustained measures to end the cycle of violence,” the statement read.

DNKI urged the Federal Government to ensure that those responsible for the killings are swiftly identified and brought to justice. It also called for a comprehensive review and overhaul of Nigeria’s security architecture to effectively tackle the persistent insecurity across the country.

The organization further raised concerns over the high cost of political participation, particularly the exorbitant fees for nomination forms charged by major political parties. According to DNKI, these costs, along with stringent candidacy requirements, have made it increasingly difficult for ordinary Nigerians to participate in the democratic process.

“Democracy must not be reduced to an exclusive preserve of the wealthy. It should remain an inclusive platform driven by merit, vision, and a genuine desire to serve,” the statement noted, calling for urgent electoral reforms to promote affordability, transparency, and fairness.

On the economic front, DNKI decried the continued inefficiencies in Nigeria’s power sector, noting that unreliable electricity supply is crippling small and medium-scale enterprises and worsening unemployment and poverty levels.

The group observed that many businesses are forced to rely on expensive alternative power sources, leading to higher production costs and increased prices of goods and services.

It also highlighted the impact of the energy crisis on the healthcare sector, where hospitals and medical facilities face rising operational costs due to dependence on generators, thereby pushing quality healthcare beyond the reach of many Nigerians.

DNKI called on relevant authorities to prioritize reforms in the power sector, including improving generation capacity, ensuring efficient distribution, and adopting sustainable energy solutions to support economic growth.

Reaffirming its commitment to national unity and progress, the organization urged leaders at all levels of government to move beyond rhetoric and implement people-oriented policies that will restore public confidence and secure Nigeria’s future.

The leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Benue State last Thursday (2nd April, 2026) fiercely decried the decision by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to derecognise the leadership of the party by Senator David Mark executive.

They depicted INEC as a partial umpire working with the ruling party to entrench a one party system in the country stressing that they would do everything possible within the ambit of the law to resist what they described as INEC'S mischief and continue with their planned convention undeterred.


Former Speaker Pro-temporal of the House of Representatives, Terngu Tsegba who said that INEC was working in tandem with the government of the day to kill opposition in the country said no amount of shenanigans orchestrated by the electoral body and the ruling government would deter the African Democratic Congress from appearing on the balot in 2027.

He revealed that the action by the Independent National Electoral Commission stemmed from fear as a result of growing population of the ADC in the country stressing that the party in the last few days continue to leap in its membership coast asserting that the surge reflects growing public anger against the APC government in Nigeria.

He alleged that fear of electoral defeat pushed those in power to influence INEC’s action, insisting party leaders were already taking steps to reverse what he described as a midnight decision.

The wife of the National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, Chief (Mrs) Helen Onma Mark charged the members of the party not to be despaired by the ignoble action of INEC saying that the plan was being resisted by the National leadership of the party.

"Their evil plan will not stand. Our National Chairman and other prominent leaders of our party are already taking action in Abuja and that is why our National Chairman is not here with us at the moment. Don't be disturbed by what is happening as it will not stand", she said.

Two governorship aspirants, Dr Peter Adejo and Joseph Waya who also condemned the action of INEC in strong terms told the mammoth crowd that the conspiratorial action by the INEC and the ruling All Progressives Congress was a sign that defeat is already steering them in the face.

House of Representatives hopefuls Solomon Eigege, Akpoda, Innocent Omudu, Adoyi Ojogbane and others said that the attempt by the electoral body would not deter them from continuing with their mobilisation ahead of the 2027 election assuring that they would work assiduously towards defeating present government.

On his part, Sir John Ngbede urged members not to lose steam, charging them to return to their local governments and intensify grassroots mobilisation ahead of imminent party congresses.

Former member of the House of Representatives representing Oju/Obi Federal Constituency, Samson Okwu echoed the same sentiment, calling the development an “April Fool,” and insisted that despite APC’s control of many states, the ruling party remains jittery over ADC’s rising profile.

David Olofu, a formidable Senatorial hopeful in firm tones, warned against any attempt to derail democracy, stressing that Nigerians would not be dragged back to what he metaphorically described as “the days of five leprous hands.”
