The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has frowned at the discordant tunes emanating from South East leaders over the choice of Peter Obi as running mate to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

The Association, in a statement issued by its President, Comrade Obande Gideon Obande, said it expected a mature approach to handling the issue, rather than the resort to heating up the polity recalling that it was similar disunity that led the geopolitical zone to produce five senate presidents within an eight year period.

While attesting to the unimpeachable character of Peter Obi, as reflected in his eight year stewardship of Anambra State, the Students' Body called on the leadership of the party to see to an amicable resolution of the issue at stake.

NANS mourns Deceased UniBen Student, Pledges to Assess Health Facilities on Campuses

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has described the death of Mr. Austin Okafor, a 300Level student of the University of Benin, as a huge loss to the Association.

The association, in a press release by its National President, Comrade Obande Gideon Obande, describes the death of Mr Okafor as both painful and shameful, being a consequence of the neglect of the health sector.

While commiserating with the family of the deceased, the Association pledged to embark on a fact-finding mission to unravel the remote cause of his death and prevent future occurrence.

"We sympathise with the entire student community and the management of UniBen and by this constitute a committee that will tour all health facilities on our campuses and report to the National secretariat on the steps to be taken to ensure that ugly events as this is prevented from my reoccurring," the statement reads.

Nairaland / General / NANS Task FG To Release Withheld Benue Fund And Other Affected States by PeterOnu(m): 5:57pm On Oct 08, 2018
The president of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Obande Gideon Obande has task the Federal Government to immediately release the Paris fund meant for Benue State Government and other affected States, Comrade Obande condemned FG for withholding the Paris fund earlier released to the State government, Comrade Obande noted that the fund is a refund meant to get to all the states believing that it will go a long way in alleviating the economic pressure on the masses.

He asserted that the seizure of the Paris fund meant for Benue state and few other states have rather increased the burden on the state and painted the Federal government in the light of displaying preference for the welfare of some citizens over others.

In the light of equity and fairness, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), demands that the Federal Government releases the withheld funds of Benue and other states to lighten the burden on the workers, pensioners and students within the affected states as this delay is amounting to the breach of the right of citizens on the affected States and a deviation from the true tenets of democracy.

We believe that the welfare of citizens surpasses any form of interest and rather than withhold the portion meant for the affected states, a committee be set up by the presidency to rather monitor and report on the usage of the Paris fund across the 36 States.

In the discharge of our duties, we must be guided by the constitution to ensure that we do not undermine other institutions of democracy as this will destroy our nascent democracy.

Nigerian students wish to sue for equity and demand that all affected states are given their own trench within the next 10 working days or face mass action from Nigerian Students.

Politics / Civil Society Group Kicks Against High Cost Of Nomination Form by PeterOnu(m): 4:39pm On Sep 03, 2018
The Coalition of Civil Society Organizations for sustainable democracy in Nigeria has called on the leadership of all political parties in Nigeria to review downward the cost of nomination form for aspirants.

In its press conference held on September 3rd, 2018 at Agura Hotel, Abuja, the coalition noted that "recent events leading to the 2019 general elections have being characterized with dismay, especially the exorbitant cost of nomination forms across political parties. The worst of it is that of the APC which (sic) proposed cost of nomination form conflicts its ideological posture of the change mantra".

The body also took a swipe at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for failing "in its responsibility of regulating political parties", noting that INEC is supposed to set a limit for the cost of Political Parties nomination forms just as it limits the cost of electioneering expenditure.

According to the Body, the APC should reduce the cost of its existing nomination cost of State Assembly from N550,000 , RepsN2,200,000, Senate N3,300,000, Governorship N5,500,000 and Presidential N27,700,000 to accommodate Nigerians who have not stolen public funds to participate in the primaries.

"If the APC must lead the campaign to save Nigeria Democracy, it must lead by example in allowing direct primaries at all level thereby introducing fairness to the electoral procedures in the Country," Prince Danielson Momoh, National Coordinator of the Group noted.

No cost of nomination form for those seeking to contest the office of the President of Nigeria should be above N5,000,000.00 as Nigeria is gradually returning to true democracy.

The Coalition also called on the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to review downward the cost of its nomination form especially the Presidential to enable young people participate

Investment / Senator Samuel Anyanwu's Vision For A New Imo State by PeterOnu(m): 8:14am On Aug 31, 2018
By: Kelechi Eke.

It is no longer news that Senator Samuel Anyanwu is, today, the most sought after governorship aspirant across all the political parties in Imo State, even though he is of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) brand. This position did not come out of nothing. In life, reward for hardwork is more work. Hardwork surely pays.

From a humble beginning, Samdaddy, as he is fondly called, has overcome all challenges and has emerged the highest political office holder in Imo State on the platform of the People's Democratic Party (PDP). His political profile is rising like a hurricane because of his rich democratic credentials which have made Imolites to admire him. His humility, accessibility, charming charisma and enormous goodwill have attracted the movers and shakers of Imo politics to his side. With his resilience embedded in political optimism and realism, Samdaddy is poised to smile home with victory as the next Governor of Imo State.

Today, there are ongoing discussions to present him as the governorship consensus candidate because of his personality and the sustained credible performances he has recorded for himself. He has a dogged fighting spirit that never chickens out in the face of opposition, propaganda and blackmail, which distinguishes him to merit the status of a consensus candidate. He is tested and trusted in democratic struggles and building bridges of friendship. Senator Samuel Anyanwu is indeed a quintessential democrat and a performance-oriented and consummate politician.

If Senator Samuel Anyanwu emerges the People's Democratic Paty (PDP) governorship flagbearer and the next Governor of Imo State in 2019, which are the most likely things to happen, it will provide him the opportunity to build a new Imo of his vision, as he has, before now, shown competence and capacity to deliver on any given mandate.

He was the secretary of Imo Youth Organization in 1983, a platform he used to learn the ropes as a politician. His emergence as the executive chairman of Ikeduru local government area in 2004 came to many as a surprise. This was as a result of his late declaration of interest for the executive chairmanship position when others had almost completed their consultations. But he still went ahead to beat them all, a situation that is similar to the present scenario in the guber race.

Instructively, Senator Anyanwu's administration as a local government chairman was not only impactful but was also memorable. He built a four kilometer road from Afor lolo in Inyishi to Amaimo. The import of this achievement will be better appreciated when one recalls how difficult it is for local government chairmen to construct roads in the State due to paucity of funds. He also constructed the Chairman's office, the perimeter fencing of the council secretariat, dug boreholes, trained youths in a revolutionary computer training program, amongst others.

More importantly, Sen. Samdaddy was the hero of workers in the Council which earned him "Action", a name he still bears till date as far as civil servants in Ikeduru are concerned. This name was due to the manner he handled the welfare of the workers.

In the State Assembly, Sen. Anyanwu was the chairman of Owerri Zone Caucus. He was the only member, at a time, to head two House Standing Committees of Commerce and Industry and that of Finance. Recall also, that he sponsored the customary court amendment law which was the flagship law of the sixth House of Assembly. This is among other bills and motions he sponsored and co-sponsored. His views were not only respected, he was one of the critical members of the State Assembly. The role he played alongside Prof. Fabian Osuji and Sen. Christy Anyanwu in ensuring that the main campus of Imo State University remained in Owerri still attracts encomiums to him till date.

In the Senate, Sen. Anyanwu has shone like the stars. He was among the few senators in the current Senate to head a Senate Standing Committee even as a first time opposition member. He has since gone ahead to deliver on his three key election promises of offering a strong voice, attracting projects, and women and youth empowerment. These excellent performances have also attracted awards and commendations.

It is also important to note that Sen. Samuel Anyanwu achieved all these with the limitations associated with these above positions.

Now that he has expressed his ambition to be the next governor of Imo State, he has designed clear cut strategies to transform the fortunes of the State and bring back smiles on the faces of Imolites.

As elucidated in his policy document, Sen. Anyanwu's vision for Imo State is to assuage the sufferings of Imo people through wealth creation when he is elected, generate employment and reduce poverty. He is set to introduce principles that will promote respect for rule of law, justice, fairness and integration of all stakeholders, run a government that focuses on developing the economy of the state and making it the hub of South East market by identifying and developing viable areas of comparative advantage, create an enabling environment that will attract investors and encourage private sector participation in developing the State economy and having a government that will liberate the State from the dependency on federal allocation.

His vision also includes to grow the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the State by activating robust private sector business engagement, increase earnings of the people and get them to pay taxes and duties effortlessly, engage in aggressive sectoral audit of infrastructure available and also upgrade same in order to channel the energies of the people from civil service jobs to private sector businesses, restore Local Government system and town unions, giving them every necessary support that will bring about grassroots development, make security of lives and property a top priority, guarantee a qualitative and holistic free education, with a clear path on sustainability of funding, reposition agriculture as vehicle for job creation, wealth generation and food security, guarantee the decentralization of the healthcare sector in preparation for a universal health care system, as well as embark on a comprehensive infrastructural development, while upgrading the existing ones.

The task, no doubt, is going to be daunting, but it is heartwarming to note that Sen. Samdaddy has over time built enough confidence for the citizens of the State to trust in his capacity to deliver on this vision. This vision is indeed clear and definite in the mind of Sen. Anyanwu. His antecedents can attest to this. The burden, therefore, lies on the PDP delegates to set the State on the road to recovery by ensuring that Sen. Anyanwu gets the Party's ticket. These delegates can actually immortalize their names by choosing to be pencils in the hands of God for us to have an Imo State of our shared dream.

Nairaland / General / CSTD: FG Should Allocate 3% Of Its Consolidated Fund To Improve SST -prof. Njoku by PeterOnu(m): 5:24pm On Aug 14, 2018

The Centre for Satellite Technology Development in Nigeria (CSTD) and National Space Research and Development Agency, Federal Ministry of Science and Technology held their 2018 Annual Space Conference and Exhibition on
the THEME "Revolutionizing Agriculture Through Space Science and Technological Application" on Tuesday 14th August, 2018 at Obasanjo Space Centre, Abuja.

Prof. S.O Muhammad Director General of National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) while giving his welcome address noted that Nigeria is currently experiencing an agricultural revolution as a result of the Federal Government's diversity program in which other sectors of the economy are being jumpstarted in other to insulate the country's dependence on oil. So it's safe to say CSTD is leaving up to its mandate by exploring ways in which Space technology can be used as a driving tool to improve agricultural practices and in turn better the lives of the average Nigeria.

Its significant to note that in Nigeria, sustainable farmers are using innovative techniques to produce and distribute food. Food is now being grown on rooftops, in community gardens and anywhere there is space. Agricultural innovation runs across the food spectrum from aquaponics to food hubs. These new models are changing the way food is grown and distributed and it seems the sky is the limit when it comes to project to increase locally grown, sustainably produced food.

Agricultural entrepreneurs are working towards food independence both for city dwellers and rural residents, hence the need for Revolutionizing Agriculture Through Space Science and Technology Applications should become imperative because it touches on a sector that is critical to the lives of all Nigerians regardless of tribe, religion or class.

The Keynote Speaker Prof. Placid Njoku recommended that the Federal Government of Nigeria should statutorily allocate, annually, 3% of the consolidated revenue fund of the federation to significantly upscale and sustain development of Science Space Technology (SST) in Nigeria, he further recommended that Government should expedite the development and launching of NigComSat-2 and NigComsat-3 with specific target achievement date to enhance Nigeria's communications reach and efficiency and bring enhanced impetus into the national space technology development program.
