OnuohaClever: hmmm, finally i am here.... 389 pages!!! this is the knowledge base of fish farming. Robonski, exclesior, Ttalk, abx1 and co., may the Almoghty God continue to enrich you guys greatly for unveiling the "hidden secrets of catfish business".
My journey into this business started on the 22nd April 2017 when i was lured into the fish rearing business by a supposed friend (who was only interested in selling tarpaulin pond and expensive fingerlings @N50 naira to me). I was abandoned to my faith as i never saw him again because i guess he has achieved his objective which is to defraud me instead of mentoring me.
i was at cross roads as i had no prior experience until i stumbled on this thread on "the hidden truth of catfish business" on the 25th April 2017, as a good student i took my pen and paper, studied each page on the thread. i must say that as a newbie, i am already equipped with the best practices in catfish business.
Like i said earlier i stocked 1000 fingerlings (only to discover that it wasn't up 700 fingerlings because i was short changed as a result of not counting my fishes when it was delivered to me -- lesson learnt according to the Thread: Always count your fingerlings before you stock. During the first week, my fingerlings (60 of them) where dying in the first week until i deployed deep water aerator (having read about it in this thread) in the second week. The aerator is integrated into my 2Kva inverter system in my house. Oh least i forget, i have a backyard farm in my house at Abuja measuring 125 Feet by 50 Feet full fenced with borehole to be used for fish farming. i have been getting tips on best practices on fish farming with consulting anyone for the past two months. Now let me share my experience so far with you guys;
1. Most of my fishes attained 400g in exactly two months after stocking (remember i told i did not deploy aerator in the first week) 2. I lost about 60 fingerlings in the first week before deployment of aerator but after the deployment of the aerator i have only lost 1 fish in two moths 3. i measured the weight again of my fish after Two months and 1 week, guess what? they now weigh 500g. That is additional 100g in a week 4. i change my fish pond water every 7 days thus reducing the overhead cost of changing water every 3 days ( the aerators are on 24/7 every day of the month i don't think i can go with this business without a deep water aerator technology because with dissolved oxygen, your fishes grow faster and there will be no need for medication (as i not bought a single one). I have sorted my fishes into two different ponds and i have also stcked additional 2000 hybrid fingerlings and so far only three have died as they are in their second week. i will upload pictures later I really want to appreciate you guys for putting out this info for people like us to utilize. Robonski, i also want to join AQUABREN, please endeavour to furnish with details of how to become a member on my mail workwithclever@gmail.com Almighty God will continue to bless the works of thy hand. |

Biggyblizzy: Simply get d water analysis done in any lab near not all water are suitable for hatching ,not to talk of breeding .more so d level of oxygen dissolved saturated in dah water is not suffocate datz why doz fingerlings hang tobgetvfresh oxygen so test d water. |

tundebabzy: It makes it easy for algae to bloom in your pond. Algae is not desirable because during the day they will release oxygen but at night they will compete with your fish for valuable oxygen in your pond causing your fish growth to suffer because of the reduced DO levels. |

excelsiorfarm: i would have told you clearly that juveniles is better for starter, also breeder that is sincere in the size of his/her fingerlings would still do okay. All depends on the sincerity of the breeder. No friendly breeder would sell an ijebu size to a starter even if he/she plead for it.
About treatment, the conventional story that you will hear is use formalin, permanganate, chlorine etc or blagdon anti- bacteria etc, but when i see i have not the luxury of time to seek any of the above or they aint available, i simply wash with sunlight, rinse well, very well, then clean with hypo(using a clean foam), let it dry and afterwards soak in water for some time and flush out the water to the last drop. i could do such twice i.e the flushing. I use it same or next day, depending on time i did all the above.
How many times i have/had done this? lost count, but i always recommend the common one, because i do all my things with diligence or i dont do it at all.
Regards |

Ttalk: Ma, hope you are fully back on your production, i pray it will be a success story this time around.
From my personal experience this tip can be of help to your next hatching operation
1. Acclimatize your broodstock to your water and temperature for at least 10 days before using the broodstock
2. Compare your pH meter to determine accuracy or give to experience person to calibrate for you. [Since two pH dont give exact figure]
3. Always remember that hatchery/room temperature is different from water temperature. The different can make or mar success in hatchery
4. African clarias due to our environment adaptation, takes a bit longer to fertilize and hatch. i.e @ water temperature of 26 degree, almost all the egg became ripe after eleven hour. I prefer 12 hours at 26 o c.
5. Allow water in the vat settle for at least 12hours before introduction of egg
6. Covering of vat during incubation is not necessary provided vat is in enclosed environment and you maintain constant temperature.
7. Before introduction of egg, test your water and adjust the pH and temperature to neutral 7 and 30 respectively. This operation can be repeated every six hour interval. I reset my pH every 12hours interval.
8. Clarias will hatch from pH 6 to 7.5 and temperature from 25- 32. While pH of 7 and temperature of 30 is regarded as optimum for hatching
9. Aerator enhances hatching rate it is recommended
10. Flow through water energizes the egg and enhances hatching rate.
11. Incubation and rearing of larva required similar pH and water temperature for at least the first 15days. Maintain constant flow-through
12. There is always urge to see your larva grow. Please dont overfeed them
You can get over 90% hatching rate and survival rate with these simple observation, God on our side.
To construct automatic local incubator that will guarantee over 90% hatching rate provided other factors are place, e-mail goldgate2003@yahoo.com |

ayosat: @ Talkk * you will need 2 female of 1.5 kg to 2 kg with 1 male of 2kg brood stock * 5 vats of 500 ltr can take the 25000 fries at 5000 each. With this you will be able to monitor them well * the nursery is where the challenge may be. Cos with 1000 ltr you will need to keep just 2000 fingerlings. Some keep up to 5000 fingerlings in a 1000 ltr tank. But my advice is 2000. This will make your fish grow faster healthier and stronger. For this you will need about 12 vats of 1000 ltr each. Wish you Good luck |

robonski15: Good job, I noticed two pillars on both side of the pond which is very good to avoid collapse.. make sure all the blocks are filled with concrete and well matched down. For drainage channel all pipe at the back of the pond close to the face, do aittle drainage and lookout for where the water can be channeled to.
While plastering make the pond sloppy towards the drainage for easy flow of water while flushing . |

ab1x: It is not fixed. There is no way one can determine the exact figure. Fish feed on themselves (cannibalism), mostly when they are small. A fish that die at night can sink before 8am in the morning. A lot of farms do not have time to start counting even if they do, they can't get the exact figure; that is why an additional 50 pieces or 100 pieces are put on every 1000 pieces so that it can cover for the ones that died during the rearing period. Farmers usually try to make sure mortality rate are reduced to minimal level. |

robonski15: For earthen pond: width x breath x depth /3 multiply by 2
concrete pond: width x breath x depth /3 multiply by 5
Example. 10 feet by 10 feet with a depth of 4 feet how many fish can we stock in a concrete pond 10 x 10 x 4= 400... 400/3= 133.33..... 133.33 x 5 = 666 fishes |

robonski15: Congrats to you, we go wash am oo lol. It's a good thing you followed every advice and instruction by members of this thread hence the result. Just imagine if you had stocked 10k fishes, by now you would have been driving a range rover sport . What are ur plans for the next batch?.
I feel for your friend regarding his collapsed pond, I have had my own fair share of a collapsed pond. I had about 10k fingerlings I wanted to sell, the buyer concluded he will pick them up the next day, could you believe that night the pond collapsed and even fell the fence close to it, all the fingerlings was gone. When I saw what happened I sat down on the floor ( five minute madnessss) . All my money was washed away. Anytime I remember that incidence I just laugh it off..
Pillars should be mounted at the at both side of the pond to withstand the any form of collapse. |

aquadude15: You have a good hatchery ma. Most hatchers have experienced something like this but you shouldnt let it pull u down. Fries mortality has different causes like you ph, feed, poor water mgt, stres, temperatur, etc. You may give the house some hint about your hatchery mgt from day 1 till when your hatchlings start dying so we can know were you are getting it wrong and correct you or get an experience farmer to check you farm out. More also hatchlings dont need any medication during their early stage, proper mgt matter most |

ab1x: If you have access to flow through, you can pump water on them. I will advise you to do two things: 1) Never overfeed them in the evening. Just give them little feed. They tend to be more active in the morning than in the evening. 2) Feed them before 5PM so that the feed can digest on time |

robonski15: Depends also on the feed, I don't use coppens, multi or zeigler to feed melange which is more costlier, I use either vital, top or crown feed to reduce cost drastically.. I project two make a kg. |

GOLDLOVER: hmmm.. very true. This also applies to humans and other animals. The quality of the protein is more important than the quantity. High quality protein contains all essential amino acids. Thanks for this info. |
Agriculture › Re: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by petitmonde(m): 4:57pm On Aug 28, 2017 |
robonski15: Chairman the only thing that went wrong so far is the water management, without a proper water management nothing can be achieved. 2mm is ideal for feeding fingerlings, most farmers think the higher the protein the better but the truth is catfish requires only 28% crude protein but with a balanced amino acid at the end of the day they achieve almost same result as long as you keep your water clean and you feed your fish regularly to satiation..

Agriculture › Re: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by petitmonde(m): 4:55pm On Aug 28, 2017 |
lagbaja: When I say 1kg of melange, I do not mean a single table size catfish. When buyers buy, they buy per kg ( 3 or 4 fishes makes a kg of melange) so it makes business sense to estimate cost per kg of melange instead of unit cost of melange. It is erroneous to estimate a unit cost of melange as you did because no 2 persons sell melange at same average size. |
