You are very correct!!! The third week is what I call the CAREFUL week..this is the time most hatchers dread the most.. What I do at the third week is dat I carefully clean the ponds, change the water then I add chloraphenical and tetracyclin with a bit of salt.. U have to be very careful when applying the salt..

I leave them till the next day without feeding..ur water must be clean at all times especially dis period.. Then the next day u start feeding them minimally.. And most importantly "PRAY"

@ omode 24, a peleting machine is simply a machine that mould feed ingredients into shape and sizes (mm). When you gring and mix all your ingredients for local feed, you simply pour them into the peleting machine to produce the feed into different mm - 2, 4,6mm as the case may be.
They come in different capacity and costs. The one am using is about the smallest. - 50kg/hr costs about N220k depending on where you buy. I got mine from a coy in Ibadan.

On the contrary, I kinow a farmer that usually overstocks his pond, uses his formulated local feed but hits an average of 2kg within 6months before sale. Where a normal farmer stocks like 1000 pieces, this man would stock between 3 to 4000. How does he do it?........... Simply clean water. He does flow through. His bore hole is on 24/7. Has a standby sound proof gen.

He uses a limited space but produce more. Though this is not advisable to begginers because of d associated risks and cost. But am looking towards that approach. It saves cost in the long run.

What do you guys think??

Space do less or jampack and apply technology?

We can also guild you on how to build a secured pen for your snails.
SNAIL FEEDS AND FEEDING

Snails feed on a wide variety of food mostly in the night and at dusk i.e. snails are nocturnal and crepuscular. They may also feed during the day when it rains or when the cloud dark.

TYPES OF FEED

• LEAVES: Pawpaw, cocoa yam, cassava variety of low cyanide cabbage lettuce, okra, eggplant and cowpea.
• FRUITS: Pawpaw, mango, banana, plantain, eggplant, avocado pear, oil palm, tomatoes, cucumber, sweet orange, guava, pineapple, coconut, breadfruit, cashew and melon.
• TUBERS: cooked cocoa yam, cassava and white yam, raw or cooked sweet potato.
• FLOWERS: Pawpaw, sunflower, milk bush
• GRAINS: ground maize, guinea corn, cereal
• INDUSTRIAL OFFSHOOTS: Wheat waste, rice, spent grains, maize, maize chaff, soya bean residue
• HOUSEHOLD WASTES: peels of banana, plantain, pawpaw, pineapple, cassava and rice, cowpea bran, beans such wastes should not have salt (sodium chloride) which is inimical to the life of the snails.
• DRY COW DUNNING AND POULTRY DROPPINGS
• CONCENTRATE: Compounded ration can be fed to snails. A ratio with the following nutrient composition will be sufficient:
» Carbohydrate 47%
» Protein 41%
» Fats 11%
» Mineral (calcium)0.6%
» Vitamins 0.4%

• MINERAL SUPPLICATION: For full growth and eggs production snails require a lot of calcium which should be provided in form of calcium carbonate powder, ground oyster shell, burnt and ground snail shell, poultry egg shell or bone meal. Our calcium supplement can take care of this aspect.
• WATER: Clean water provided in shallow containers should be made available to snails at all times. Rain, well or river water is better. Avoid the use of chlorinated water (tap water) or water with insecticides, herbicides or fungicides. The soil environment should be kept moist always.

wealthinfos:
cemented floor is not advisable. snails have the habit if digging into the ground of thier house/pen maybe to lay eggs or relax, so you need to fill the floor with enough loamy soil. loamy soil is dark and can be fetched from a farm land in the bush. On avoiding snail enemies, you need to ensure there is zero access holes, or points for ants, lizards, snakes etc. and other methods of avoiding snail enemies. Also avoid human snail enemies, or else they will invade your farm and cart away with you livestock! cheesy
what if the space one has is already cemented.can't one just fill up the cemented space with the black soil to the right level?

@ all, I received some email asking me about how to guide against soldier ants on a snail farm. Here is my guide for you.

Get large quantity of used engine oil mixed with diesel fuel. Dig a small trench about 12 inch deep 12 inches wide round the whole enclosure you use as farm. It must be away from your perimeter for about 2 feet (24 inches, or 60 cm). Pour the used engine oil mixed with diesel in the trench in good quantity round the farm perimeter. the oil must be enough not to dry up in the trench at any time. So you can do the pouring from time to time. When soldier ants approach, and they perceive the odour of the oil they will go back/away quickly.

Skipped my mind.
Though, you need to first do a feasibility study .

What type of soil is the land composed of? Loamy?
Can you notice any snails in the area on a wet evening?
Are there shade plants such as banana or pawpaw in the land?
Any windbreaks (buildings, larger trees , fencing) ?

I am sure you get the drift now. It would be hard to raise "free range " snails in a site that is unfavorable.
AgricultureRe: Snail Farming Thread -- Let's Make It Work by petitmonde(m): 11:19am On May 12, 2017
lordhugo:
In that case, what you need is an 'Australian styled pasture system' (forget the oyibo). Its relatively cheap to construct for a parcel of land.

You will need steel bars and angle bars (most construction i see online make use of steel pipes...not advisable because total sealing of minute spaces wont be possible) .
A specified number of aluminum sheets for external barrier, nets, imported seeds (seeds are far better than transplanting seedlings) for forage and shelter plants. You could budget less than a million excluding land for half a plot of land. Forget about '6 months', in 18 months you will be diving into money.

For a piece of land measuring 50X100 ft., you could have 30beds for ,
180 Giant breeders
6000 mediums in holding/maturing beds.
4200 newly hatched /juveniles.

There is a plan akin to crop rotation. I call it snail rotation. Lol.

Lets discuss further on whatsapp. I am always on the move. 08030964896

lordhugo:
What type of housing? Free range?

For free range on a large scale (pasture method), all you need is an electric snail tape (it depends on your financial power mainly) . But with it, not one small newly hatched will escape the "openess" of the pasture method.

Might post up pictures of a few examples later if time permits.

Afrocatalyst:
You don't handle them once and relax, you do a control every two weeks round the farm.

This can be done using a knapsack sprayer.(best to buy one for the farm).

Ensure before the breeders arrive, that you treat the soil with a good chemical (probably Newlion Fumigation Chemical).

After which you give it at least two weeks with everday irrigation, before introducing the breeders.

Once they arrive, treat the surroundings(outside the perimeter fencing alone) once every two weeks. Do it as a ritual and you will never experience ants or termites invasion.

Ensure you don't let the sprays of the chemical get into the greenhouse. Very important.
AgricultureRe: PICTURE..Free Range Snail Farming Style In Lagos Nigeria. by petitmonde(m): 7:00pm On May 11, 2017
Afrocatalyst:
Nice observation.

Those ones will be taken care of at the outside perimeter. The ground just round the outside perimeter will be treated once every month with fumigation chemical using a watering can so it can go deeper into the ground. That takes care of underground travellers.
AgricultureRe: PICTURE..Free Range Snail Farming Style In Lagos Nigeria. by petitmonde(m): 6:44pm On May 11, 2017
Afrocatalyst:
We treat the soil before the snails arrive. With cypermethrin(alpha action) + deltamethrin. That takes care of it while the galvanised sheets used in making the perimeter fencing protects the entire field against burrowing animals like lizards, snakes, rabbits and rodents.

According to my findings, being based in akure, i could only tell of two businesses that can pay u that amount and even more. first nigeria being a large country in terms of population, must transport, must feed, cloth. Most nigerians live in rented apartment but i would pick transport and restaurant for u to choose one. In akure they hardly use tricycle neither bus the most common means of transport is nissan primera or almera i prefa almera which costs 750,000 naira plus reg and painting fees +60,000 naira that totals 810k and d drivers pay a delivery of 18k weekly that is 72k montly if u get five of this cars 4,050,000 naira u do be gettin paid 360k monthly. About restaurant, peeps only get to eat swallow at local joint and eat rice at shoprite and chicken rep why not have a chicken rep standard place and sell both. My ex babe runs a restaurant and she makes mor than 10k a day especially on sunday she makes ovr 20 k only she opens on sunday. If u want to call me,my digit is 08101601703
