Foreign AffairsSouth Africa Set To Leave International Criminal Court by petmax2020(op): 2:19pm On Oct 21, 2016
South Africa has begun the legal process of formally withdrawing from the Roman Statute setting up the International Criminal Court.

If it formally withdraws from the statute, it means the country would no longer be bound to the International Criminal Court.

In the ‘Instrument of Withdrawal’ signed South Africa’s Foreign Minister, Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, states that South Africa “has found that its obligations with respect to the peaceful resolution of conflicts at times are incompatible with the interpretation given by the International Criminal Court of obligations contained in the Rome Statute.”

Under that statute, South Africa is obligated to arrest anyone sought by the tribunal.

The United Nations spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, is however yet to confirm if the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon has received the notice of withdrawal from South Africa.

South Africa is exiting the ICC after a controversial visit by Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir, who was wanted by the tribunal over allegations of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.

President al-Bashir in June 2015 was in Johannesburg to attend an African Union summit but the South African government refused to arrest him.

During the visit, provincial court has ruled that the Sudanese president remains in the country while judges considered whether he should be arrested on the ICC warrants.

President al-Bashir left for Khartoum before the court ruled that he should be arrested.

South Afica’s Supreme Court of Appeal later ruled that the government’s refusal to arrest President al-Bashir was a “disgraceful conduct”.

SportsLeicester City Made History In The UEFA Champions League by petmax2020(op): 12:40pm On Oct 20, 2016
English Premier League defending champions Leicester City have made history as they are the first club from England to win their first three matches in the UEFA Champions League following wins over FC Copenhagen, FC Porto and Club Brugge and can now reach the last 16 with a point in their next fixture.

Speaking to Journalists, Coach Claudio Ranieri said: “We are the record team! We are in a good position, our destiny is in our hands and we want to continue in this way.
It’s good to go in the Europa League [Leicester now look assured to finish third at worst in the group], at least.

"Now we have to go into the next round of the Champions League and we will go step by step.”

“For this reason I put him (PFA player of the year Mahrez) on the bench against Chelsea,” said the Foxes boss. “Now it’s right, eh?”

Ranieri also praised Goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel for making a brilliant save in the 90th minute to deny former Cardiff striker Andreas Cornelius.

“Thank you to Kasper. Thank you to all my players, because in every high ball Copenhagen is very strong,” he said.

“It was a good performance, totally different from the Premier League, but that is normal when a team like Leicester plays for the first time in its life in the Champions League.

“From one side, I’m very proud. From the other side when I think of the Premier League, I’m very, very angry. But it’s OK because in my career this has happened.

"When for the first time you play in a big competition, you lose something when you go back in your league.”

Visa CEO, Charlie Scharf is stepping down, saying he needs to spend more time with this family on the East Coast of the United States -- and away from Visa's San Francisco headquarters.

"Now we need to spend more time on the East Coast," he said without elaborating.

Scharf notified Visa's board of directors about his plans in mid-September. They decided to replace Scharf with a current member of the board, Alfred F. Kelly, Jr.

On the same call, Kelly commended Scharf for putting his role "as a husband, father and son ahead of his job."

Scharf also sits on the board of Microsoft, which is headquartered in the Seattle area. It's unclear if he will remain there.

EducationUniversity Of Ibadan Explores Solar Power Energy by petmax2020(op): 5:11pm On Oct 15, 2016
The University of Ibadan may soon get off the national power grid and move on to solar energy, as the institution’s 10 megawatts solar power plant comes on stream.

Located within an extension campus of the institution in Oyo State, south-west Nigeria, the initiative, which is a Nigerian-German energy partnership project, is expected to supply energy to the university and its environs.

It will also serve as a research hub for engineers and also last for at least 25 years.

The clean energy initiative, located in Ajibode community, has been in the works for over two years between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Republic of Germany.

Senior officials from both countries were at the location on Friday to witness the launch of the 10 megawatts solar power plant for the University of Ibadan.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Abel Olayinka, is optimistic that the project will impact greatly on the curriculum of the engineering students and also save huge expenditure on diesel generators.

On the other hand, the Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, who initiated the programme when he was the Vice Chancellor of the institution, hopes the initiative will be replicated in other teaching hospitals.

The solar power plant, which would be completely assembled in six months, will be a solution to the poor power supply in the institution and its environ when completed.

SportsArsenal Can’t Rely On Young Players To Win Titles -arsene Wenger by petmax2020(op): 4:38pm On Oct 13, 2016
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that the club cannot depend on young amazing talents like Nigerian player Alex Iwobi and Hector Bellerin to win major titles despite the 20yr old Nigerian being a major game-changer since he joined the first team last season.

Wenger says it's important to have the perfect mix of young talents and experienced players if they are to win titles at the end of the season.

"To be a real football player, you need to be 23 years old because you have learned your job, you can have a great game and after, sometimes an average game," Wenger said.

"You can have one or two exceptional talents, like at the moment we have Hector Bellerin and Iwobi, but the core of the team has to be from 23 to 30.

"If you look at the national teams, you never win a tournament with a young team, because it's more mental at some stage to win something big.

"You need to have a certain level of experience."

Foreign AffairsWhite House Accused Israel Of A Betrayal Of Trust by petmax2020(op): 1:00pm On Oct 06, 2016
The White House accused Israel of a betrayal of trust Wednesday, in an unusually sharp rebuke over its plans to build hundreds of new settlement homes deep in the West Bank.

Days after President Barack Obama approved a $38 billion Israeli military aid package and attended former president Shimon Peres’s funeral in Jerusalem, the White House railed at the construction of 300 housing units on land “far closer to Jordan than Israel.”

Warning that the decision jeopardizes the already distant prospect of Middle East peace as well as Israel’s own security, press secretary Josh Earnest said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s word had been called into question.

“We did receive public assurances from the Israeli government that contradict this announcement,” he said. “I guess when we’re talking about how good friends treat one another, that’s a source of serious concern as well.” The sharper-than-normal comments come as the White House weighs a last-ditch effort to get the peace process back on its feet before Obama leaves office in January.

While serious talks seem unlikely, US officials are weighing the possibility of a major speech outlining the parameters for peace. Peace efforts have been comatose since a US-led initiative collapsed in April 2014.

SportsCesc Fabregras Vows To Fight On For Antonio Conte by petmax2020(op): 4:12pm On Sep 23, 2016
Spanish midfielder Cesc Fabregras denied ever wanting to leave Chelsea despite limited game time since Antonio Conte took over.

The former Arsenal and Barcelona man has only played 32 minutes of Premier League football this season, but was in action in Tuesday’s EFL Cup win over Leicester City.

Fabregras, 29, took the opportunity to remind Conte of his qualities by scoring a B.race, including the match winner in extra time.

“I’m tired of the news that says that I’m offering myself to other clubs. I’m one more of the team and I will keep fighting to play here,” Fabregas told Cadena COPE.

“If I knew that I have no level to play in this team, I would leave, but I’m happy here. It hurts a lot not to play, but I know that I have enough level to play here and I will give my best.”

“I spoke with Conte. We like him very much, he’s a great coach, very hard and he says the things very clear. We are very happy with him.”

As for speculation that La Liga giants Real Madrid were keen on his services, Fabregras refuted the claims and insists he is ready to stay in London and fight for his place.

“I never planned to leave Chelsea,” Fabregas added. Real Madrid? Maybe they called me or maybe not. But I didn’t think to leave Chelsea, not even for a second.”

PhonesChina Not Included In Samsung Note 7 Global Recall by petmax2020(op): 6:27pm On Sep 14, 2016
Samsung says the galaxy note 7 smartphones sold in China, are not included in the global recall resulting from a slew of battery explosions.

The global recall which was announced by Samsung electronics on September 2, started as a result of batteries purportedly over-heating and bursting to flames.

This has caused Samsung’s stock prices to have a free fall, and the handset has been banned on all flights.

A staff member from Samsung, however, said that so far, there have been no reports on faulty batteries in China, as their battery suppliers are different from those that produce the explosion-prone ones.

More than 16,000 units have so far been sold on two leading e-commerce platforms in china, the staff added.

Due to the recall in several countries however, reports says that Samsung Electronics Co Ltd’s shares, have fallen to their lowest level in nearly two months.

Analysts predict that the recall could torpedo Galaxy Note 7 sales, and have a lasting impact on the $211 billion company’s brand image, which could derail a recovery in its smartphone market share against rivals like Apple Inc.

Flora Ugwunwa set a new world record in the women's javelin - F54 event on Tuesday at the Rio Paralympics to give Nigeria its seventh gold medal.

She recorded a throw of 20.25 metres after six attempts to win the gold medal and take Nigeria's tally to seven gold, two silver and one bronze medals.

On a day when Nigeria's medals search was looking to be futile after some failure in the favourite hunting ground of power-lifting, the athletics event provided succour.

Ugwunwa beat a field of nine to set new Paralympic and world records, while Tunisia's Hania Aidi won the silver medal with a throw of 18.88m.

South Africa's Ntombizanele Situ completed the African sweep of the event's medals by winning the bronze medal with a heave of 17.90m.

Earlier in the day, Nigeria had been so close but still far from winning any medal on the day after some unsuccessful outings.

He later posted a video on his Instagram page showing him undergoing treatment on the injury.

He is considered a doubt at this stage to feature in Friday’s home match against Liverpool.

IslamNigerian Muslims Mark Eid-el-kabir Amidst Financial Constraints by petmax2020(op): 12:52pm On Sep 12, 2016
Muslim faithful across Nigeria are celebrating the Eid-el-Kabir, although under financial constraints triggered by economic recession.

Eid-el-Kabir is coming barely two weeks after a report by the National Bureau of Statistics showed that the oil-rich nation’s economy had glided into recession.

The harsh economic tides the nation is in started with the drop in crude oil price and then the resurgence of militant activities in the Niger Delta, dipping the nation’s output by 700,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 1.56 million bpd in the last six months.

Despite the reduced revenue for the nation and some state’s inability to pay salaries due to lowered allocations, the cost of goods are on the increase.
Price of ram has soared with over 80 per cent at a period of economic recession. Many in celebration mood lament the high cost of items needed for the celebration.

Removing The Hardships

They blame the high cost of rams on the economic recession and inflation, with prices soaring by 80 to 100 per cent.

The sellers are also feeling the pinch as their rams are in excess with few buyers.

Amidst the high cost of goods, the government has reiterated its commitment to removing the hardships the country is going through

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday congratulated Nigerians, particularly Muslims on the occasion of the Eid-El-Kabir, saluting their steadfastness in spite of the difficult economic times Nigeria is going through.

In a special message to Nigerians, the President said, “the lessons of the Eid are piety and sacrifice and, my dear brothers and sisters, you have exhibited these in equal measure”.

“The present recession is as a result of cumulative effects of worldwide economic downturn and failure in the past to plan and save for difficult times. It is impossible to separate the present from the past to appreciate the extent to which mistakes of the past are affecting everyday life today.

“I assure you that this administration is working round the clock to remove the hardships the country is going through. Rail and road constructions, projects in the housing sector, support for farmers and for small and medium scale industries, youth and women’s empowerment programmes, support for revival of industries are all designed to reinvigorate the economy and enhance living standards of ordinary people.

“We are getting security right. We are stopping corruption in its tracks and we will get the economy right by the Grace of God.

“I enjoin Muslims to live by the dictates of Islam, to keep good relationships with their Christian brothers and sisters and as patriots to maintain the spirit of the Nigerian nation.

“I wish everyone happy holidays,” the President stated.

On his part, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Yakubu Dogara, urged Nigerians to never forget to pray for the nation, highlighting that the pains the citizens were undergoing were occasioned by decades of maladministration and the near collapse of a mono product economy.

SportsEPL: Conte Disappointed As Chelsea, Swansea Play 2-2 by petmax2020(op): 10:58am On Sep 12, 2016
Chelsea on Sunday evening dropped their first points of the English Premier League season as Diego Costa struck twice to rescue a draw at Swansea City.

Costa capitalised on woeful Swansea defending to fire the dominant visitors into a 1-nil half-time lead.

But Gylfi Sigurdsson’s penalty and Leroy Fer’s bundled goal two minutes later turned the game on its head.

Costa scored an acrobatic late second to salvage a point for Antonio Conte’s team, who stay second in the table.

In spite of the heroic fightback however, Chelsea manager, Antonio Conte, saw the result more like two points lost, rather than a point gained.

“It is difficult to talk about the game because I think today we lost two points.

“We were dominant in the game, were leading 1-0 and we created a lot of chances to score the second and third goal. Just in two minutes the match changed.

“I am disappointed because, when you have the opportunity to kill the game, you must kill the game but then, this is the English league,” he said.

Fighting in Syria’s western Hama province displaced an estimated 100,000 people between Aug. 28 and Sept. 5, the United Nations said on Wednesday, citing the Syrian Arab Red Crescent and the governor of the province.

Syrian rebels launched an offensive last week in northern Hama, an area of strategic importance to President Bashar al-Assad that is home to loyalist towns populated by minority Christians and Alawites. Rebels rapidly captured the town of Halfaya. Pro-Assad forces have hit back with heavy air strikes.

Many people had fled from the fighting towards Hama city and neighbouring villages, as well as north into Idlib province, the U.N. said.

There were originally about 4,500 families in the town of Halfaya, of which 2,800 remain trapped by the fighting while the rest managed to flee, the U.N. report said.

PoliticsChinese Company Wins $1.85 Billion Kano Railway Contract by petmax2020(op): 3:27pm On Aug 30, 2016
China’s state-owned railway construction firm has been awarded a $1.85 billion contract to build a light railway line in Kano State, north west Nigeria.

The China Railway Construction Corporation Ltd issued a statement saying two of its subsidiaries had been provisionally awarded the light railway project in Kano.

“The contract amount of the project is approximately $1.851 billion, accounting for approximately 2 percent of the operating revenue of the company for the year 2015,” it said in the statement, issued to the Hong Kong stock exchange.

The contract is for four lines, totalling 74 km (46 miles) and capable of carrying trains travelling at a top speed of 100 km per hour.

“This award is subject to the fulfilment to all conditions spelled out in the letter of intent from the financing bank and the final approval by the presidency of Nigeria,” it said. A spokesman for the president declined to comment when contacted by Reuters.

A government source said contracts of this nature are usually passed to the cabinet for approval.

The company said it expected the first and second phases of construction to each last for two years, but did not give details of when work was expected to start if approved.

The Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun said earlier this month that 60 billion naira ($180 million) in additional spending would be allocated for capital projects as part of the 2016 budget to boost the economy.

Adeosun said Nigeria would tap partnerships with the private sector to boost investment and the government was also in talks with General Electric to develop and operate rail services to improve transport for goods.

Yobo spoke at the inauguration of Ikoyi Prisons Football Academy on Saturday in Lagos.

“I have never been to the prisons before but on getting to Ikoyi Prisons, I realised the need to give hope to someone.

“The Joseph Yobo Foundation is ready to do everything within its means to grant bail to as many as possible that are awaiting trial, especially those in the facility’s football academy. I am happy with what is going on in this facility. I have never been here before but when I got here, what I saw jolted me,’’ he said.

“I thought I will see persons looking very sad, rushing to go out but rather, I saw them very happy, cheerful and looking very hopeful.

“I must indeed commend the authorities of the Nigerian Prisons Service because from what I have seen on ground, the service is in the right track.’’

Yobo said that it was in this light that his foundation would seek to secure the bail for some of the inmates, train them and support them in the academy.

Joseph Yobo Foundation is collaborating with Sisters Cities Vocational/Rehabilitation Centre and the Nigerian Prisons Service in the latter’s football academy project, “Football Stars Behind Bars’’.

Among the dignitaries that graced the event was a former Governor of Cross River, Donald Duke and his wife, Onari.

SportsMaradona Beefs Messi, Again! by petmax2020(op): 8:10am On Aug 26, 2016
Diego Maradona has questioned the motives behind Lionel Messi’s decision to retire from international football and his subsequent U-turn.

Messi announced his intention to step down from Argentina duty in the immediate aftermath of the Copa America final defeat to Chile in June.

But following talks with new Argentina boss Edgardo Bauza, Messi has made himself available once again and is expected to feature in the meeting with Uruguay on September 1 and the trip to Venezuela five days later.

Bauza has called for an end to what he referred to as “Messi-dependence”, but Maradona has suggested the whole saga is a ruse to mask Argentina’s recent failures at international level, with defeats in the 2014 World Cup final, the 2015 Copa America final and the title-match at this year’s Copa Centenario still fresh in the memory.

South Africa's population is estimated to be 55.91 million of which 51% are female, according to Statistics South Africa's mid-year calculations.

Announcing the figures at a media conference in Pretoria on Thursday, statistician general Pali Lehohla said migration is an important demographic process in shaping the age structure and distribution of the provincial population.

The largest share of South Africa's population (24%) lives in Gauteng accounting for 13.5 million people. KwaZulu-Natal is the province with the second largest population, with 11.1 million people (19.9%).

With a population of approximately 1.19 million people (2.1%), Northern Cape remains the province with the smallest share of the South African population.

The figures also showed that about 30.1% of the population is aged younger than 15 years and approximately 8% (4.47 million) is 60 years or older.

Of those younger than 15 years, approximately 23% (3.86 million) live in KwaZulu-Natal and 20.4% (3.43 million) live in Gauteng. The highest percentage of people (26.1% or 1.17 million) aged 60 years and older live in Gauteng.

Like elsewhere in the world, the proportion of elderly persons aged 60 and older is increasing over time.

BusinessMark Zuckerberg Headed To Italy After Earthquake by petmax2020(op): 9:31am On Aug 25, 2016
Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg is flying to Rome to chat up local Facebook users, days after a devastating earthquake struck central Italy.

He announced his trip on Wednesday afternoon and said he will hold a live question and answer session while there on Monday. Anyone who has a question, Italy-related or otherwise, can leave it in the comments section of his post.

It's unclear if Zuckerberg will visit any affected towns during his trip. He said he was "looking forward to spending time with our Italian community after last night's earthquake in central Italy."

He also said Rome was a special city to him. He and his wife Dr. Priscilla Chan honeymooned there, and Zuckerberg says he studied Latin and Classical history.

The social network has also taken on an unexpected role in international disasters. After events like earthquakes, hurricanes, or bombings, people let friends and family know they're OK with Facebook's Safety Check feature.

Launched in 2014, the tool started a side project and has quickly grown into a important feature for anyone trying to reach family.

Facebook activated Safety Check in Italy Tuesday night after the 6.2-magnitude earthquake, which has left at least 132 people dead.

SportsI Spend Arsenal Money As If It Is Mine, That Why Am Scared To Buy Players – Arse by petmax2020(op): 2:19pm On Aug 24, 2016
Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, has admitted that he treats the club’s money as if it was his own.

The Gunners boss, who is notorious for being shrewd in the transfer market, also confessed he is nervous about making mistakes when it comes to buying players.

Last summer, Wenger bought only Petr Cech from Chelsea and has also made one big-money signing this summer – £30million for Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka.

In a new book titled Game Changers: Inside English Football by Alan Curbishley, Wenger said: “I personally believe the only way to be a manager is to spend the club’s money as if it were your own, because if you don’t do that you’re susceptible to too many mistakes.
