BusinessBill Gates Is Now Worth $90 Billion by petmax2020(op): 5:55pm On Aug 23, 2016
Bill Gates' net worth has crossed the $90 billion threshold, according to a real-time rankings from Bloomberg's Billionaire Index.

Gates' net worth climbed not because of any stock rise at Microsoft but because of jumps in the shares of Canadian National Railway Company and Ecolab, two smaller companies in which he has holdings.

He's well ahead of Amancio Ortega, the Spanish retailer who is the world's second richest man. Ortega's fortune is $76 billion.

Forbes, which also tracks billionaires' wealth, estimates Gates' net worth at a more modest $78.7 billion.

Forbes also says that Gates' net worth briefly topped $100 billion back in 1999, back before the federal antitrust case decision against Microsoft that year and the bursting of the tech bubble in early 2000.

According to Bloomberg, Gates' net worth is up $6.2 billion so far this year, but that's only the fourth biggest gain among billionaires on the index.

Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has enjoyed an $8.9 billion jump in his net worth, while Harold Hamm, CEO of shale oil producer Continental Resources, has seen his net worth more than double. Hamm's fortune gained $7 billion, lifting his net worth to $13 billion.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos' net worth rose $6.5 billion this year. He is now virtually tied with Warren Buffett for third place on the ranking of world's richest men.

BusinessSouth Africa Sun International To Ditch Nigeria by petmax2020(op): 6:16pm On Aug 22, 2016
Hotel and leisure conglomerate Sun International announced on Monday that it will exit Nigeria.

In its results announcement for the year to end-June 2016, Sun International said its hotel and casino complex Federal Palace continues to operate in a difficult environment with the Nigerian economy facing a number of crises including the low oil price, Boko Haram and a weakening naira. The country also has still not recovered from the significant impact the Ebola epidemic had on the business.

In addition to problems faced by the country, there are a number of issues specific to the local Nigerian partners in the Federal Palace and these have further exacerbated matters, Sun International said.

Sun International, which had invested more than $50m in its Nigerian operations, said continued setbacks in Nigeria - including the ongoing shareholder dispute - have frustrated all attempts to develop and improve the property.

It also lamented the fact that its employees at the Tourist Company of Nigeria, in which it holds a 49.3% stake, had been put at risk.

"Five of our staff members who were detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission earlier in the year have still not had their passports returned to them despite no charges being laid against the individuals, the company or Sun International.

"As a result of the current environment and issues facing the company the board has taken the decision to exit our investment in Nigeria."

Sun International, however, said it expects the exit to be a protracted process, given the challenges it faces and to ensure it receives fair value for its investment.

In the review period the occupancy of Federal Palace at 41.6% was 6.8% below last year's figure, with the average room rate up 3.8%.

The company said that despite all efforts to keep costs as low as possible, earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) declined 58%.

Sun International said the Nigerian debt has always been, and remains, ringfenced to the Federal Palace, without recourse to the group balance sheet.

Other South African companies which have pulled out or made their intentions clear to exit the country, which is battling its worst economic crisis in decades, include Woolworths, Truworths and Tiger Brands, while MTN took a knock from a massively reduced fine of $1.7bn. After months of deliberations, Nigeria agreed in June to cut the fine initially demanded by almost 70% after MTN threatened to shut down its operations in the West African nation.

Sun International shares were trading 0.63% down at R91.51 by 11:14.

Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic believes the club can go on to win the EPL title at the end of the season.

The reds have recorded victories from the two opening match of their campaign. They beat Southampton and Bournemouth under Mourinho.

And the evergreen 34-year-old believes United have all the makings to go on and land their first league title since 2012-13, but admits a long road lies ahead.

“I believe that we can win the title, I have this vision,” said Ibrahimovic. “But we need to work hard for it and we will do everything to bother all the other teams that want to win.

“Now I’m just focusing on trying to help my team win and after two games we have two wins, which is the most important thing.

Foreign AffairsMauritania Court Jails 13 Anti-slavery Activists by petmax2020(op): 5:53pm On Aug 20, 2016
Thirteen anti-slavery activists in Mauritania have been sentenced to up to 15 years in prison for their alleged role in a riot in June.

A tribunal found the members of the Resurgence of the Abolitionist Movement (IRA) guilty on Thursday of counts including attacks against the government, armed assembly and membership of an unrecognised organisation.

The defendants said they were not present at the June protests and that the trial was a politically motivated attempt by the government to discredit their organisation.

The decision was condemned on Friday by international campaigners as a "devastating blow to the Mauritanian anti-slavery movement".

Sarah Mathewson, Africa Programme Manager at Anti-Slavery International, said that the activists were "clearly being targeted by the government for their work to expose and denounce slavery, still commonplace in the country".

IRA Vice President Brahim Ramdane called the verdicts a "parody of justice" and said the group's lawyers were deciding how to respond.

The activists were arrested in late June and early July after a protest against eviction by residents of a slum in the capital Nouakchott, many of whom are themselves former slaves.

SportsFour Great Players Pep Guardiola Fell Out With! by petmax2020(op): 1:07am On Aug 20, 2016
Here are four great footballers Pep Guardiola fell out with in his managerial career:

1) Samuel Eto’o:

Eto’o had scored 36 goals in the treble winning Barcelona side that were almost impossible to beat in the 2008/2009 season.

But his goal poacher status couldn’t save him from Guardiola’s might.

In his first media briefing, Pep announced publicly that Eto’o had no place in his team.

The Cameroonian was subsequently shipped out to Inter Milan in the deal to bring Zltan Ibrahimovic to Barcelona.

2) Ronaldinho:

“When you play with him [Ronaldinho] and see what he does with a ball, nothing surprises me any more. One of these days, he will make the ball talk.” — Eiður Guðjohnsen.

Ronaldinho’s time at Barcelona was decorated with so many trophies, and individual honors, including two FIFA World Player awards.

The signs were clear that Guardiola immediately found Ronaldinho, who was plagued with so many injuries in the 2007/2008 season, surplus to requirement when he took over the Barcelona job.

The great Ronaldinho was eventually shipped to Ac Milan, a deal Guardiola happily endorsed.

3) Dante:

Dante was signed to Bayern Munich for an estimated fee around €4.7 million.

He immediately made an instant impact, eventually cementing a place in the starting XI. Perfect.

His team-mate and club captain did not waste time to heap praises on the player.

“Dante is one of the best defenders I’ve ever played with.”– Philip Lahm said.

Records were broken too.

Bayern Munich broke records for fewest goals conceded and most clean sheets in a Bundesliga season during their treble winning campaign, with Dante in the heart of defense.

Guardiola came on board to Bayern in the 2012-2013 football season and what a time for Dante to show his worth again to the new Boss? Right?

Except, in Dante’s first game under Guardiola, the defender scored an own goal after a mix-up with goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

Recurring errors by Dante forced his manager to sign Mehdi Benatia as a quick replacement.

Dante was subsequently sold to VfL Wolfsburg for an undisclosed fee.

4) Yaya Toure:

The expeditious rise of Sergio Busquets in the beginning of the 2009/2010 season was what you will term as “Bad Market” for Yaya Toure at Barcelona.

And Guardiola didn’t waste time to promote Busquets to the first team at the expense of Toure who was eventually sold.

Now Guardiola and Yaya Toure are in Manchester City and the episode is likely to repeat itself.

Last week, Ibrahimovic said he would stay at the right club for “more than three years”.

BusinessCisco Cut Up To 5,500 Jobs by petmax2020(op): 8:19am On Aug 18, 2016
Cisco confirmed Wednesday that it will slash 5,500 jobs, or about 7% of its total workforce, to cut costs and make room for investments in trendy new areas like cloud computing and the Internet of Things.

"Today's market requires Cisco and our customers to be decisive, move with greater speed and drive more innovation than we've seen in our history," Cisco said in its earnings release announcing the cuts. "We expect to reinvest substantially all of the cost savings from these actions back into these businesses and will continue to aggressively invest to focus on our areas of future growth."

The layoffs, while significant, are smaller than had been rumored. CRN, a technology publication, first reported Tuesday that Cisco planned to cut 14,000 jobs or almost 20% of its workforce.

Cisco is pushing to make the shift from pricey networking hardware for businesses to software and cloud services.

Under CEO Chuck Robbins, who took over from John Chambers about a year ago, Cisco has pushed to stay competitive through a $1.4 billion acquisition of Jasper, a company focused on the Internet of Things, and through partnerships with businesses like Apple.

Despite those concerns, the layoffs come as Cisco remains in a position of some strength.

Cisco's earnings and revenue beat Wall Street estimates for the quarter ending in June. Overall sales hit $12.6 billion for the quarter, up 2% from the same period a year earlier.

Cisco is far from the only tech company making layoffs this year.

SportsPep Guardiola Urges Sterling To Stay Focused by petmax2020(op): 2:10pm On Aug 17, 2016
Manchester City Manager, Pep Guardiola has challenged the England forward, Raheem Sterling to stay focused after showing an impressive performance against Steaua Bucuresti on Tuesday.

Guardiola was full of praise for the Manchester City forward at the first leg of UEFA Champions League play-offs, but insists he can improve even further.

“Until now, Raheem is playing really good but he’s only 21-years-old so he has to learn a lot, Guardiola told ESPN.

“The best advice is to keep calm and focus on his training, his body and his personal life. Then when that happens he has a lot of quality — he’s fast and has good work ethic.

“He can go byline or inside. When he comes inside to play he has the quality to link up with his teammates. He’s a fantastic player and that’s why I think (Director of Football) Txiki (Begiristain) and the club were so clever last summer to buy him.”

SportsFootball Legend Who Thinks Messi Is Still Better Than Neymar! by petmax2020(op): 8:38pm On Aug 16, 2016
Lionel Messi remains ahead of Neymar as the best player at Barcelona, according to former Brazil star Rivaldo. Goal reported.

Neymar has claimed two LaLiga and Copa del Rey doubles, as well as the Champions League, since completing his controversial move from Santos to Camp Nou in 2013.

Rivaldo, twice a league champion with Barca and a key part of Brazil’s World Cup triumph in 2002, recently backed his compatriot to become the world’s leading player if he continues to develop under Luis Enrique.

But the 1999 World Player of the Year and Ballon d’Or winner concedes that Argentina star Messi is still his old club’s leading light.

“As a Brazilian, I’ve really enjoyed the progress Neymar has made for the last two years,” he told L’Equipe.

“But for all that he has achieved over the past decade, the excellent season that he was still able to have, but also his immense talent, Lionel Messi is still, for me, the star and the best player at Barca.”

SportsJohn Terry Believes Hazard Is Back To His Best Form by petmax2020(op): 5:03pm On Aug 16, 2016
John Terry has hailed Eden Hazard’s return to form and believes the Chelsea midfielder is back among “the very best in the world”.

Hazard endured a dismal 2015/16 campaign, failing to score in the Premier League for 27 matches as Chelsea slumped to a 10th place finish – their first outside the top-six since 1996.

But the 25-year-old did not have to wait long for his first goal of the 2016/17 season, netting just after half-time in Chelsea’s 2-1 opening day victory over West Ham.

“He’s up there with the very best in the world for me,” Terry told Chelsea’s official website.

“We relied on him too much last season and he can’t do it all on his own even though he almost does.

“He’s a world-class player and we’re very lucky to have him.”

BusinessOil Prices Surged 10% In Just 3 Days by petmax2020(op): 2:39pm On Aug 16, 2016
Oil Prices surged 10% over just the past three trading days to above $45.50 per barrel on Monday. Just two weeks ago, oil had fallen below $40 per barrel.

No, the big oil rally isn't being driven by signs of accelerated growth in the sluggish global economy. In fact, the latest stream of economic indicators have been sluggish.

Instead of fundamentals, crude is being carried higher by vague hopes that OPEC, Russia and other major oil producers will agree to "freeze" production.

The latest freeze buzz is being driven by unscheduled September OPEC meeting in Algeria, and new comments from Saudi Arabia's energy boss.

But this is not the first time that hopes of a freeze has driven mini rallies in oil.

Infact, the last attempt to freeze production in April failed spectacularly. Oil watchers warn that prices could be getting ahead of themselves.

PoliticsBill Gates Foundation Donates $ 1million To Borno Idps by petmax2020(op): 3:44pm On Aug 15, 2016
The Melinda and Bill Gates Foundation have given the Borno State government a grant of 1 million Dollars, meant for resettling the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Borno State.

The foundation is aimed at targeting displaced victims of insurgency ready to return to their ancestral homes.
The intervention was released through the Rebuilding and Reconstruction Ministry of the State, constituted for resettling the IDPs.

Governor Kashim Shettima flagged off distribution of food items in Mainok town where locals are already returning in large numbers.

Nearly two million people, dislodged from their home towns, in remote parts of Borno State by insurgency, had found temporary shelter in the capital city and safer havens in nearby states.

The recent military successes and recapture of some of the troubled towns has paved way for locals to return to their home towns.

Residents of Mainok town in Kaga Local Government Area are happy to return home after nearly two years sojourn in makeshift camps.

Governor Kashim Shettima said aside food items farmlands have been procured in the first phase of the intervention, to enable the IDPS continue with their lifestyles.

One of the IDPs, Halimatu Ali in appreciation said, “We are grateful, we have never received any kind of help since we returned, we only hear about it until today. We thank Bill and we pray for him.”

Child soldiers brandishing Dane guns and unconventional weapons is a common sight in Mainok, even as the Civilian JTF leave nothing to chance in their quest to totally rid the town of criminals.

From their experiences with remnants of the insurgents since their return, they are requesting equipment and vehicles to boost the complementary roles with the military.

A member of the CJTF, Umar Mustapha said “We the Civilian JTF always go round on patrol and interrogate suspicious people around, we have made several arrests and handed the criminals to the military. If we had vehicles, we can even go after them in the bush.”

Mainok, barely 70 kilometers to Maiduguri has been a stronghold for the Boko Haram insurgents from where they attack travellers, shutting Maiduguri from other parts of the country until early last year when they were dislodged.

SportsNeymar Hoping For Better Luck Against Nemesis Colombia by petmax2020(op): 4:15pm On Aug 14, 2016
The last time Neymar faced Colombia, he was sent off and went on a rant that led to a four-match suspension. The time before, he left the field on a stretcher with an injury that ended his World Cup at home.

Neymar has no fond memories of those recent matches with the senior team. Now he hopes for better luck in the Olympics when Brazil and Colombia meet in the quarterfinals Saturday.

A loss at the Arena Corinthians in Sao Paulo would mean another huge disappointment for the Brazilian star, who arrived at the Rio Games with the responsibility of leading the nation to its first gold medal in soccer.

A good performance by Neymar is critical. To that end, he rested during Friday's practice because of a right ankle injury.

"We need him to be ready to play on Saturday," coach Rogerio Micale said.

Neymar was provoked by opponents in the last two games against Colombia. He was ejected in the 1-0 loss in the group stage of the Copa America last year, eventually being suspended after confronting the referee in the tunnel to the locker rooms.

Foreign AffairsUS Condemns Indonesian Anti-lgbt Statements by petmax2020(op): 7:03pm On Aug 12, 2016
The United States criticized Indonesia on Thursday for saying there is "no room" for the gay community in the world's most populous Muslim-majority country.

"We encourage Indonesia, which rightly prides itself on diversity and tolerance, to respect and uphold international rights and standards by ensuring equal rights and protections for all of its citizens," State Department spokeswoman Elizabeth Trudeau told reporters.

Earlier on Thursday, Indonesian presidential spokesman Johan Budi told AFP that "rights of citizens like going to school and getting an ID card are protected, but there is no room in Indonesia for the proliferation of the LGBT movement."

He was responding to criticism that officials recently unleashed a wave of angry rhetoric against Indonesia's lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community.

Washington is "closely monitoring reports of possible measures in Indonesia that would restrict the freedom of expression for LGBTI individuals," Trudeau said.

Foreign AffairsNo Room For Gay Community - Indonesia by petmax2020(op): 6:07pm On Aug 11, 2016
Indonesia on Thursday said there was "no room" for the gay community in the world's most populous Muslim-majority country, as activists blasted officials for an unprecedented series of LGBT attacks.

A wave of angry rhetoric directed at homosexuals earlier this year - including a call to ban them from university campuses - was the first time senior officials had publicly attacked the Southeast Asian nation's gay community, Human Rights Watch said in a report released Thursday.

Indonesia's lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) citizens have long been targeted by vigilante Islamist groups.

But the community experienced an "immediate deterioration" in their rights following a sustained assault by ministers, religious hardliners and influential Islamic organisations over a two-month period, HRW said.

In response, the government said protecting LGBT rights was not a priority.

BusinessNigeria Customs Service Reviews Trade Agreement With Benin Republic by petmax2020(op): 6:36pm On Aug 10, 2016
As part of efforts to curb smuggling activities and increase revenue drive, the Nigeria Customs Service on Tuesday reviewed the trade facilitation agreement between Nigeria and the Benin Republic

The agreement, which has been in use since June 2005, was reviewed due to some challenges in its operations.

Although heads of customs in both countries agreed to the new course, they warned that sanctions awaited any country that would deviate on the terms of agreement.

Seme border, one of the towns bothering Nigeria and the Republic of Benin that gives access into the city of Lagos by land is one major route that the Nigeria Customs Service is focusing on.

Going by records, it is one of the highest revenue generation point for the Nigeria Customs different from the sea ports.

To plug revenue leakages as a result of smuggling activities, the initial agreement was reworked to chart three major courses – commence actions on formal interconnectivity, through the setting up of an ICT base station, set up a consultative framework that will meet twice a year to address all emerging issues and undertake quarterly evaluation of the implementation of this agreement.

After the reworking of the agreement, it was presented to the management teams of both countries
