Nigeria’s Bendel Insurance and Enugu Rangers have secured their places in the final of this year’s edition of FA Cup. The two Nigeria Professional Football League rivals overcame their opponents on Thursday to book their spot in the final.

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti has announced that his administration intends to employ a minimum of 5,000 teachers to address the shortage in primary and secondary schools. In his inaugural speech at the Umuahia Township Stadium on Monday, Otti disclosed his administration’s plan to employ at least 5,000 teachers to address the shortage in primary and secondary schools. He stated that this was part of his administration’s commitment to rebuilding the school system, which would produce quality students that would be relevant to the needs of modern society.

The governor also noted that he would work with his team and relevant stakeholders within the next month to design an appropriate framework for the recruitment process. The governor emphasized that young graduates in education, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, as well as those willing to serve in rural communities, would be given priority.

He said: “We shall see to it that our teachers undergo regular refresher courses to update their knowledge and teaching skills so that they will stay relevant in their chosen fields.

“It must also be stated that under our government, teachers shall never be shabbily treated as reportedly had been the custom in the past.

“The paucity of infrastructure in our educational system shall be addressed stridently.”

Meanwhile, Otti has also declared a state of emergency on refuse disposal and waste management in Umuahia and Aba, the commercial nerve centre of the state. He emphasized that a healthy urban environment would be a top priority for his government and has directed the State Environmental Protection Agency to evacuate all refuse heaps within the two cities.

The governor has also announced that his administration will commence the payment of May salaries and pensions to all civil servants and retirees in the next few days.

“There shall be no more distinction between the so-called ‘core’ and ‘non-core’ civil servants in the state.

“From June, all salary and pension obligations of the state would be settled by the 28th of every month.

“My commitment during my campaigns to pay off all outstanding salary and pension arrears remains sacrosanct.

“Within the next one week, I shall set up appropriate mechanisms to ensure that all legitimate employees and retirees are identified and paid their due entitlements,” Otti said.

Governor Otti emerged victorious in the March 18 governorship election under the banner of the Labour Party.

The International Air Transport Association, IATA, has stated that with the operationalization of the 1500-hour flight rule, there is a brain drain in Africa concerning qualified pilots.

IATA Director General, WIllie Warsh, disclosed this recently during the “Focus Africa” virtual launch.

He explained that while Africa suffered the mass exodus of Pilots, the United States of America and Canada enjoyed brain gain.

Walsh pointed out that the 1500-hour rule has created a situation where highly qualified individuals leave their home region or country for better career prospects in the USA over time.

“The 1500-hour rule has caused a shortage of qualified pilots in the USA, not Europe. It makes the country attractive. In Africa, it leads to a situation whereby talents leave the continent to other countries,” he said.

The 1500-hour rule means the number of flying hours required to become a qualified commercial Pilot in the USA and Canada.

Meanwhile, the rest of the world only needs 250 hours to qualify as a Commercial Pilot.

Montana has become the first American state to pass legislation that outlaws the use of TikTok, with the law expected to go into effect in 2022. Many US lawmakers have been calling for a national ban on the Chinese-owned social media platform, citing concerns over its security and impact.

Under the new law, each time a user accesses and/or downloads TikTok, they will be in violation and face a $10,000 fine per day. Additionally, Apple and Google will be required to remove the app from their respective app stores. Companies that violate this law will also face possible daily fines.

The move is expected to be challenged in court by various companies and individuals who claim that it infringes on their First Amendment rights. Some advocates argue that the ban is actually rooted in anti-Chinese sentiment and unfairly targets TikTok users. ACLU Montana Policy Director Keegan Medrano criticized state political leaders, saying that they have “trampled on the free speech of hundreds of thousands of Montanans who use the app to express themselves, gather information, and run their small business…”

However, the ban will be voided if TikTok is acquired by a company that is incorporated in a country not designated as a foreign adversary by the United States.

TikTok has been the target of several governments worldwide. The app is owned by Chinese company ByteDance, and many western governments claim that it is being used by the Chinese government as a tool of espionage. Despite TikTok’s insistence to the contrary, the US government has banned the app on government devices, and Montana’s new law is just the latest in a series of measures taken against the popular social media app.

Nigerian workers poorer under APC, says Atiku

Former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, has said the current N30,000 minimum wage is inadequate to cater to the average Nigerian worker.

Mr Abubakar, who was the candidate of the opposition People’s Democratic Party PDP, made the remark in a message to Nigerian workers to commemorate the 2023 International Workers Day on May 1st.

While encouraging the workers to stay optimistic, Mr Abubakar observed that the hyperinflation in all sectors of the nation’s economy under the current administration has constituted serious socio-economic strangulation for the Nigerian worker.

“In Nigeria of today, the minimum wage of N30,000 cannot buy a full bag of rice, let alone cloth or pay for a worker’s many utility bills.

“Hyperinflation in all sectors of our nation has constituted serious socio-economic strangulation to the average Nigerian worker, who’s now poorer than in 2015 when APC came to power,” he said.

Mr Abubakar advised workers to see the 2023 Worker’s Day as a moment for “sober reflection and stock-taking given the myriad of socio-economic tribulations facing them in the last eight years.”

He added that the lives and welfare of workers and their families have been reduced to the “abyss of mere existence due to the litany of policy errors by the ruling APC government, which created insecurity in all facets of workers’ lives — food, shelter, health, wealth and education.”

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, has described the demands of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors in an ultimatum issued to the Federal Government as absurd.

Ngige said the government has given the doctors everything they want and their sense of entitlement is “too much.”

NARD had on Saturday given the Federal Government two weeks to meet its demands or face industrial disharmony.

The doctors are demanding an immediate increment in the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure to the tune of 200 per cent of the current gross salaries of doctors.

The doctors also want the immediate withdrawal and jettisoning of the bill seeking to compel medical and dental graduates to render five-year compulsory services in Nigeria before being granted full licences to practise.

They also want the immediate implementation of CONMESS, domestication of the Medical Residency Training Act and review of hazard allowance by all the state governments as well as private tertiary health institutions where any form of residency training is done; among others.

Speaking on Arise Television on Monday, Ngige said the doctors’ demands are absurd and have the option of leaving the country.

He said employers are entitled to keep employees’ salaries if they go on strike.

“If the NARD who we have been managing their matter, we are giving them everything they want, including their Medical Resident Training Fund, we are paying them, even when in training, pay them a full salary, pay them all the allowances and you decided that we have not done enough. Like I said before, you have an option to go. It is left for the education ministry and the health ministry to fashion out what they can do.

“You asked that a bill by one of the members of the House of Representatives be removed and that is one of the reasons you want to go on strike. How can the government tell a member who has done a private member’s bill… It is not even an executive bill, you now release it as one of the conditions of going on strike, that is absurd.

“The entitlements syndrome, the sense of entitlement is too much in this country and like I said earlier, you obey the law you look odd, you apply the law, you look odd or you are a wicked man. I don’t have any apologies for whatever I have done in the management of trade disputes,” Ngige said.

The Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, has said his government is committed to the development of a new airport in Auchi, Edo North Senatorial District of the State after it got tentative approval from the Federal Government.

Briefing journalists in Auchi, at the weekend, Obaseki noted that the government is working with aviation experts to finalise the survey of the airport project.

He said, “The charting of the airport is already ongoing to ensure the safety measures required for approval of the airport project as safety is the main consideration.

“We want to make sure that the approaches for landing on the airport runway are clear and safe for landing and will not endanger the aircraft.

“These are the final reports and studies that are being conducted and as soon as we get final approval, we will break ground and commence construction of the Auchi Airport,” the governor reassured.

He added, “This is not a political project. Between Benin City and Abuja on this axis, which is more than 600 km, there is no airport.

“From the transportation standpoint, it makes a lot of commercial sense to have an airport in Edo North. More importantly, there are emerging businesses, particularly in the areas of mining and academia.

“There are two cement companies producing over 6 million tonnes of cement in this axis. There are a lot of activities to support an airport in this area.”
