Politics / FG Explains Whereabouts Of Chinese Medical Team by phenomental40(m): 8:48pm On May 19, 2020 |
https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/05/fg-explains-whereabouts-of-chinese-medical-team/ The Chinese doctors arrived Nigeria on Wednesday. Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola disclosed that the 15-member Chinese medical team came into Nigeria on the bill of CCECC and that they are still in the country. He said; “Indeed, 15 Chinese nationals came into Nigeria on April 8, 2020 and from everything we have heard and said, they are here on the bill of CCECC, a Chinese company working in Nigeria, doing some work for us in several places and in conjunction with some Nigerian companies agree to support us in the effort to respond to the Pandemic. At Idu in Abuja, they participated in retrofitting and equipping the isolation there. “They equally worked on the Dome project that was handled by the NNPC Consortium in conjunction with Thisday. So, those were the locations in which they came to work. “They helped in retrofitting the two facilities and installing critical, essential and sensitive medical equipment. They came in 15 of them, on April 8. “They came on a 30-day Visa issued in Beijing. They are still here. I do not need to tell you why they are still here. They are still here not because they have not completed their job but because there is a restriction on travels in Nigeria occasioned by the protocol of Covid-19”. |

In another 24 hours, Nigeria would have completed the 2nd phase of the lockdown (14 days to make 28) imposed on Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ogun and Lagos states by President Muhammadu Buhari on March 29. Sadly, despite the lockdown designed to flatten the curve of COVID-19, the number of positive cases has continued to climb. Before the lockdown on March 29, Nigeria had a total of 111 confirmed cases, but as of 11.30pm on April 24, Nigeria had recorded a total of 1,095 confirmed cases with 32 deaths. In Lagos alone, which is the epicentre, the infection rose from 68 cases on March 29 to 657 confirmed cases on April 23. Effective lockdown In Ogun, as of March 29, the state had three cases but as of last Friday, 24 days after, there were 29 cases while FCT figure rose from 21 before the lockdown to 133. Also as of Friday, we had 27 affected states as against 12 states before the lockdown. Experts say although the rise was expected, effective lockdown would have helped to flatten the curve. Many Nigerians apparently ignored social distancing as recommended by W.H.O. during a pandemic of this nature to eke a living amid inadequate palliative by government. Experts say Lagos alone, being the country’s economic hub, loses N108.05 billion per day, when activities are down to zero level. In essence, the commercial capital of the nation would have lost over N3 trillion at the end of the 28-day lockdown. The deduction from the views of the experts is that Buhari faces hard options ahead of the expiration of the lockdown tomorrow. According to them, with the increasing number of positive cases, relaxing the lockdown may be disastrous but Nigerians cannot be locked down indefinitely without appropriate palliative. Doom The President of the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, Dr Francis Faduyile, said allowing Nigerians to move around with the increasing number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the community may spell doom, hence the need for a well planned lockdown balanced with palliative. Faduyile, who warned that government cannot continue to lock Nigerians down without balanced palliative, said the ongoing shutdown was ineffective because the Federal Government failed to balance it with fairly distributed palliative. “Looking at health situation alone, I will say the lockdown should continue but you cannot do that alone; you must balance it with economic, socio-cultural issues and security”, he said. “Government needs to put something in place for us to have an effective lockdown process. If those things are not in place, lockdown will just be a pronouncement and not in action”. Lagos and Kano The NMA top official added that with community transmission going on in two big states, Lagos and Kano, Nigeria ha not been able to flatten the curve. He explained that Nigeria was yet to get to a safe position to ease lockdown looking at health issue, regretting that the aim of lockdown was to stop transmission of coronavirus but it did not happen. According to Faduyile, to contain the spread of the virus, government needs to put on its thinking cap to find a balance between palliative and lockdown. “Sincerely, lockdown is supposed to continue but it might be difficult if you have not put down necessary plans to ease the pain of the lockdown”, he said. “For you to lockdown, you need to find a way to make people stay at home and eat, the palliative must be distributed fairly and we need every activity of government towards that, otherwise, Nigeria may slip into the worst situation”. Stating that the increasing number of cases was as a result of increasing tests, Faduyile said it was one of the gains of lockdown as it helped Lagos and the country at large to discover the communities. Further spread For the virus to be contained, Aliyu added that Nigeria should continue with the lockdown, social distancing, and self isolation. Lamenting that the lockdown has not been highly efficient as many cases are recorded and people have failed to comply with stay-at-home, he said government must put in place measures to ensure that people comply. “Though we have heard of several efforts to get people palliative but that of course has not achieved expected result,” the NARD leader pointed out. “It is not enough to declare a nationwide lockdown without appropriate preparation and ensuring measures are in place for compliance and lockdown will not be complied with if people don’t get palliative”. Extension While calling for extension of the lockdown, Aliyu said if palliative cannot be improved upon, there was no point for extension or nationwide lockdown as people need to survive. According to him, government must be more realistic and honest about palliative at least for the downtrodden before considering lockdown extension. “It is a fact that as much as 50 percent of Nigerians are living below the poverty line. These are people that go out every day to fend for themselves. If palliative is not sincerely provided, it will be difficult for them to comply”, the resident doctors’ association chief said. He called for compulsory use of face mask by Nigerians to reduce the spread of the virus. National lockdown On his part, the National President, National Association of Nigerian Nurses & Midwives, NANNM, Abudulrafiu Adeniji, who called for national lockdown, said it was not the right time to ease lockdown, hence the need for government to increase awareness about the effect of the disease. “We are talking about a disease that has already affected millions of people with no specific treatment and so many people are asymptomatic”, Adeniji said. “In some states where there no cases before, they have started recording index cases. The worst thing is that Nigerians are very mobile. “When Wuhan in China was locked down, we all heard that people were not moving in or out of Wuhan. The issue of lockdown should be reconsidered following what is happening in Kano now, let Nigerians exercise patience. Prediction “If we don’t do things right now, the prediction of Melinda Gates may come to pass. The graph is not flattening at all. It is still going up and that means we are yet to see the end of the disease. “We are talking about hunger; even when there is no lock down, there was hunger in the country. But government needs to put in place better palliative and not the one that falls in wrong hands. If it is only N10 that government can provide for every household, let it go round.” Adeniji urged Nigerians to understand the devastating effect of COVID-19. He further appealed to Nigerians to desist from hiding their status and medical history when they go to hospital or dealing with health workers. Meanwhile, National President of Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals/ Vice President, Joint Health Sector Union, Dr Obinna Ogbonna, supported total lockdown following the increasing number of infected persons by the day. Ogbonna regretted that many Nigerians are yet to know the gravity of COVID-19. Reminding Nigerians that there was no specific treatment for the virus currently, he said it was necessary for people to stay at home to respect lockdown because the virus cannot move by itself but through human beings. The union leader warned of possible overwhelming surge of infection in communities if nationwide total lockdown was not imposed. On palliative, he recommended that government can adopt the town planners’ statistics to know the number of houses in a particular environment for effective distribution of materials to the right people. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/04/buhari-under-pressure-faces-hard-options/ 2 Likes |

Health / Kidney Disease : Why You Should Not Take `agbo` by phenomental40(m): 12:29pm On Mar 18, 2019 |
By Vivian Ihechu
According to the World Health
Organisation (WHO), traditional medicine
is generally available, affordable, and
commonly used in large parts of Africa,
Asia, and Latin America.
WHO estimates that about 80 per cent of
the population in developing countries
still depend on traditional medicine for
their Primary Healthcare (PHC) needs;
however, this percentage may vary from
country to country.
In Nigeria, many people, especially in the
South-West region, believe and rely on
local herbs for medication.
`Agbo’, the Yoruba name for herbal
medicines, is a concoction prepared from
a variety of herbs and; it is one of the
most popular herbal preparations taken
for various ailments, especially by the
native Yoruba people.
It has also seen a lot of patronage and
acceptance by other tribes too; Agbo can
be soaked in water, alcohol or even palm
wine before one drinks it.
However, medical experts raise concerns
on the after-effects of taking Agbo,
especially over a long period of time.
One of such concerns is that it can
damage the kidney and liver; also, there
are concerns on its preparation which
include the handling, dosage requirement
for each ailment, shelf live and expiration
date.
Recently, at an event to commemorate
the 2019 World Kidney Day on March 14,
experts raised awareness on the
importance of guarding against acts
which can lead to kidney disease.
The event which was organised by the
Renal Dialysis Centre, Allen Avenue, Ikeja,
Lagos, saw experts also emphasising the
need to reduce or even desist from
consuming local concoctions, especially
Agbo because of the possible resultant
effects.
Dr Chinedu Odum, a Nephrologist, said:
“In this environment, we talk about
herbs and we hear many people say the
take Agbo’’ or herbs.
“They say the herbs clean their system
but the truth is that this concoction
people are taking, some of them have a
bad effect on the kidney. It can damage
the kidney.
“It is a lot cheaper to prevent kidney
damage because once you have kidney
damage there is no going back; even
those who are rich can’t maintain,
afford or keep up with dialysis.
“They can’t even maintain or afford
to have kidney transplantation, not to
talk of the masses who are not generally
or financially equipped to take care of the
disease.
“So, we want to implore people to be
aware of kidney disease but more
importantly, to be more aware of the
factors that increase the illness.”
However, Odum highlighted other causes
of kidney disease to include high blood
pressure which is the number one causes
of kidney disease in Africa and of which
many people don’t know that they
have it.
“Apart from blood pressure, diabetics
and anyone who has long standing high
blood sugar can come down with
complications; one of the complications
is kidney disease.
“Also, bleaching; some of those creams
have some components which can
damage the kidney; they also have
components that will increase the risk of
diabetes and blood pressure.
“The environment we live in is also very
important; infection in this environment
too contribute to kidney disease; so we
have people who come down with
frequent urinary tract infection.
“If it is not taken care of, they can have
a chronic kidney infection which can lead
to kidney disease and if that’s not
channeled, we will be talking of
dialysis,’’ the Nephrologist said.
Dr John Okoh, Founder and the Chief
Executive Officer (CEO) of the RDC,
confirms that these concoctions of herbs
have a negative impact on vital organs of
the body, especially the kidney.
He urged Nigerians to be aware of the
causes and risk factors of getting kidney
disease.
Dr Nkem Achor told NAN that one of the
major concerns in consuming Agbo is
that one cannot ascertain the dosage and
expiration of the mixture, hence the
tendency to either under-dose or over-
dose.
“People who take Agbo do not know
when it becomes under dose or over
dose and this can affect the multisystem
functions of the kidney and liver, which
are critical to the functioning of the
body.
“Also, it can lead to blood poisoning,
gastrointestinal challenges, vomiting,
diarrhea, anemia, and even death, if
mismanaged or not detected early.
“However, one is not ruling out the
efficacy of these herbs, but it is worthy
to emphasise that if it is to be taken, it
should be after thorough scientific
research and approval.
“Also, the preparation has to follow the
standard supervised procedure under
hygienic circumstances with appropriate
dosage requirements spelled out and
expiration date written.
“If these are not adhered to, people will
continue to take Agbo indiscriminately;
some may get lucky and be healed but a
majority will come down with more
debilitating and chronic situations which
may be too late for hospitals to
handle’’.
Dr. Ebun Bamgbose of the Dialysis/
Transplant Unit and Clinical Director of St.
Nicholas Hospital, Lagos, in an earlier
interview said that most of the kidney
failures, also known as renal failure or
end-stage renal disease, could be linked
to indiscriminate use of these
concoctions.
This is because the herbs are mixed with
all sorts, including local gin and there are
toxic substances in the unprocessed
materials and fermentation.
In summary, a research was conducted
by Akande IS, Adewoyin OA, Njoku UF and
Awosika SO of the Department of
Biochemistry, College of Medicine,
University of Lagos, Akoka, Yaba, Nigeria.
The research, “Biochemical Evaluation
of Some Locally Prepared Herbal
Remedies (Agbo) Currently on High
Demand in Lagos Metropolis,
Nigeria’’, was published in the Journal
of Drug Metabolism & Toxicology,
affirmed the negative effects of Agbo on
the body.
It said: “Based on these findings, we
conclude that though these preparations
are potential sources of natural
antioxidants, but the majority of those
being hawked on Lagos metropolis may
be harmful to human health.
“This is because many of the hawkers
are likely to be quacks.
“There is also a need for
standardisation of dosage regimens and
close scrutiny of pedigree of the peddlers
of these herbal remedies by appropriate
government agencies,’’ the research
prescribed. |
Health / Facts About Breast by phenomental40(m): 4:59am On Mar 17, 2019 |
1. Breast size is hereditary. You have an equal chance of inheriting your chest size from either parent, which is why your sister may have much larger breasts than you. 2. Not all breasts are created equal. Equal in size that is. In fact, one breast is usually about one fifth larger than the other. (If you're curious, it's generally the left side that has the size advantage.) 3. The average bra size in the U.S. is a 34DD. Which is significantly larger from just 20 years ago: a 34B. 4. Your boobs aren't just made of fat. They are a complex system of glands and ducts, which also includes your nipple. And underneath each breast is muscle, as well as fibrous tissue that separates it from your ribs. However, after a certain age, your breasts do turn into mostly fat. 5. Gaining weight can make your boobs larger. And if you lose weight? You might notice that your breasts shrink. But this isn't the same for every woman since some women have denser breasts with less fatty tissue. Other factors: Pregnancy, breast-feeding, menopause, birth control pills, and even sex can cause your breasts to swell. Your breasts can also grow as much as a full cup size during your menstrual cycle. However, days after your period, your hormone levels drop and your bustline is at its smallest. Thanks, hormones! 6. Sagging is inevitable. Unless you have corrective surgery, getting older means your breasts will sag over time. Other culprits include gravity, smoking, and sleeping. In fact, if you're a stomach sleeper, you might consider changing positions. Some reports show that sleeping on your stomach can actually change the shape of your breasts. 7. When you exercise, your boobs move around. Like, a lot. One study found that when you run, regardless of size, your breasts could move up, down, and all around as much as eight inches. (Picture a figure eight motion.) That supportive sports bra is sounding mighty nice about now, isn't it? 8. Having a third nipple isn't uncommon. Actually, about 6% of the population has a third (or more) nipple with extra breast tissue. These extra breasts can even lactate and become sensitive during menstruation. 9. The first breast augmentation surgery took place in 1962. And now it's the most popular form of plastic surgery in the United States, and has been since 2006. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 290,000 people got breast implants in 2013 — a 1% increase from 2012. The average cost? A little more than $3,600. 10. We are the only primates with permanent breasts. As humans, we grow breasts before puberty even starts, and they continue growing and changing throughout our lives. (They get larger especially during menstruation and when we are pregnant.) However, other primates' breasts grow only when they're breast feeding. 11. There are four types of nipples. They are protruding, flat, puffy, and inverted, which are all normal. 12. The average boob weighs between one and two pounds. Although it varies from woman to woman, most breasts range in this weight. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the woman with the largest natural breasts in the world wears a size 52I bra. And they weigh almost 100 pounds. |

Politics / Rivers Is Ours , Insists PDP by phenomental40(m): 7:20pm On Mar 16, 2019 |
By Dirisu Yakubu ABUJA – Following the declaration by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to resume collation of results in the Rivers state governorship election which held recently, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has expressed optimism that it will continue to preside over the affairs of the state after the exercise. This is even as the party tasked the electoral umpire not to take people of the oil-rich state for granted, stressing that they had already voted for the PDP governorship candidate, Nyesom Wike in the March 9 election. Speaking exclusively with Sunday Vanguard yesterday, National Publicity Secretary of the party, Kola Ologbondiyan, said from the results already collated, Wike has won, even as he warned against tampering with the will of the people. He said, “We are waiting for INEC to announce winner of the election in Rivers. This is the same election that has already produced state lawmakers. We don’t know why the governorship poll has suddenly become difficult for them to do. “From the results already collated, our candidate is clearly ahead. So, we call on the umpire to its job and announce the winner without further delay. On supplementary governorship elections slated for March 23, the publicity scribe added that the stand of the party remain that its candidates in the affected states should be declare winners, having harnessed more votes than their counterparts on the first ballot. “We showed our strength in Adamawa, Benue, Plateau, Sokoto, Bauchi and Nasarawa states and we reiterate the fact that our popularity with the people is the reason they gave their mandate to our governorship candidates in these states. “The people are waiting anxiously for INEC to do the needful. The electorate in these states know their rights and they are not prepared to be shortchanged. The earlier those who think they are too powerful to the right thing realise this, the better it will be for us all,” he added. Education / What Is IQ (intelligent Quotient) by phenomental40(m): 4:35am On Mar 16, 2019 |
What is IQ? I.Q. (intelligence quotient) in general, is an assessment of your ability to think and reason. IQ score is a standardized way of comparing this ability with the majority of people the same age as you are. A score of 100 means that compared to these people in your general age group that you have basically an average intelligence. Most psychologists would say those scoring in a range of 95 to 105 are of a normal intelligence or have an average IQ. Actual IQ score may vary plus or minus five points since it is very difficult to get an IQ score with complete accuracy. Keep in mind, there are many outside factors that may have a negative impact on your score. For instance, if you are not feeling well at the time of taking the test. Or perhaps you are distracted by something on that particular day. These things may affect your score. Additionally, IQ is not the be all end all of a person's abilities in life. IQ score fails to measure things such as manual dexterity (obviously), musical talent, and a slew of other abilities that may lead one to many different successes in life. However, your score on an IQ test will give you a pretty accurate indication of the ability you possess to think, reason and solve problems which can often be critical in many phases of your life. Politics / Election: PDP To Petition UN Over Use Of Military by phenomental40(m): 3:12am On Mar 05, 2019 |
By Dirisu Yakubu ABUJA- Arising from its Expanded Caucus meeting on Monday, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has resolved to petition the United Nations, UN, over the role the military allegedly played in the February 23 Presidential and National Assembly elections. Addressing newsmen at the end of the meeting, spokesman of the party, Kola Ologbondiyan said PDP would align with its Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar in his quest to “reclaim his mandate,” following his decision to go to court to contest the outcome of the polls. He said, “The caucus noted the role of the military in the February 23 election and resolved that we will report the action of the military through a petition to UN as well as other global democratic institutions on the role of our military in the Feb 23 election. “Caucus further raised issues about the harassment, intimidation and cajoling of our members on the plot by the presidency as well as All Progress Congress, APC to intimidate former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and the resolve of the PDP to go to court by insisting, blackmailing and saying that he should not go to court. We insist that our party and our candidate have resolved to seek legal redress on the stolen mandate.” According to him, the party’s caucus also “commended Nigerians for refusing the harassment, intimidation and militarisation of the electoral process and participating in the election but noted that the mandate that was freely given to our candidate was stolen and as such, the party and the candidate jointly resolved to go to the tribunal and reaching the end of what is permissible within our legal system to get back our mandate on behalf of Nigerians.” The party, according to the publicity scribe, also resolved to appeal the judgement of the Federal High court sitting in Kano which nullified the candidacy of the PDP governorship flag bearer, Abba Yusuf. The party further decried the “militarisation of the South-South and the rigging which the APC is plotting ahead of the election,” even as it urged Nigerians to come out enmasse and participate in the governorship elections. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2019/03/elections-pdp-to-petition-un-over-use-of-military/ |

Business / Gambling And My Advice by phenomental40(m): 6:39am On Sep 07, 2018 |
Good day, am very sure everyone that plays gambling (nairabet,bet9ja and so on) knows inside of him or herself that playing gambling does not help financial situation it rather makes one life miserable, an addiction could be deadly. I know of a certain guy in my neighbourhood who owns three boutique living well before being introduced to gambling of sport activities online and in shop, its experienced that when a gambler lose money he try to win it back sometime by hard means which in almost all cases make them fall prey to endless debt, the man who owns the boutique after three months playing gambling does not own a thing like magic, le lost everything friends, house, his boutique business, he now sleeps on the street looking for where to steal from to survive. Every gambler is a loser, I work in a company where I earn about 60,000 naira per month same is my story I keep believing the game could but its the other way round each month I kept on entering debt to debt, my room is now empty, I can't clothe my properly, I find it hard to feed, with what I earn my mum and dad hardly gets a dim from me, all because of gambling. Right now am thinking of selling the few valuable I have like phone and fan at home just to survive, my life have been on the decline since I started playing online gambling. On a responsible guys hand the 60,000 I earn monthly is more than enough to satisfy his needs and still have savings then what is wrong with me?. The most happiest man is the man that find contentment in the little he have. I decide to stop gambling and focus on my work, my progress, my family , pay the debts I owe which will take me time and to forget what I have lost to gambling and move. That's my advice for everyone who partake in gambling to stop playing it and think of his or her future, take a step to talk to family or experienced person for help on how to stop. You can't beat them that's the reason more and more betting companies are on the rise. A responsible man does not gamble. Warn your husband, wive, children, friends, and neighbour. If you are thinking of starting it, please don't even start. 14 Likes 1 Share |
