Nairaland General › Re: The Black Bra Confraternity: Myths And Truths by phlame(m): 11:09am On Dec 23, 2017 |
Ottyemmy2: The Black Bra Confraternity: Myths And Truths...Black Bra is a female confraternity and as it is with many other groups, this sorority was formed in response to their male confraternities. See more details about Black Bra Confraternity below.
At the initial stage, the members were girlfriends of the male cult members.
The history of cultism can be traced back to 1952 when a group of seven students formed the Pyrates Confraternity. Interestingly, Africa first Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka was a member of that group.
At the time, the pioneer members of the Pyrates called themselves the “Magnificent Seven” the vision of the group at that time was to differentiate themselves from the hypocritical and affluent middle-class folks that dominated the University of Ibadan campus at that time. The motto adopted was “Against all conventions”
This was the only cult group in existence for almost two decades. When the other confraternities like , Eiye and Vikings began to spring up, they were initially old members of the Pyrates Confraternity.
Back to the Black Bra Confraternity, we have highlighted some core features of Black Bra members as well as what it takes to be initiated.
Black Bra Confraternity: Dress code As the name implies, the Black Bra Confraternity members wear black clothing. Usually, their bra or underpants are usually black in colour.
ALSO READ: NTEL Data Plans, Voice Plans, Subscription Prices & Store Locations Black Bra Confraternity: Appearance You can almost tell a sorority member by her appearance. Their rugged and wild look is one feature that can’t be overlooked. Usually, this mien is quite intentional as it tends to create fear or intimidate those around. Also, members tend to live a life of heavy drug and alcohol use which can be observed from their speech and mannerisms.
Black Bra Confraternity: Body marks People can have body marks due to accidents or other unsavoury events but this is different with a confraternity member. Usually, they get their marks or scars from their initiation or from clashes with members of rival cult groups.
Black Bra Confraternity: Identity Confraternity members usually have double lives. Their movement and actions are often suspicious. If you know one, she’ll probably tell lies to cover up her movement and activities. Also, it is quite common for them to have a double identity. For example, the real name of a Black Bra member often differs from what she’s called by her friends and fraternity members.
Black Bra Confraternity: Language Cultists often have a specific language which they use in communication. They use these signs and codes to pass information to their fellow confraternity members. This prevents outsiders from decoding their movement or actions and to keep things secret where possible.

Black Bra Confraternity: Prostitution Fraternity members are often involved in prostitution where they offer their body for money.
Apart from the characteristics of a Black Bra member, the initiation process is another interesting thing about the group.
Black Bra Confraternity: Initiation One of the conditions prior to joining the Black Bra cult is being deflowered or sex romp on the day of initiation. This occurs in the presence of other members of the cult.
Also, the newbie will be expected to make a cut in her thumb. After which, she will cook a special kind of soup with this blood which she will drink along with her clan.
As it is with other cults, once an individual has been confirmed a Black Bra member, she cannot leave until death. However, the individual can leave to another clan as long she’s sure of protection by this clan.

13ShadesOfMay: Africa is a predominately a traditional society that has evolved over the years. It is interesting that there are still many taboos which have refused to go away despite advancement of many countries in the region.
Some actions that are categorized as taboos have a social or religious explanation which restricts people from engaging in them. As a result, some of these taboos still influence how many African communities handle certain issues.
Here are 5 African taboos that people have refused to let go.
1. Consummating with relatives
Having sex with one’s relative is a taboo considered as the worst form of sin in most African communities. As such, people that were known to have engaged in this act are usually outcast. The level of modernization in many communities have not stopped this practice.
In Africa, it is believed that engaging in such act attracts many tragedies to the family and the community. Poverty, epilepsy, stunted progress and occurrence of epidemics were cited as consequences. For some communities, both individuals found culprits are killed to conciliate the gods or ancestors.
2. Disrespecting the elderly
One of the core fabrics of African customs is ‘Respect’. Hence, disrespecting an elder is considered misgivings to the young person.
It also is a common practice that young people are not allowed to shake hands with an elderly person, or for opposite sex (either married or single) to hold hands or display any romantic display in the presence of an elderly person.
3. Family and staying In-laws
In many communities in Africa, there are taboos as regards relating to one’s in-laws or marriage relatives. For instance, it is unacceptable for a father-in-law to visit while the husband is not around.
Also, some communities disallowed not naming a first child after the groom’s father or mother – based on the sex of the new baby.
4. Pot breaking – Accidental or intentional
Pot breaking is still considered a great taboo in many parts of Africa, including Southern Nigeria. This object made of clay is generally considered the uterus of women which have to be handled with care.
Among the Gikuyu tribe (the largest ethnic group in Kenya) and Igbo tribe of Nigeria, a special ritual is performed to appease the god and cleanse a woman who broke a cooking or water pot.
5. Food taboo
Food taboo is also one practice that modernism has failed to take away from many communities in Africa. For instance, consumption of some fruits is strongly discouraged for women during pregnancy. In some Central African countries, eating of eggs is forbidden for children.
