While abandonment is bad, Igbo culture does not speak to "abandonment" that may sometimes follow divorce.

Igbo culture focuses on discouraging the practice of making girls, baby mamas. So if you impregnate her, without marrying her, then the kid belongs to her family.

However, if you marry her, a subsequent divorce does not mean that the children cease to be yours. They are still your children and should still bear your name.

We are talking Fahrenheit here, not Celsius. Texas gets into the 100’s. Even cooler areas get into the 100’s when there is a heatwave.
Also the little girl wasnt at home. She was sitting in a car in the parking lot of her mom’s job. Some of those parking lots are huge and not safe for a 9 year old to wonder around all day. She probably admonished to stay in the car. Also the heat in the parking lot is only marginally better than the heat in the car. Leaving the car and airconditioner running or going into a rest area at her moms job (which she probably wasn’t allowed to) were the options available to the little girl
