Travel / Nigeria Has Four Of The Most Polluted Cities In Th World-who by phveektor(m): 5:38pm On Jun 01, 2016
According to data released by the World Health Organization (WHO), four of the worst polluted cities in the world are in Nigeria.

The four Nigerian cities listed are:

Onitsha, a city few outside Nigeria will have heard of -- has the undignified honor of being labeled the world's most polluted city by air quality. A booming port city in southern Nigeria, Onitsha recorded 30 times more than the WHO's recommended levels of particulate matter concentration.

The other three cities named and shamed in the WHO report are the transport hub of Kaduna, in the north, which came fifth, followed by the cities of Aba -- in sixth place -- and Umuahia, in 16th position, which are both trade centers in southern Nigeria.

Why is Nigeria so polluted?

The contributing factors to pollution are a reliance on using solid fuels for cooking, burning waste and traffic pollution from very old cars," Dr Maria Neira, WHO Director, Department of Public Health, Environmental and Social Determinants of Health, tells CNN.

At home, due to unreliable electricity supplies, many Nigerians rely on generators, which spew out noxious fumes often in unventilated areas.
On the street, car emissions go unregulated.

Steps towards a solution

"We need to do an assessment of the sources of pollution at city level, also work on better planning of urban collective transport systems, and take very old cars out of service," says Neira.
"Regarding the four cities in Nigeria, we would actually like to praise them. They are at least monitoring the pollution levels, others are not even monitoring the air, we know that some are very polluted.

"These four cities are moving towards taking action to reduce pollution."

Travel / World's Longest Tunnel Commissioned Today by phveektor(m): 4:47pm On Jun 01, 2016
The world's longest and deepest rail tunnel has officially opened in Switzerland today.

The 57km (35-mile) twin-bore Gotthard base tunnel will provide a high-speed rail link under the Swiss Alps between northern and southern Europe.

The tunnel has overtaken Japan's 53.9km Seikan rail tunnel as the longest in the world and pushed the 50.5km Channel Tunnel linking the UK and France into third place.

The project, which cost more than $12bn (£8.3bn) to build, was endorsed by Swiss voters in a referendum in 1992. Voters then backed a proposal from environmental groups to move all freight travelling through Switzerland from road to rail two years later.

The completed tunnel travels up to 2.3 km below the surface of the mountains above and through rock that reaches temperatures of 46C.

Engineers had to dig and blast through 73 different kinds of rock, some as hard as granite and others as soft as sugar. More than 28m tonnes of rock was excavated, which was then broken down to help make the concrete used to build the tunnel.

Now the completed tunnel, delivered on time and within budget, will create a mainline rail connection between Rotterdam in the Netherlands and Genoa in Italy.

When full services begin in December, the journey time for travellers between Zurich and Milan will be reduced by an hour to two hours and 40 minutes.

The tunnel's course is flat and straight instead of winding up through the mountains like the old rail tunnel and a road tunnel opened in 1980.

About 260 freight trains and 65 passenger trains will pass through the tunnel each day in a journey taking as little as 17 minutes.

Foreign Affairs / Top Model Snags Jail For Insulting President by phveektor(m): 10:52pm On May 31, 2016
A former Miss Turkey was handed a 14-month suspended prison sentence on Tuesday for insulting President Tayyip Erdogan through a poem she shared on Instagram, the latest of at least a dozen Turks to face such a sentence.

An Istanbul court found model Merve Buyuksarac, 27, guilty of insulting a public official but suspended the sentence on condition she does not repeat the act for the next five years, local media said.

Insulting the president is a crime punishable by up to four years in jail in Turkey.

The law was used infrequently until Erdogan won the presidency in August 2014, since which time prosecutors have opened more than 1,800 cases for insulting him, including against cartoonists, journalists and teenagers.

Buyuksarac, who was crowned Miss Turkey in 2006, was briefly detained last year for sharing the poem on Instagram in 2014. It was called "the Master's Poem" and referred to a high-level Turkish corruption scandal in 2014.

Foreign Affairs / No To Xenophobia As Internet Giants Sign "Online Code Of Conduct by phveektor(m): 1:59pm On May 31, 2016
An online “code of conduct” aimed at fighting hate speech has been launched by the European Union in conjunction with four of the world’s biggest internet companies.

The code of conduct represents the first major attempt to codify how technology firms should respond to hate speech online. But the limited scope leaves many aspects of online abuse still uncovered: harassment on gender grounds, for instance, is not considered hate speech according to the code of conduct.

Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Microsoft have all been involved in the creation of the code, which is particularly aimed at fighting racism and xenophobia across Europe. Such efforts are hampered by varying enforcement in different countries, something the code is tackling.

It also encourages the social media companies to take quick action as soon as a valid notification is received.

The code define "hate speech" as all conduct publicly inciting to violence or hatred directed against a group of persons or a member of such a group defined by reference to race, colour, religion, descent or national or ethnic origin.

Sports / Marko Reus Omitted Again Due To Persistent Injuries by phveektor(m): 1:15pm On May 31, 2016
First it was in the world cup, now he's been omitted from Germany squad.

The medical staff could not give a clear prognosis for Marco," Low said of Reus's omission, which comes on his birthday.

"He has massive injury problems and the medical staff was very sceptical about his ability to last through the coming weeks and such a gruelling tournament.

"It is a bitter decision and bitter for Marco."

Meanwhile, Manchester united's Bastian Schweinsteiger, Liverpool midfielder Emre Can, Arsenal's Mesut Ozil and former Gunners attacking midfielder Lukas Podolski, now at Turkish side Galatasaray, have all been included as the world champions search for their first European title since 1996.

Germany squad:

Goalkeepers: Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich), Bernd Leno (Bayer Leverkusen), Marc-Andre ter Stegen (Barcelona)

Defenders: Jerome Boateng (Bayern Munich), Emre Can (Liverpool), Jonas Hector (Cologne), Benedikt Hoewedes (Schalke 04), Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund), Shkodran Mustafi (Valencia), Antonio Ruediger (Roma)

Business / Naira Debit Cards To Be Replaced With $usd Denominated Cards For Foreign Transac by phveektor(m): 10:55am On May 31, 2016
So late last night, I got this email from my bank with the following details:

Kindly be informed that effective June 1, 2016, you will no longer be able to use your Naira denominated Fidelity Debit Cards (MasterCard and Visa) abroad. This usage restriction is largely due to the persistent volatility in the foreign exchange market.

Your Naira denominated cards can only be used locally at the POS terminal, ATM and online on Nigerian web stores.

Our USD denominated Debit MasterCard will nevertheless continue to work everywhere in the world. You can get one instantly at any Fidelity Bank branch and have it linked to your USD Domiciliary Account. Additionally, our Verve Debit Card can also be used in Kenya and at select ATMs in Benin Republic.

From the way things happen in Nigeria, this is a directive from the country's central bank and many, if not all, other banks too will be taking up the directive.

Romance / Women Want Sex More Than You Think! by phveektor(m): 8:13pm On May 30, 2016
Women may want more sex than their husbands or partners think, research have shown.

The researchers believe that men underestimate their partner’s desire to avoid sexual rejection. If a man initiates sex and his wife rebuffs him, he may feel bad or resentful and she may feel annoyed. By assuming she isn’t interested and not initiating sex, he avoids this downward spiral. And he also may work harder to entice her, which may explain why she still feels content on those days. “It is better for the relationship for him to under-perceive, because it avoids complacency,” says Amy Muise, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Toronto.

How much sex is “normal”? Almost 80% of married couples have sex a few times a month or more: 32% reported having sex two to three times a week; 47% say they have sex a few times a month, according to “The Social Organization of Sexuality: Sexual Practices in the United States,” a 1994 University of Chicago study considered the most comprehensive in the field.

Men have a higher sex drive on average, research has found. But in long-term relationships—typically defined as longer than three years—men are equally as likely as women to be the partner with low sexual desire.

There are a number of reasons why a man might underestimate how much sex his female partner wants, psychologists say. Some women don’t feel comfortable initiating sex. Others give up initiating after their cues are ignored or missed repeatedly. And many just don’t send clear enough signals.

Phones / Mistakenly Installing This Android Malware Can Lock Your Phone And Drain Your Ba by phveektor(m): 11:35pm On May 29, 2016
Mistakenly installing this Android malware can lock your phone and drain your bank account

this Android malware, known as the Fanta SDK, has evolved in capabilities but has kept its mode of operation the same.

This malware operates by changing the user's smartphone PIN, then locking the device, and by doing so, keeps the victim busy while it empty their bank account.

A user first receives an email with their bank's email address spoofed, and they're told that a new security update for their banking application was recently released and that they should update their app. Right now, the app only targets the users of Russian banks.

If the user has one of those apps installed on their phone, they'll likely follow the download link included in the email and download the app on their phone. It is recommended that users update the mobile banking app through the Google Play Store, and not via manual downloads.

After the app gets admin privileges, it will wait for the user to launch the mobile banking app of a targeted bank. At this point, the app will show a popup through which it phishes the victim's banking credentials and then redirects them to the legitimate app.

Health / A Cup Of Lipton Tea And Lime Can Make That Chest Pain Disappear by phveektor(m): 2:43am On May 29, 2016
Green tea is the healthiest beverage on the planet, it is loaded with antioxidants and nutrients that have powerful effects on the body.

This includes improved brain function, fat loss, a lower risk of cancer and many other incredible benefits.

Antioxidants in the diet may help the body in its management of free radicals – highly reactive substances capable of causing damage to body cells.

If that's not enough to convince you that tea is worth trying, take a look at some of these fast facts. Green and black teas offer the same health benefits. Many people don't realize that black and green tea contain virtually the same amount of antioxidants. In fact, whether hot or cold, bottled or using a bag, tea is probably the healthiest drink around.

Drinking a cup of tea a few times a day to absorb antioxidants and other healthful plant compounds. In green-tea drinking cultures, the usual amount is three cups per day.

Allow tea to steep for three to five minutes to bring out its catechins.

The best way to get the catechins and other flavonoids in tea is to drink it freshly brewed. Decaffeinated, bottled ready-to-drink tea preparations, and instant teas have less of these compounds.

Tea can impede the absorption of iron from fruits and vegetables. Adding lemon or milk or drinking tea between meals will counteract this problem.

The health benefits of lime include weight loss, skin care, improved digestion, relief from constipation, eye care, and treatment of scurvy, piles, peptic ulcer, respiratory disorders, gout, gums, urinary disorders, etc.

Business / United Airlines Is Shutting Down Its Services In Nigeria Due To FX Policy by phveektor(m): 11:06pm On May 26, 2016
Reports in the aviation sector says United Airlines, a Chicago-based American airline, is pulling out of Nigeria over difficulty in recovering monies made from tickets sales, due to Nigeria’s foreign exchange policy.

Repatriation has been a significant issue, as has been the downturn in the energy sector, the daily route from Houston to Lagos had underachieved for years but was kept alive because of its importance to Texas-based customers", says a United Airlines spokesman, Jonathan Guerin.

The last flight will be June 30, after which Delta Air Lines Inc. will be the only major US carrier flying to Africa.

Technology Market / Paypal Is Shutting Down Support For Blackberry And Windows Phone by phveektor(m): 12:16am On May 26, 2016
Paypal today joined the list of IT companies withdrawing support for Blackberry and Windows smartphones meaning users will no longer be able to pay for contents purchased via application stores of such mobile platforms.

The company is thinning the number of mobile operating systems supported by the company's flagship app down to just two: Android and iOS. The PayPal mobile apps for Windows Phone, BlackBerry, and Amazon's Fire OS will be discontinued as of June 30th.

"It was a difficult decision to no longer support the PayPal app on these mobile platforms," said Joanna Lambert, PayPal's VP of consumer product, in an announcement on the company's blog. "But we believe it’s the right thing to ensure we are investing our resources in creating the very best experiences for our customers."

Technology Market / Fewer Apps, More Functions; Google Instant Apps Will Give You App Experience In by phveektor(m): 10:59pm On May 20, 2016
“What if you could use ten times a many apps without stopping to download all of them?” ask Michael Siliski, the Google product manager who’s overseeing the Instant Apps effort.

At its annual Google I/O conference this week, Google unveiled what it calls Instant Apps—a new breed of software app that arrives on your phone almost instantly without a lengthy download. The trick is that these Instant Apps are in fact tiny slivers of a larger app that handle very small and particular tasks—such as panning through a 360-degree photo.

When you get, say, that text with the 360-degree 3D photo of the kombucha brewery and tap it, the Instant App will just open, much as webpage would open via an ordinary URL. But what comes next will do more than a webpage—at least in theory. The technology underlying Instant Apps takes advantage of “deep linking,” a wider effort to link to and among apps in much the same way link tie together webpages.

You could still download the full app, if you like. But you don’t have to. If you happen to need the same Instant App in the near future, it may open even faster the second time, since Google plans on caching these app slivers in memory, at least for a while. “Our goal is to have everything be as fast as possible while using as little space as possible,” says Kirk patrick, an engineer who has worked on Android since before the project was acquired by Google.

Phones / Microsoft Likely To Discontinue Smartphone Manufacturing by phveektor(m): 5:37pm On May 18, 2016
Judging from Microsoft's statement on Wednesday that it would unload its low-end phone operations for $350 million to a Finnish startup and a unit of Chinese manufacturing giant Foxconn, which aims to revive the once popular Nokia consumer brand, one can say that the company is done with smartphone manufacturing.

Though the company said it would continue to support existing Lumia phones, the Windows Mobile 10 software and its partner devices, there was no word on future devices suggesting an end to the Lumia line.

Microsoft bought Nokia's mobile devices business for $7.2 billion in 2014, but given the long history of failure stretching back to Nokia, letting go may be the smart bet.

Computer Market / A Note On Disk Drives by phveektor(m): 10:02am On May 18, 2016
HDD‎
The traditional spinning hard drive (HDD) is the basic non-volatile storage on a computer (it doesn't "go away" like the data on the system memory when you turn the system off). Hard drives are essentially metal platters with a magnetic coating. That coating stores your data and a read/write head on an arm accesses the data while the platters are spinning in a hard drive enclosure.
An SSD does much the same job functionally (e.g., saving your data while the system is off, booting your system, etc.) as an HDD, but instead of a magnetic coating on top of platters, the data is stored on interconnected flash memory chips that retain the data even when there's no power present. The chips can either be permanently installed on the system's motherboard (like on some small laptops and ultrabooks), on a PCI/PCIe card (in some high-end workstations), or in a box that's sized, shaped, and wired to slot in for a laptop or desktop's hard drive (common on everything else).‎
Flash memory in SSDs is faster and more reliable than the flash memory in USB thumb drives. SSDs are consequently more expensive than USB thumb drives for the same capacities.

Health / Silent Heart Attack Is Dangerous For Women by phveektor(m): 9:41am On May 18, 2016

The study found that these “silent heart attacks” – which often come without the classic heart attack symptoms of chest pain and shortness of breath -- are more common among men, but are more dangerous for women.

Business / Oil Prices Jump As Global Reserves Face Deficit by phveektor(m): 12:00pm On May 17, 2016
In Nigeria, oil major Exxon Mobil suspended exports from the country's biggest crude stream, Qua Iboe, and other producers have also suffered disruptions following acts of sabotage, cutting the country's output to its lowest in decades at around 1.65 million barrels per day (bpd).

The oil market has gone from nearing storage saturation to being in deficit much earlier than we expected, likely shifted into deficit in May, driven by both sustained strong demand as well as sharply declining production.

In the United States, crude production has fallen to 8.8 million bpd, 8.4 percent below 2015 peaks as the sector suffers a wave of bankruptcies.
And in China, output fell 5.6 percent to 4.04 million bpd in April, compared with the same time last year.
Countering these disruptions, supply rose from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) following the lifting of sanctions against Iran which triggered a race for market share between Tehran and OPEC-rivals like Saudi Arabia, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait.
