We shouldn't forget the people that believed in Atiku to come out and vote for him, not the millions that sat at home hoping he would win.

His region the North-East gave him the lowest number of votes 1,116,873 and the South-East gave him the second lowest amount of votes 1,693,485. The United Kingdom (UK) says Nigerians can have confidence in the outcome of the presidential election that held on Saturday.

President Muhammadu Buhari, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), won the election with Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) coming second.

Harriett Baldwin, UK’s minister of state for Africa, in a statement issued on Wednesday, said the result declared was consistent with the civil society parallel vote tabulation process.

“I offer my congratulations to President Buhari on securing a second term as the Nigerian President,” she said in the statement.

“The UK is a long-standing friend and partner of Nigeria and the Nigerian people, and a stable and prosperous Nigeria benefits Africa and the world.

“The Nigerian people have demonstrated resilience and a commitment to democracy. The result declared by the Nigerian election commission is consistent with the result obtained through the civil society Parallel Vote Tabulation process. Along with our international partners, the UK believes the Nigerian people can have confidence in the result.”

Atiku had rejected the result describing the election as the worst in the history of Nigeria. Following the announcement on Wednesday, he said the election witnessed an implementation of grant theft of the people’s will.

Reacting, however, Baldwin urged the opposition to challenge the result in a peaceful manner.

“We also recognise that independent Nigerian voices have expressed concerns about the conduct of the electoral process, in particular logistics and results collation, and reports of intimidation of election officials,” she said.

“We urge any party or individual who wishes to challenge the process to do so peacefully and through the appropriate legal channel and we encourage Nigerian authorities to examine all allegations of wrongdoing carefully, and take the necessary action against individuals found responsible.

“My thoughts are also with the families and friends of those who lost their lives in election-related violence. No one should die in the exercise of their democratic rights. We will continue to support Nigeria and its civil society in drawing lessons from these elections and strengthening its democracy.”

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday released the final breakdown of Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) collected before Saturday’s presidential election.

A total of 72.8 million PVCs have been collected across the country as at February 11, with Lagos and Kano leading.
The INEC boss, Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this while speaking at the daily INEC briefing in Abuja.
The breakdown shows that Lagos State leads with 5.5 million (5,531389) PVCs collected. It is followed by Kano which has 4.7 million (4,696,747) PVCs collected.

Lagos and Kano are followed by Kaduna, Katsina and Rivers states respectively. Kaduna has 3.6 million (3,648,831) PVCs collected, Katsina has 3.2 million (3,187,988) PVCs collected while Rivers has 2.83 million PVCs collected.
The states with the least number of collected PVCs are Ebonyi (666,591), Bayelsa (769,509) and Kwara (1,149,969).
The total number of PVCs collected in each state also reflects the maximum number of votes that can be gotten in each state as only registered voters with PVCs are eligible to vote.

However, results from previous elections have shown that having higher registered voters or PVCs does not signify having more people actually voting especially as people can collect their PVCs but still refuse to vote.
The four states with the highest number of PVCs collected are also considered battleground states by political analysts in the upcoming general elections.

These four states are also controlled by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Apart from Governor Akinwumi Ambode of Lagos State, the governors of the other three (Kano, Kaduna and Katsina) are seeking re-election on the APC platform.
Katsina State is also the home state of President Muhammadu Buhari. It is also the state with the highest percentage of registered voters who collected their PVCs (98 per cent).

Regional Spread
In terms of Nigeria’s six-geopolitical zones, the North-west leads in the number of PVCs collected.


The North-west leads with 18.2 million collected PVCs, followed by the South-west with 12.8 million.
The North-central has 11.5 million while the South-south has 11.1 million.
The regions with the least number of collected PVCs are South-east and North-east with 8.5 million and 10.4 million respectively.
Although there were reported cases of fire incidents in some INEC offices in the South-east, it cannot be said to be the reason for the low number of collected PVCs in the region.
The general election is set to commence on Saturday, February 23, with presidential and National Assembly elections while the governorship and house of assembly elections will hold on March 9.

The Jigawa state chapter of People’s Redemption Party (PRP), has adopted President Muhammadu Buhari as its presidential candidate in the forthcoming general elections.

The PRP governorship candidate in the state, Ahmed Kaugama, made the disclosure in Dutse, saying his party was at home with the policies of President Buhari hence, his adoption by his party.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Buratai, on Wednesday gave officers and men of the Nigerian Army with doubtful loyalty to the Federal Government Friday deadline to resign from the service.

Buratai gave the ultimatum at an expanded weekly meeting with Principal Staff Officers (PSOs), General Officers Commanding (GOCs) and some field commanders at the army headquarters in Abuja.

He said, “the foundation of military professionalism is discipline and without discipline an army cannot stand.

“One of our core values is loyalty to constituted authority. Loyalty must be hundred per cent.

“Should any officer or soldier have doubts as to his loyalty to the Nigerian State as presently constituted, such a person has up to Feb. 22, 2019 to resign.

“There is no room for indiscipline or disobedience to lawful orders in the Nigeria army today.’’

Buratai also said that the expanded meeting was to review security strategies put in place for the Presidential and National Assembly elections on Saturday.

He recalled that two weeks ago, the strategies were planned in a similar meeting until the elections were rescheduled to Saturday and March 9, from Feb. 16 and March 2.

The army chief decried some politicians’ reaction to President Muhammadu Buhari directive to security agents to deal ruthlessly with ballot box- snatching.

“It is unfortunate to hear persons who are aspiring to rule this country again inciting the army to disobedience.

“We have consistently stated our position in the political dispensation to remain neutral and apolitical.

“However, direct and public incitement of the Nigerian military against democracy and constituted civil authority will not be tolerated.

“I request such persons to withdraw this inciting statement.

“Let me re-emphasize loud and clear, that the Nigerian Army is a professional army,’’ he stated.

He, therefore, ordered commanders to deal decisively with any electoral crime or action that could be inimical to national security.

Buratai further directed them to ensure that they and personnel under them did not hobnob with politicians.

“In this regard, there will be no military escort for any politician and all Nigerian army personnel are to stay clear of retired military officers, especially those who are now politicians until after the elections.

“Commanders are to conduct extensive patrols within their Area of Responsibilities (AORs).

“They must ensure that all flash points within the area are dominated.

“Commanders must, in conjunction with the Nigeria Police Force, enforce the restriction on movement within their Area of Responsibilities (AORs).

“All vehicles must be searched and suspicious persons or vehicles arrested/impounded and later handed over to the police,’’ he said.

According to Buratai, thuggery, snatching of ballot boxes, illegal possession of elections materials and similar crimes are intended to mar an election and create deliberate avenues for post-election violence and mayhem.

He said that such actions could also become more damaging when they are widespread, leading to destruction of lives and property.

Buratai noted that such incidents in past elections were often planned and orchestrated by politicians, but said that the army had hitherto been cautious in its approach.

“However, this time around the Nigerian army will adopt a proactive posture that ensures that similar incidents do not even arise.’’

He noted that Nigerians had generally expressed disappointment with the postponement of the elections, adding that it increased apprehension in the populace and international community.

He, however, assured that the army alongside other security agencies, would rise to the challenge of ensuring a peaceful outcome of the rescheduled elections.

Buratai said that there was need to give confidence to Nigerians and reassure the international community that all would go well in the electoral process.

He insisted that the unity of Nigeria was not negotiable, “hence those who seek to undermine its democracy by interfering in its electoral process must be seen as enemies and dealt with appropriately.

“Our role is aptly captured in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and we must defend Nigeria’s territorial integrity as well as act in aid of civil authority when called upon to do so.

“Therefore, commanders must work with all stakeholders, interest groups and agencies to avert any act by any individual, groups or entities that seek to undermine our democratic process.’’ (NAN)

The Taraba State government has reinstated Haruna Kawuwa who was sacked after his wife, Safiya, died during the APC presidential rally in Jalingo, two weeks ago.

Kawuwa was sacked by the state government few days after Safiya died alongside seven other persons during a stampede at the venue of the APC presidential rally.

The sack of Kawuwa, a senior local government staff, had attracted condemnation including from members of the ruling PDP in the state.

The letter reinstating him with reference no LGSC/SP/SAR/5/VOL1/335 dated 15th February was signed by the Permanent Secretary, Local Government Service Commission.


“His Excellency, the Executive Governor Darius Ishaku Dickson, has approved that your dismissal be waived. Consequently, you are by this letter recalled back into the service,” the letter read.

Kawuwa while reacting to the reversal of his dismissal by the state government said he thanked God for everything, pointing out that he knew justice would prevail because he did not commit any offence to warrant his dismissal

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Uyi Giwa Osagie, the lawyer and treasurer of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, for alleged money laundering.

Osagie was arrested on Monday following the arrest of Alhaji Abdullahi Usman, a notorious BDC owner based in Lagos, who was caught ferrying $2milion by air from Abuja to Lagos.

When the money was intercepted by EFCC, Usman, who owns Hasbunallahu BDC LTD, confessed that Uyi paid naira equivalent of $4million into his account. He converted it to $2million pieces and ferried to Lagos, and on arrival took it to Keystone Bank.

A source familiar with the matter said this was money Atiku was to use in settling all his party people ahead of the elections. After arresting Uyi, EFCC operatives searched his Ikoyi Reeve Road home and found documents linking him to Atiku. He was reportedly recalcitrant during the arrest, and is still in EFCC detention.

Also, presidency sources told SaharaReporters that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) postponed the election to allow Atiku get money from other sources.

EFCC spokeman Tony Orilade refused to confirm the arrest, telling SaharaReporters he could not make any statement on the issue until he had received clearance from the authorities.

The Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu on Tuesday warned politicians and other Nigerians that it is fully prepared to deal with anybody planning to snatch ballot boxes or make trouble during the forthcoming elections.

He gave the warning while briefing State House correspondents after security meeting Presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The meeting had reviewed security situation in the country, especially towards the general elections.

Adamu assured that the police is ready to protect every eligible Nigerian to exercise his or her civic responsibility.

Anybody that tries to disrupt the elections by engaging in ballot boxes snatching, he said, would have himself or herself to blame.

He also said that any act of thuggery and touting during the polls will be met with grave resistance.

He said, “Today, members of the security community and intelligence community came and briefed Mr. President on the security situation in the country.

“We deliberated on the consequences and came up with the resolve to further provide adequate security within the country so that the electorate will come out and cast their votes without any fear of molestation.

“Every Nigerian is encouraged to come out on the election day and cast his or her vote without any fear of molestation. The security personnel are ready and prepared to protect everybody.

“Anybody that feels that he can come out and disrupt process should have a rethink because that situation will not be allowed. If you plan and allow yourself to be used as touts, whatever happens to you, you will take it.

“Ballot snatching, ballot buying, thuggery will never be allowed, anybody that is planning to snatch ballot boxes or planning to be used as a tout, will have his or herself to blame on the Election Day. So you better don’t allow yourself to be used.” he said

representing Nasarawa South Senator Solomon Adokwe says that the last minute postponement of the general election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has “crippled” and rendered the party “broke”.

Senator Adokwe told journalists in Lafia that the Commission’s action was a calculated attempt to make sure that the opposition party has no funds to mobilise logistics to its members.

He said that there was pressure on the Commission by the ruling APC party to conduct multiple-day elections in the country.

Their plan, he said, was to use enough security agencies in an election intended to run over multiple days to pepetuate themselves in office, even though it is clear that Nigerians were going to reject them in a free and fair election.

Senator Adokwe, who accused the electoral body of bias against the PDP said “most states in Nigeria, including Nasarawa State, were earmarked to frustrate the process so that they have staggered election. I believe it is God that is working; now you have the whole week to prepare and address all the challenges, no excuses any more,” he said

Senator Adokwe accused the Commission of being partisan, saying that “the integrity and credibility of INEC to conduct free and fair elections is questionable.

“The APC are quick at saying it was done in the past. Even if you say Jonathan did it, the Commission under Jonathan gave two weeks notice, but this INEC gave just few hours notice when we have already used our little resource to mobilise logistics for the process.

He went on to add that, “They did that to frustrate PDP. It was a calculated attempt at making sure that PDP is broke since they can easily go back to Central Bank to get funds. It is an attempt to make sure we are crippled and broke, but they will be shocked at the resilience of PDP; we are going to bounce back right into their faces.”

Despite the frustration, Adokwe said that his supporters were fully prepared for the election, noting that the postponement would not deter them from troopping out next Saturday to cast their votes for him.

The candidate expressed disappointment over the action of the Commission, noting that since the advent of democracy in Nigeria, this was the first Commission to give a long period notice in preparation for an election.

“They released their timetable eight months ago and commenced the process immediately. Their actions have raised a lot of room for one not to trust them. You cannot look at a Commission that is speaking from both sides of the mouth and believe that they will do the right thing, ” he said.

Senator Adokwe is running for the fourth time to represent Nasarawa South, contesting against APC candidate and incumbent governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura.

Abia police arrest three INEC officials with 10,000 PVCs

POLICE operatives in Abia State have arrested three officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission for allegedly being in possession of over 10,000 Permanent Voter Cards.


It was gathered that one of the suspects, simply identified as Stella, was arrested at a checkpoint at INEC head office in Umuahia, the state capital.

Stella was said to have stuffed the PVCs in the booth of her Honda Accord saloon car with Registration No.AKD 953 FN.

It was gathered that the suspect was arrested while trying to move the PVCs illegally to a location where they were to be used to rig elections in favour of some politicians in the last Saturday’s postponed presidential and National Assembly elections.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Prof. Joseph Iroh, confirmed that the suspects were employees of INEC.

He said they were on an official assignment in Ikwuano Local Government Area before they were arrested.

Iroh added that the INEC office in the state was not contacted to properly clear them before they were taken to the police station to make statement.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr Geoffrey Ogbonna, also confirmed that the suspects were arrested by the police.


He said one of the suspects claimed that she was reportedly returning the uncollected PVCs to the INEC head office before she was arrested by the police.

Professor Okechukwu Ibeanu, INEC Logistics Committee Chairman need to explain why he couldn't do the only work assigned to him, which is to ensure that there is not logistic problem.

Retired Group Capt. John Ojikutu, a security expert, has said 60 per cent of INEC staff that superintended the past elections which were equally postponed might still be in the system.

“It is high time they were identified and weeded out of the system,” Ojikutu said in his reaction to the postponement of the general elections by INEC.

According to him, from 2011, 2015 and 2019, the reasons for rescheduling of elections had always been logistics.

He said, “It has always been logistics problems since I can remember way back in 2011 when Jega came on board. Has INEC learnt any lessons from the experiences of the past including the 2015 experiences?” he asked.

“There could still be no less than 60% of these in the systems; Who are those that were managing the INEC logistics in the past and how many of them are still in the process? Are there any intelligence about any from the experience of the past? What has INEC done to attend to these experiences?

The leftovers in the systems that were part of the experience of the past could still be the clogs in the process; why would INEC not identify them and remove them,” he asked.

KAJURU MASSACRE: CAN LIED, ELRUFAI RIGHT

Rev. Joseph Hayab, the Chairman of Kaduna State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), has denied that Fulanis were killed in Kajuru local government of Kaduna State. Governor Nasir ElRufai had led journalists and security men to the sites of the killings on Saturday 16th February, 2019. The killings took place the previous day.


Reacting to the controversy, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) described the denial of the massacre as condescending, shocking and inhuman. MURIC’s reaction was contained in a press statement issued late Sunday evening 17th February, 2019.


“We are shocked to our marrows that CAN chairman in Kaduna State had the temerity to deny this horrendous and criminal act. We are talking about 66 full-blooded human beings hacked down in their sleep, slaughtered and burnt. Survivors identified the attackers as Christian militia and here is the CAN chairman falsifying the barbaric massacre as if it never happened.


“We are really disappointed with the caliber of people posing as religious leaders. Peace will continue to elude us in this country as long as we refuse to admit the fact that there are criminal elements in our midst. Lasting peace can only be found if the law-abiding faithfuls in all creed collaborate, isolate criminal elements among them and hand them over to law enforcement agencies.


“22 women and 12 children were among those killed in cold blood. Their souls cry out for justice. MURIC has incontrovertible evidence of the massacre. This criminal act is being watered down for now in order to avoid escalation at this critical period of the 2019 general elections. But we have no doubt that both the perpetrators and those who provide cover for them will continue to live with the heavy burden on their criminal consciences until nemesis catches up with them.


“It is most shameful that a religious leader of this status will lie openly that the killing of 66 human beings never happened. The Nigerian Army in Kaduna confirmed the massacre as well as the number. Yet Rev. Hayab keeps denying. Religious leaders are respected for their righteousness but how righteous is a lying cleric?


“We have no doubt that the conscience of the chairman of Kaduna state branch of CAN will forever nag him. He will never be free for denying the truth. The Bible says, ‘You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free’ (John 8:32). Hayab will remain a slave of his nagging conscience until he confesses his sin.


The statement which was signed by the founder and director of the Islamic human rights organization, Professor Ishaq Akintola, also lamented the lukewarm attitude of the media to the massacre.


“The silence of the Nigerian press over this massacre is equally nauseating. It is most unprofessional. The Nigerian press has always been known to go agog when Christians are the victims but they will look the other way when Muslims are the victims. Can we say such a group seeks enduring peace?


“MURIC calls on the international community to rise to the occasion. In particular, we call the attention of foreign observers of this 2019 general elections to this gruesome act. This massacre cannot be isolated from the 2019 elections because it was perpetrated on its eve. Christian militiamen have committed a shocking atrocity under cover of darkness. The whole world should condemn this bestiality. This mass murder of innocent and vulnerable people was committed under the nose of foreign observers. It should form part of their concern. They should condemn it because we know what they would have done had Christians been the victims. We demand their reaction to it as they are still in Nigeria.


“We invite all men of conscience to speak up. The man dies in him who fails to condemn the merciless massacre of women and children in their sleep. The Nigerian civil society is yet to speak up 48 hours after the brutal killings. What does this mean?


“Are Fulanis not human beings? Is it because they are Muslims? Are Muslims not entitled to fundamental human rights? This is the tragedy of our society both locally and internationally. Hypocrisy is the order of the day. Everybody in the so-called civilized world and civil society is calling for peace but nobody is calling for justice. They have forgotten that justice is the soul of peace. Nobody can deny one and still enjoy the other.


“They accuse Muslims of terrorism but they are the worst terrorists. They forget that terrorism is mere smoke. Injustice, oppression, downpression, persecution and provocation are the real fire which cause the smoke. No good firefighter will turn his hose towards the smoke. Nay, his target must be the tongues of flame. We therefore assert clearly, categorically and unequivocally that those who accuse Muslims of terrorism got it wrong. They are treating the symptom while they leave the disease to spread.


“On a final note, we appeal to Muslims throughout Nigeria, particularly in Kaduna State, to remain calm and law-abiding. The aim of the attackers is to provoke retaliation so as to disrupt the electoral process. We therefore charge Muslim faithfuls to refrain from any violent reaction. On the other hand, we demand justice. We call on the security agencies to fish out the killers without delay. It is the failure of officials to apprehend culprits which often compel the aggrieved to resort to self-help. Justice delayed is justice denied”.
