The banana plantlets were obtained through a rather more complicated process compared to the traditional way of growing banana using suckers – these are the daughters growing at the base of the mother plant that farmers uproot from their own farms or buy from a neighbor. It is a slow method of obtaining planting material and it easily spreads pests and diseases from one farm to another if the suckers are not properly selected and treated. However this new technology, known as macro-propagation, aims at overcoming these two challenges – it allows the rapid production of pest-free planting material. http://iitanews..com.ng/2011/11/farmers-embrace-new-technologies-to-get.html?m=1 Kindly call 070 3231 3642 for your pest free plantain suckers |

Three ways of conserving soil water in plantain production Soil moisture needs to be conserve in order to limit the effect of dry season on plantains. Practices that conserve soil moisture are those that allow lots of water to enter the soil and prevent run off, allow the soil to store water and prevent water from been lost. These are: 1. Minimum tillage. Large machineries should be avoided as they compact the soil and prevent water from entering the soil and encourage runoff. The land should be systematically cleared to preserve the soil structure. This allows lots of water to infiltrate the soil. 3. Mulching. Covering the soil with dead plant materials conserves soil moisture in more ways than one. Firstly, it prevents rain drop from directly hitting the soil , secondly it prevents water from been lost through evaporation, and thirdly, when they decay, they produces organic matter with can store 5 times their weight of water. 3. Cover crops. Cover crops cover the soil and prevents water from been lost through evaporation. Water melon is an economic cover crop in plantain farms. |

Agriculture / 6 Facts About Plantain Farming Backed With Research by phyllosilicate(m): 10:42pm On Jul 09, 2017 |
1. Cheapest During The Dry Season. The price of plantain is very cheap form November to February and most expensive few months after the onset of rain, especially before new yams emerge. This is why experience farmers plant at the middle of the raining season so they would harvest when it's expensive. 2. Plantain Wants Some Air Planting plantains too close for example using 2m*2m spacing (1000 plants per acre) creates unhealthy competition. The plantains would grow too tall, making them susceptible to wind damage. Also they would take longer time to bear bunches that would be small. IITA recommends a spacing of 3m*2m that is 670 per acre. 3. They Prefer potassium to Nitrogen Unlike most crops, plantain consumes more potassium than Nitrogen. Their potassium requirements is twice that of their nitrogen. For this reason, fertilizer/manure applied most be very rich in potassium. 4. Plantain Love Mulch According to IITA, the yield of a plantain field that is mulched and not fertilized, is 50% higher than the one that is fertilized and not mulched. Also the yield of the field that is mulched and fertilized, is twice the one that is only fertilized but not mulched. So before you burn the land that you want to use to plant plantain, think twice. 5. The First 3 Months Are The Most Critical According to the African center for banana and plantain research, good growth in the first 3-4 months, guarantees high productivity. At this stage, the plant are fragile and requires tender care. The plants should be mulched, receive frequent rain and field weed free. This is why plantain must be planted at least 3 months before the end of raining season. 6. You Must Start Clean Pest and diseases enters the plantain farm through plantain suckers. The corms and roots of conventional plantain suckers contains the deadly plantain nematodes and beetles. According to biodiversity international, if as little as 1% of the suckers planted were infested with nematodes, the yield would reduce by 20% in the first year. And from the third year onward, the African center for banana and plantain research says all the plantains would start producing tiny bunches. This account for why majority of the plantains sold are very small. The most effective method of preventing and combating plantain parasites is the use of healthy planting materials such as tissue culture and macropropagated suckers. 3 Likes

What IITA and CARBAB say about macropropagated suckers: " Farmers usually depend on natural regeneration of plantain for the supply of planting materials. This is a very slow process that often produces small numbers of planting materials that are usually contaminated by various soil pathogens such as nematodes and shortens the lifetime of plantation to only one or two cycles of cultivation, beyond which lodging occurs. IITA has developed techniques for the rapid multiplication of healthy planting materials. " IITA Ibadan. "The cultivation of plantain is underexploited due to the inadequate provision of good quality propagation materials. The negative influence of parasites also leads to the use of poor quality suckers, resulting in growth cycle of only two years. The return on effort put in by farmers is therefore unsatisfactory, leading to further discouragement among plantain growers. Fortunately, a number of intensive production techniques have been developed, including in vitro cultivation, typically used in research centres and macropropagation using the plantlet from stem fragments." (African Centre for Banana and Plantain Research, Duala Cameron) The bitterness of poor quality is remembered long after the pleasure of low price have been forgotten- Thomas Ruskin

Application of improve agrotechnology is the fastest way of boosting agro productivity. According to FAO, at 1997 Nigeria plantain production was 1.7 million metric tons while that of Ghana was 1.8 million. By 2013, Ghana plantain production increased astronomically to 3.5 million metric tons per annum, Nigeria's production increased to a meagre 2.7 million. Ghana success is due to the embrace of improved production techniques such as the use of high yielding macropropagated suckers.
