Statement by the Latin Patriarchate in Jerusalem on the shooting and killing of two women in the Catholic church in Gaza.

A statement from the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, which oversees Catholic Churches across Cyprus, Jordan, Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank, reported Saturday that an IDF sniper “murdered two Christian women inside the Holy Family Parish in Gaza, where the majority of Christian families has taken refuge since the start of the war.”

How on earth will a sniper snip two innocent and unarmed women inside a church.

In an address on his 87th birthday, Pope Francis denounced as “terrorism” the Israeli Defense Forces killing of two “unarmed civilians” who were sheltering in a Catholic church in Gaza.

“I continue to receive very grave and painful news from Gaza,” Francis said. “Unarmed civilians are the objects of bombings and shootings. And this happened even inside the Holy Family parish complex, where there are no terrorists, but families, children, people who are sick or disabled, nuns.”

The Pope said the victims of the IDF attack were Nahida Khalil Anton and her daughter Samar Kamal Anton, who were killed while they were going to the bathroom.

“Some are saying, ‘This is terrorism and war,’” the Pope said. “Yes, it is war. It is terrorism.”

The Latin Patriarchate statement said the Israeli military gave no warning before the attack, and that the two “were shot in cold blood inside the premises of the Parish, where there are no belligerents.”

Former Michigan Representative Justin Amash, who was the first Palestinian-American to serve in Congress and whose relatives were killed by an Israeli airstrike in Gaza in October, responded to the news in a social media post on X, formerly Twitter.

“For Christians in Gaza—whose family members have been killed or maimed, whose homes and churches have been destroyed or badly damaged, and who suffer through sleepless nights of bombings—this Christmas will be one of great sadness and mourning,” Amash wrote. “Please pray for peace and reprieve from the IDF siege that is devastating this ancient community.”

In his address, the Pope also noted that earlier Saturday, an IDF tank struck the Convent of the Sisters of Mother Theresa in Gaza. The statement from the Latin Patriarchate said the attack destroyed the generator and fuel resources for the building, which currently houses over 54 disabled people.

The news comes just a day after IDF soldiers killed three hostages who were waving a white flag. The Israeli military has said the accidental killings violated its rules of engagement and is reviewing the actions of its soldiers.

As of Thursday, the Gaza Health Ministry reported that 18,787 people—including 7,729 children and 5,153 women—had been killed by Israel in Gaza since October 7.

“Let us pray for our brothers and sisters who are suffering from the war in Ukraine, in Palestine, in Israel, and in the other zones of conflict,” Francis said in his address. “May the drawing close of Christmas reinforce the commitment to open the paths to peace.”

I was going to let this go...but no..

The problem here is that you think I am excusing bad behaviour by women. No, I am not. I am quite conservative, even to the point that I believe that sleeping before marriage for both men and women, and even after is a no no.

What I am inveighing against is the bad behavior by most Nigerian men. Here you are, criticising women for misbehaving, and forgetting that men are also involved. It takes two to tango, you know.

The OP started his comment by saying that most Nigerian women sleep around. Now, I know that is an exaggeration...but I also know that women do sleep around as do men (it has been over the years a large part of my job to clean up after the mess they leave behind..including post abortal care...shudder.). I also know that a lot of women are often times pressurized into sleeping with men...for money, jobs, income, sometimes because the man in their life cannot control himself, and needs a real toy somehow. And when guys like the OP label women as sluts without talking about the role men play in the thing....it annoys me. I am a man, and I know from what I have seen that it isn't true.

If you want women to stop being sluts...you also have to call out the men who enable, and glorify the system that makes women be sluts. You ahve to call out men who actively seduce, force, encourage immorality. You just cannot call out the women only.

The sad thing is that women in this country are brought up to keep themselves for marriage, while it is the men who force them to break their resolve. We men need to man up and take responsibility...and stop forcing women against their will...just as women too should stop playing the temptation Jezebel game.

True, it takes two to tango. But when a man cheats and the cheating results in a child, his wife is 100% certain the child is not she's. So there is nothing like maternity fraud. But when a woman cheats and the cheating results to a child, the illegitimate child would be assumed to be her husband's. That is the difference.

I’m saying what if she really was a victim of circumstance considering the fact that it was written up there that she was drunk and pictures were taken(you will agree someone about getting married won’t allow another guy take nudes of her during sex if she was really cheating) and I’m not asking for the husband to take her back, because he’s definitely going through emotional turmoil also and might end up hating her. The All Progressives Congress candidate in the Kogi West senatorial district re-run election, Smart Adeyemi, has defeated Dino Melaye of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ijumu local government.
Both candidates are from the local government.
While Mr Adeyemi is an indigene of Iyara, Dino Melaye is from Aiyetoro, a neighbouring village.
The final result for the local government was announced on Sunday morning.
Mr Adeyemi’s APC polled a total of 11,627 votes while Mr Melaye’s PDP amassed 7,647 votes in the local government, according to the electoral commission, INEC. The candidate of the SDP, Natasha Akpoti, came a distant third with 49 votes.
Ijumu is part of Kogi West senatorial district, the district the candidates seek to represent in the Senate.

…Urges speedy resolution of issues

The International Monetary Fund has backed Nigeria’s closure of its borders with some neighbouring countries over issues bordering on illegal trade.

Mr Abebe Selassie, the Director of the African Department at the IMF, gave the position at a media briefing on the sidelines of the World Bank/IMF Annual Meetings in Washington D.C.



He was responding to a question on whether the closure negates the African Continental Free Trade Agreement, AfCFTA.

Selassie said although free trade was critical to the economic growth of the continent, it must be legal and in line with agreements.

“On the border closure in Nigeria which has been impacting Benin and Niger, our understanding is that the action reflects concerns about smuggling that has been taking place.

“It is about illegal trade, which is not what you want to facilitate,’’ Selassie said.

He said the IMF was hoping for a speedy resolution of the issues as the action was already taking a toll on the economies of the country’s neighbours.

“We are very hopeful that discussions will resolve the challenges that this illegal trade is posing.

“If the border closure is to be sustained for a long time, it will definitely have an impact on Benin and Niger which, of course, rely quite extensively on the big brother next door,’’ he said.



On Wednesday, the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, said the borders were closed to curb illegal trading activities by Nigeria’s neighbours.

It's scary to hear of the speedy growth of religious intolerance in Nigeria's South-South region.
This is wrong.

Everyone has the freedom to practice whatever religion they choose to.

But in order not to further fuel the islamization conspiracy theory currently spreading in the South, I'd advice Muslims in these areas not to build mosques.
Because Mosques do not fit in in these regions.

They can just pray in their homes.

If President Muhammadu Buhari goes by the recommendation of the National Judicial Council (NJC), Walter Onnoghen, the chief justice of Nigeria (CJN) could get retirement benefits in cash and kind up to N2.5 billion, checks by TheCable have revealed.

As part of the package for a retired chief justice, a house will be built for him in Abuja with a nine-digit sum for furnishing — in addition to a severance gratuity that is 300% of his annual basic salary of N3,363,972.50, as well as pension for life.

Just like state governors, a retired chief justice is entitled to a number of domestic staff and sundry allowances for personal upkeep.

This package for judicial officers was put together by the NJC long before Onnoghen became the CJN in 2017.

However, if he is dismissed, he will not be entitled to any benefits.

TheCable reported on Wednesday that the NJC has recommended the embattled CJN for compulsory retirement after deliberating on a petition by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) which alleges “financial impropriety, infidelity to the constitution and other economic and financial crimes related laws”.

Onnoghen, who denies all allegations, is also undergoing trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) over charges of false asset declaration.

TheCable understands that members of the NJC were not convinced by his defence but also decided that he should be offered a “soft landing” through retirement.

This option may also include withdrawing criminal charges against him.

“The major problem Onnoghen’s defence had was that even though he claimed those funds found in his accounts were his, he could not provide evidence on how he made the money,” a source in the know of the deliberations told TheCable.

“He provided evidence of source of income from one investment but that went nowhere near the $200,000 per annum deposits in his account. Unfortunately, there is a supreme court judgement that says where your assets exceed your income, the burden of proof is on you, not on the prosecution.

“It also did not help Onnoghen that he never touched his salary account for so many years. He said he was living off the proceeds from his farms, but he did not provide a single proof to back this up.

“Also, money paid into his account by senior lawyers is completely unethical. You can say they do not amount to much, but you cannot justify such impunity. It was a very difficult case to make.”

NOT THAT EASY

Presidency sources, however, told TheCable that the option of “soft landing” will be difficult to justify “given the anti-corruption efforts of President Buhari”.

TheCable learnt that before the scandal blew into the open, Onnoghen was given the option of early voluntary retirement.

“Under this arrangement, he would have kept all the monies found in his accounts and received all his benefits from the system, but he chose to fight till the very end,” the source said.

“The implication now is that the criminal charges may go on, his assets will be frozen and will most likely be forfeited to the federal government after his trial and he will be banned from holding public office for at least 10 years.”

Onnoghen has closed his defence at the CCT and the tribunal is expected to give its judgment at the next sitting on April 15.

But for the crisis, Onnoghen, who is 68, was due for retirement in 2020.

The breakdown of the results from Diso ward, Gwale local government, indicated that Gabduje of APC got 172 votes, while Yusuf of PDP polled 90 votes.
