Water treatment (Reverse Osmosis) and Filtration

Reverse Osmosis (RO) membranes are key components in water purification systems, designed to filter and remove impurities from water. The RO process works by forcing water through a semi-permeable membrane under pressure, allowing only water molecules to pass while blocking contaminants such as salts, chemicals, and microorganisms.

How RO membranes work and their importance:
1. Semi-Permeable Membrane
The membrane used in RO systems is semi-permeable, meaning it allows water molecules to pass but blocks larger molecules like dissolved salts, organic compounds, and bacteria. It’s a thin film made from materials like polyamide or cellulose acetate.
2. High-Pressure Operation
Reverse osmosis requires water to be pushed through the membrane using high pressure, typically supplied by a pump. This pressure overcomes the natural osmotic pressure, which would otherwise push water from a lower concentration of solutes to a higher one.
3. Rejection Rate
RO membranes have high rejection rates for contaminants, often removing 90–99% of dissolved solids, metals, and other impurities. The effectiveness depends on factors like water temperature, pressure, and the condition of the membrane.
