Riliwanu Balogan was found hanged in his cell at Glen Parva Young Offenders' Centre the day after his 21st birthday and was resuscitated. But he died at Leicester Royal Infirmary eight days later on May 16, 2011.

Young offenders' centre senior officer Paul Mayfield told the inquest Mr Balogan had been detained on immigration issues and was awaiting deportation back to Africa.

Mr Mayfield said: "He told me he had nothing to live for.
"He said, 'I'll be deported back to Nigeria. I've got no-one back there. I'll be living in the slums'."
Mr Mayfield said Mr Balogan had been transferred to Leicester from HMP Woodhill, Milton Keynes, after becoming infatuated with a female prison officer.
He had a history of using a ligature while in prison, using his socks to tie around his neck on January 15.

He said Mr Balogan had mental health problems and had been moved to a "safe cell" as he had been classed as a suicide risk.
Psychiatric nurse Alison Wilford said she had been called to deal with a superficial cut on Mr Balogan's neck on May 7.
She said: "He was quite willing to speak to me, talking about his 21st birthday and the prospect of his deportation, almost giving a list of his problems."

She said the cut, a small nick with a razor blade, was not serious and she did not regard it as a suicide attempt.
Dr John Grenville, who carried out a review of the death, told the inquest: "Even under continuous supervision his chance of carrying out suicide would have remained high.

"In my opinion, the healthcare teams recognised that Mr Balogan was a vulnerable man and affected him with what help and support they could."
A pathologist's report gave the cause of Mr Balogan's death as a hypoxic brain injury and bronchial pneumonia.
Coroner Martin Gotheridge said Mr Balogan had been brought to England when he was seven.

He was abandoned in London and spent time either in foster care or children's homes.
"He was not a British citizen and not legally in this country. His solicitor told him that all means of appeal against his deportation had been exhausted.

"It was even more daunting to him to be sent to Nigeria where he did not know anyone – his mother was dead, his father was living in another country in Africa and he had no contact with any siblings.
"It is not surprising that he saw no hope."

Mr Gotheridge expressed sympathy to the members of HM Prison Service involved with Mr Balogan.
He said: "It can be very disturbing for them, even if they are at no way at fault."

The grandparents placed her butt in boiling water to punish her for her continuous bed-wetting.
The stepmother of the little girl, Madam Christiana Torkono allegedly forced her to sit on boiling water.
Her grandfather James Agbamavo, made matters worse by going to purchase indelible ink to apply on the bruised buttocks and left her in a room for days until police rescued her yesterday, Tuesday.
Joy News Anna Agyepong visited the young girl at the Police Hospital where she laid pain but is said to be responding to treatment.
Public Relations Officer of the hospital, ASP Juliana Obeng says doctors are working around the clock to ensure she recovers fast.

Nigerian man, Tony Rholand (pictured below on the left) was stabbed to death by his South African wife, Lungi, at their home in Willims town, Cape Town, South Africa on Tuesday January 1st.

The couple, who have a kid together, had an argument in the early hours of January 1st and before anyone could stop it, Lungi stabbed Tony severally in the stomach. Tony died in the hospital a few hours later. Lungi has been arrested.

Actress Biola Ige has pointed an accusing finger at controversial actress, Tonto Dike, as being responsible for sickness which could not be treated in Nigeria but she was flown to India for "Spiritual Help".

For Tonto Dike, 2012 was a year of one controversy to the other and from all indications it seems she’s not ready take a break this year.
Few days after she got a sarcastic open letter from one Onyeka Nwelue, Tonto is the news again. The issue of her alleged “involvement with the devil” has been brought to the fore again.
After actress Biola Ige’s sickness defiled orthodox medical treatment in Nigeria she was flown to India for ‘spiritual help’. But what many did not know is that accusing fingers was pointed at Tonto Dike’s direction. Rumours have it that something happened that caused Biola and Tonto to be at loggerheads.
However, Biola said she finds it hard to believe that Tonto would ever want to hurt her. Here is what she told a report with regards to the issues:
“I was a Hinduist before I travelled to India. I was a Christian before I changed my faith and I must tell you I have found peace in Hinduism.
And in India, I felt at home. I didn’t feel like returning to Nigeria again because everyone was so nice to me. A 28-year-old photography student from Nigeria allegedly committed suicide after jumping off the second floor of his rented accommodation in Sector 41. Police said preliminary probe suggests that the deceased, Kelvin Lakoju, was in depression.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Embassy and the deceased's family have been informed about the incident.

Kelvin had been living in Noida since 2009 and was pursuing a photography course from an institute in Film City.
Cops said he jumped off around 11pm on Wednesday, January 2nd. "We have questioned some people and came to know that he was upset for some reasons," said deputy SP, S Chinappa.

"His friends said Kelvin was good at studies. Some personal problem could be the reason for committing suicide," said a senior police officer. An FIR has been lodged with Sector 39 police station.

Nigerian-born Collins Nweke, was on Friday sworn in as Councillor of West- Flanders Constituency in Belgium.

Nweke, a member of the Belgian Green Party, was re-elected last year having made history in 2006 when he became the first non-Belgian born politician to win an elective position in West-Flanders.

With his re-election, Nweke's mandate includes issues bordering on the economy, social policy, international development and minority priority.

"The last several years were a learning curve where some important results were equally achieved.

" I will continue to have my eyes on the ball as far as social policy is concerned, but with an expanded portfolio that includes the economy and international development.

"Small and medium enterprises are the engine of the local economy and a business-friendly environment will not only keep existing businesses in good shape but will attract new investments and create jobs.

"A number of good initiatives are ongoing and obviously these would be continued and enhanced. "It will also make sense to re-evaluate some economic activities that are liabilities to the local economy," He told News Agency of Nigeria,NAN, Western Europe Correspondent.


Nweke, who spoke on international development, said the challenges of global meltdown were insurmountable. "I think that the relationship between the western economies and the emerging ones has for too long being based on the wrong premise. He said that partnership, rather than charity, should be the bedspring on which the larger part of the relationship rests.

"The economies of the west are showing signs of saturation, while there are huge developmental potential in the emerging economies. So let's build a relationship of mutual benefits." Nweke, 46, years,from Ibusa in Delta state, migrated to Belgium in 1993; he is currently the Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora in Belgium.

Barely a week after the Kogi State Governor, Captain Idris Wada, was involved in a road accident that claimed the life of his Aide-de-Camp, the convoy of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Lawal Jimoh, was involved in another ghastly motor accident, which killed a police escort instantly.

Jimoh was travelling to his home town in Okene, according to reports, when a heavy duty truck ran into his escort van at Osara, along Okene road.

The Speaker’s vehicle, was however not affected in the accident, but a police corporal Lamidi Akeem, who was in the affected vehicle, gave up the ghost at a hospital on Thursday.

Austin Akubo, the Speaker’s Chief Press Secretary, confirmed the incident and emphasised that Jimoh’s car was not affected in the crash.

Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli appears to have been involved in a training ground bust-up with manager Roberto Mancini.
A picture agency has released photographs it says were taken on Thursday morning of the pair having to be separated by staff and team-mates at Carrington training ground.

City have declined to comment.
Mancini is expected to answer questions about the incident at his news conference on Friday morning.

“It’s believed Mancini reacted to a challenge from Balotelli on one of his team-mates,” said BBC radio 5 live senior football reporter Ian Dennis.

“In one of the photos Mancini is seen to be pulling at Balotelli’s orange bib, and in another photo Balotelli is being restrained.

“I’m led to believe the incident blew over very quickly and with that in mind the photos do need to be put into some sort of context because super-fast frames can show the spat but don’t necessarily provide a true reflection of any time period.



“However, it doesn’t reflect well on the champions, it ensures Balotelli will create headlines yet again, and Mancini will be quizzed about his relationship with the player at tomorrow’s press conference.”

The pictures appear to show Mancini shouting and gesticulating towards Balotelli, who has scored three goals in 21 appearances this season.

A 19-year-old woman(Savannah Ramirez) accidentally shot dead her brother while posing with a gun for Facebook photos on New Year’s Eve.
Manuel Ortiz died instantly after being shot in the head at about 6am on Monday morning.

Family and friends wept as his body was carried from his apartment in Phoenix, Arizona, where the shooting took place.
Police said 22-year-old Ortiz and his sister Savannah Ramirez arrived back at the home they shared on New Year’s Eve after spending the night drinking.

They were with two other people when someone in the group pulled out the handgun to take photos with it.
As the 19-year-old posed and played around with the weapon it went off striking Ortiz in the head, according to ABC15.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is not known if the group knew the handgun was loaded.
Police say she has been questioned and released pending further investigation in the case.

Phoenix Police Sgt Steve Martos said the victim’s sister would likely be charged with manslaughter if tests conclude she had alcohol in her system.
‘Every New Year’s Eve, this particular sister is going to be thinking about this for the rest of her life on how…drinking overnight, playing with a gun and now shoots and kills her brother,’ said Phoenix Police Sgt Steve Martos.

Friends said the shooting was a terrible accident.

One friend who wanted to remain anonymous said she wanted to remember Ortiz as a ‘kind, funny guy he was’.
‘He was a very close friend to everybody. He was just always there and it’s sad because one second he’s here and the other he’s not.’
‘Every time he saw somebody sad or down he would be right there making jokes so you could be happy. Even if he was just having a hard time he was always there for someone,’ said the friend.

Authorities are looking into who owns the gun.
On both Manuel and his sister’s Facebook pages there are numerous shots of them posing with guns and making gang symbols.

Samuel, the teenage son of Pastor Owulo Obu, has drowned at Lekki Beach, Lagos Nigeria, where he and others went for the New Year revelry.

P.M.NEWS learnt that while church members at Latter House of God Church located at 26/27 Guinness Street, Pero bus stop, Agege, Lagos, were preparing for their new year carnival, 17-year old Samuel in company of a female member of his father’s church, Comfort Adikpe, 30, her boyfriend, Busayo and her younger brother, Godwin, went to the beach to enjoy themselves.

P.M.NEWS gathered that before Samuel went to the beach on Sunday, he approached his mother to give him transport money. But when she delayed, he went into his mother’s bedroom and picked a N1,000 note for his journey.

Comfort confirmed that Samuel drowned at the beach when he and her brother, Godwin, went to play in the Atlantic sea waves.


“When the wave swept him away, we begged the divers to rescue Samuel and after some efforts they retreated when the wave was about sweeping them away also.”
She added that Pastor Obu was informed on phone that his son had been swept away by the wave while the matter was later reported at the police station at about 7.35 p.m on Sunday.

She said she was detained till the following morning when she was released.

Comfort, a recharge card seller who hails from Benue State, north-central Nigeria, added that Samuel and Godwin were drummers at Latter House of God founded by Samuel’s father.

At the pastor’s residence yesterday, the mother of the late Samuel was still in shock when P.M.NEWS called. All she could manage to say was, “we are still confused about what happened to my first child.”
