A 44 year old house agent, Arogundade Gbenga, popularly known as Baba Ibeji, has been stabbed to death by a colleague during a verbal confrontation, over N1,000 house rent inspection fee in the Federal Capital Territory.

SaharaReporters gathered that the incident happened on Friday around 10am at Byazhin Across, Kubwa in the Bwari Local Government Area of the Territory.

The deceased allegedly slapped another agent identified as Ogbuabo Chibugo who has chemist in the area. The man who was reportedly provoked, brought out a knife and stabbed Gbenga to death.

"There was an issue of inspection fee which is N1,000 between Baba Ibeji and another agent, an Ebira man, who has a chemist in the area. The man got provoked after Baba Ibeji slapped him, He brought out a knife and stabbed Baba Ibeji to death.

"The victim was rushed to Kubwa General Hospital where the doctors on duty confirmed him dead. His corpse has been deposited in the same hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

"The suspect later ran away to avoid been attacked by aggrieved residents, the source said.

A security source told SaharaReporters that the suspect was later arrested by police in someone's house where he had gone to hide after the incident.

"The police have succeeded in arresting the suspect where he went to hide immediately after the incident. Police also took the wife away from the area," the source added.

However, Josephine Adeh, the FCT police spokesperson, who confirmed the incident to SaharaReporters on Monday, said an investigation has commenced into the incident.

"The suspect has been arrested and detained. The case will be transferred to SCID for the investigation," She said.

Nigeria currently faces numerous challenges, including economic struggles, declining standard of living, unemployment, and insecurity. These issues threaten the nation's unity and development.

"However, the Tinubu's administration is determined to tackle these challenges head-on to ensure a united, secure, and prosperous Nigeria," the Speaker, House of Representatives, Dr Tajudeen Abbas, who represented the president at the occasion said.

"We are the giant of Africa and must remain so," he said.

“Based on this, the present government remains resolute in its mandate to create better living conditions for Nigerians and to do this, it has begun taking several steps,” the president added.

As a responsible government, the president said, they were able to identify the crux of the nation’s problems, which were centred on some fundamental issues.

“As a government, we are working hard to confront these problems, including associated ones, to make our beloved nation more secure and improve the quality of life of the Nigerian citizen.

“We need the cooperation of all Nigerians for better answers in our interest,” he said.

He, however, called on the Nigerian Armed Forces to develop a comprehensive policy to support families of fallen soldiers.

He emphasised the need to alleviate the suffering of widows and children who have lost loved ones in service to the nation. This directive aims to address the challenges faced by these families and provide them with necessary support.

Tinubu also acknowledged Nigeria's complex history since gaining independence, marked by periods of turbulence and prosperity. However, he expressed determination to unite the country, ensuring no one is left behind.

"The Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) plays a crucial role in this endeavour, as it trains officer cadets for the Armed Forces.

“The nation requires loyalty, commitment, dedication, resilience and service from you.

”Be aware that wherever and whenever the nation comes calling, you will answer,” he said.

The price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) popularly known as petrol has hit N2000 per litre in Akwa Ibom as petroleum marketers down tools over alleged confiscation of their trucks loaded by Joint Task Force officials.

Before the strike, petrol was readily available though at a cost of N1400 per litre in most filling stations across the state. Still, the price was different in the black market following the prolonged fuel scarcity.

According to the strike notice by the Akwa Ibom State branch of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), members have been directed to close their filling stations from Tuesday, September 24, until further notice.

In a letter signed by Francis Udoyen, chairman of the association and Ekom Idemudo, the secretary, the dispute arose following the confiscation of association members’ trucks by the Joint Task Force personnel. The trucks have been in the custody of the JTF officials for months now.

“As part of our collective obligation to stand for each other in season and off-season, equally drawing strength from the resolution taken at our emergency congress over members’ trucks in the custody of the JTF operatives (four months now), you are directed to your filling stations from the public as follows, date of commencement, September 24, 2024, till further notice,’ the letter read.

IPMAN noted that the action has the approval of its national office adding that non-compliance would be viewed with appropriate consequences. The trucks were seized in Ibaka, Mbo local government area of the state.

The petrol price hike has resulted in the corresponding increase in transport fares within the state capital and this has also affected the price of basic food items, according to a check.

It was gathered that the petroleum marketers were asked to go to court if they felt that they were wrongly accused of abetting product smuggling.

Sam Osung, a former official of IPMAN said the marketers should have gone to court instead of trying to bully the JTF officials to release, adding that engaging the services of petroleum tanker drivers not to deliver their products to Akwa Ibom state was not the best thing to do.

“The marketers are trying to bully the JTF to release their trucks without proving their innocence,’’ he said in a statement.

He accused the marketers of illegally stopping tankers from supply products to Akwa Ibom state which he said has brought about the panic sales by IPMAN and the resultant hike in the price of petrol.

In a broadcast to mark the 37th anniversary of Akwa Ibom state, Governor Umo Eno warned marketers against settling petrol above the approved price saying the state government would not fold its arms and watch as unscrupulous elements take over the petroleum marketing sector.

“Let me warn those selling petrol above the approved price that the government will not tolerate such unpatriotic actions. We will soon set u[ a task force to ensure that those engaging in this practice are brought to book,’’ he said.

IBADAN—THE National Leader of the Yoruba Self-Determination Movement, Professor Banji Akintoye, yesterday, intensified his call for separation from Nigeria asking South West governors and monarchs in the region to declare September 23 as Yoruba unity day.

He, however, alleged that suspected Fulani bandits have killed no fewer than 29,000 Yoruba people and continue to rape women and subject others to all sorts of atrocities.

He said this in a statement to mark the anniversary of Yoruba Unity Day.

Akintoye, a renowned historian, emphasized that given the continued threats to life and destruction of farmlands, the only option left is to separate Yoruba Nation from Nigeria.

He said: “The only viable and sustainable answer to all this horrible situation is to separate our Yoruba nation from Nigeria, and to establish our own country where we shall be able to exercise our sovereignty to provide security for our land and people, and where we shall be able to run our economy decently in the way that we Yoruba know.”

Claiming that the Yoruba unity day was being celebrated in Ile Ife and Ibadan, he said: “In the rural areas of our homeland, where probably the majority of our people live, the Fulani people who are determined to seize land for a homeland of their own, are daily killing our people, have killed a roughly estimated 29,000 of our people, are raping our women, kidnapping men, women and children, extorting millions of Naira in ransom for the kidnapped, destroying farms, food barns and villages.”

Calling on the South West governors and traditional rulers to adopt the unity day as a public holiday, Akintoye said: “Obas, the fathers of our nation, should adopt this Yoruba unity day in their Councils of Obas in all our Yoruba States. I urge that our Governors, when they assemble in their Southwest Governors meeting, to adopt this Yoruba unity day for all our states.”

While asking other Yoruba people to join him in his self-determination struggle, he stated: “We are seriously pushing for the separation of our Yoruba nation from Nigeria and the Nigerian disaster is different. Our perception of the Nigerian situation is not self-centred. It is not emotional. It is intellectually sound and realistic. And it is accepted by at least 80 per cent of all our Yoruba at home and in the Diaspora. Objectively, there is good reason to fear now that the Nigerian situation could destroy our Yoruba nation.”

On the creation of the security outfit, Amotekun, he said: “There was some hope when our Governors created Amotekun some years ago to resist the Fulani rampages, but Fulani people in control of the Federal Government have contrived the impotence of Amotekun. The Fulani terrorists are also becoming increasingly audacious in crimes and barbarism in our main cities.

Our kinsman who won election as President of Nigeria is being made to face ever-mounting harassment, including threats of military overthrow, threats of wholesale regional rebellion, and even a defiant declaration of war.”
