Politics / Re: Electricity Consumers To Pay More In New NERC Regulation by pokipoki: 2:19pm On Mar 20, 2018
nwakibie3:
…Nigeria targets 100,000mw by 2030 –ECN

Isaac Anumihe with agency report

As consumers grapple with high electricity bills across the states, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) yesterday, introduced a new policy that may worsen their plight.

The latest regulation which came into effect on March 8, 2018 and will be enforced by the Commission from April 3, 2018, is aimed at providing standard rules to “encourage the development of independent and competitive meter services, eliminate estimated billing practices, attract private investment to the provision of metering services in NESI, and close the metering gap through accelerated meter roll out to enhance revenue in NES.

According to NERC’s Commissioner, Legal, Licensing and Compliance, Dafe Akpeneye, prepaid meters will soon flood the market with the licensing of 87 meter asset providers (MAPs).But those who will get the new meters under the new regulation will have to pay more.

Akpeneye who spoke with newsmen in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, said MAPs will be independent providers who will be approved by NERC but contracted by the DisCos to bridge the metering gap.

“They are to be saddled with the responsibility of providing meters and replacing faulty devices within 48 hours,” he said.

In Section 10 (5) of the new law, which contains the new provision, an analysis of the Meter Asset Provider Regulations 2018 (Regulation No NERC-R-112) shows that those who benefit under the new system will pay a monthly service charge. Under chapter IV, section 10 (“Rights of Distribution Licensees”), subsection 5, the regulation states: “The Distribution Licensees shall include a metering service charge as a clear item on the billing of its customers provided with meters under an MSA with MAPs and shall be separate from the energy charge. The metering service charge shall be based on the outcome of the procurement process for the MAP and subject to the approval of the Commission.”

Meanwhile, the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), has predicted a growth of up to 100,000 megawatts electricity generation in the country by 2030.

ECN’s Director-General, Professor Eli Bala, disclosed this in an interview with the newsmen in Abuja.

Bala said that the projection would be possible with an annual economic growth rate of 7 per cent and steady implementation of the national energy plan by the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing.

“With the incremental power programme, every time, every year, we must have increment in power generation.

“We will also increase our capacity to transmit as well as the capacity to distribute.

“So I think we are on course, although it is not easy.

“Very soon, we will get to a level where we will have a 100,000 megawatt or 100 gigawatt by 2030 and the economy growing at the rate of about 7 per cent annually,” he said.

MORNDEW:
Is there anything we Crucified GEJ for, that has not Happened in this Administration?
This was an article I saw on front page this morning https://www.nairaland.com/4405472/there-anything-crucified-gej-hasnt. As usual, the comments showed the lack of intelligence and the childish nature of the average politics section nairalander. Let me not write long epistles but below are things we Crucified GEJ for, that has not Happened in this Administration

1. Immigration Job Scam: The last administration wasted the lives of over 19 graduates and injured hundreds in a nonexistent immigration Job after collecting #1000 application fee from the applicant. The culprit in that she of shame Abba Moro, was left untouched.

2. Depleted Foreign Reserve: My friends, may our lives not be depleted the way the former administration depleted our foreign reserve. The administration of the ineffectual buffoon inherited $47.7 but depleted and squandered it to about $29 before leaving office. This came at a time when oil price was high.

3. Seized Aircraft carrying military weapons: In a show of shame and national disgrace, an aircraft belonging to a man who goes pastor Ayo Oritsejafor and loaded with military weapons was seized by SouthAfrican Authorities because it was illegally used in acquiring military weapons. Reporters agreed that the said aircraft had former militant leader Asari Dokubo on board. Where in the world do military weapons get acquired using a former rebel and the aircraft of a funny looking man of God? Only in the last administration.

4. Upsurge of Boko Haram: The former administration of the Kindergarten president saw the upsurge of Boko Haram. The terrorists, seized and controlled territories in Nigeria almost the size of Belgium. The terrorists grew from strength to strength. Institutions were easily bombed. UN building, Thisday building, St. Theresa Catholic Church etc. Abuja the Federal capital territory was not spared. Today BH has been decimated and confined to a hideout with pockets of attacks.

5. Borrowing to pay salaries: in continuation of the show of shame of the former administration, The former administration was borrowing to pay salaries at a time of many. A serious government borrow to develop infrastructure not to pay salaries.

6. Arrest of Opposition leaders before Elections. The kindergarten former administration made it a habit to arrest opposition leaders before elections. A day to the election in Osun State, opposition leaders like Lai Mohammed were arrested and detained till after the election. El-Rufai was arrested and detained in Anambra on the day of the governorship election. Same thing with Ekiti state election where arm banded military men were used to rig election.

7. Stealing is not corruption: The former accidental public servant, on a live media chat said stealing was not corruption. The body language and utterances of the former president upsurged corrupt practices and made it look like a culture.

8. Crass Crude First Lady: The former weak President had no control of the wife, who made mockery of her role as the wife of the president. A woman who threw decorum to the gutters and behaved like 17th century cave women. She went ahead to impose candidates and even acted like the president of the country as was observed by former President Olusegun Obasanjo in his book.

9. Release of Chibok girls: girls were kidnapped in Chibok and a president who went to dance later could not release them until this administration. It took this administration tactics and experience to release the girls the former administration could not.

You see, one thing is to criticize this present administration for its short coming on different national issues but trying to compare this administration with the last amounts to insult on intelligent Nigerians. The last administration was a disaster. Given the circumstances and same scenario before 2015 presidential election, reverse that same election Nigerians would still elect president Buhari.

Nairaland has lost all forms of credibility by allowing illiterates to roam here polluting this place with their illiteracy hence it now looks like every Nigerian is that way. Stupid unintelligent comments now get likes and the illiterates are urged on by those likes to make more damaging comments that looks like it's the right thing.

one thing is to come here and show your shallowness and another thing is to face facts and reality. That you get likes from nonsense does not make it normal. People come here to disgrace their families and themselves and think it's the right thing.

Forgive me for missed punctuations and mistakes cos I just took time from my busy schedule to write this and set the records straight. And to also show that there are people on this forum who don't easily forget.

Crime / Re: 12 Things You Probably Don't Know About Pablo Escobar by pokipoki: 5:41pm On Mar 13, 2018
DrRasheed:
Pablo is one of the best drug lords the world will ever
know. He transformed the meaning of the drug lord and
change everything about the world of narcotics. He is the
true example of power and chaos all in one. With the best
backup plans he knew how to get what he always wanted.
He had money more than the government and the
country. He had the power more than the president of the
country.
All the forces of all the countries combined searching for
Pablo and still were unable to achieve their goal. He was
also known as the king of cocaine. He was considered as
one of the most dangerous people on earth at that time.
He is also known as the wealthiest criminal in the history.
Even now the criminals look up to him, he is also known
as the pioneer of organized crime. He was 10 richest man
with an estimated amount of $30b
Pablo
Escobar achieved quite a lot in his 44 years. Much of it
chronicled in Netflix's hard-hitting series Narcos .
With the first season now on DVD and Blu-ray we've
assembled some facts about the famed drug lord to help
uncover the man behind the myth.

Pablo Escobar got rich of the cocaine trade.
Stupid rich.
At the height of his powers, Pablo’s Medellín drug cartel
was considered to be in control of 80 per cent of the
cocaine that was shipped to the US and worth something in
the region of $25billion. At the height of their powers, the
cartel was smuggling around 15 tonnes of cocaine per
day. In 1989, Forbes listed him as the 7th richest man in the
world with a personal worth of over $3 billion.
The Godfather and other nicknames
He had many nicknames one that he was most known for
was The King of Cocaine however during his life he had
many other names including: Don Pablo, El Doctor (The
Doctor), El Mágico (The Magician), El Padrino (The
Godfather), El Patrón (The Boss), El Señor (The Lord), El Zar
de la Cocaína, (The Tsar of Cocaine)
He had so much money he used to spend
$2,500 a month on rubber bands to hold his
cash.
According to Pablo’s accountant and brother Robert, such
was the amount of cash held by the Medellín drug cartel,
that there were spending something in the region of $2,500
a month on rubber bands to wrap it all. Just get some cling
film, surely?

He’s still regarded as something of a Robin
Hood figure in his hometown
Born the son of a farmer in Colombia’s second city
Medellin, Pablo often talked of the poverty gap that was all
too apparent in Colombia. Pablo used a portion of his
wealth on developing real estate in his hometown, building
barrios, parks, football stadiums, hospitals and churches in
the area. To some, he was regarded as a working class hero
come good, saving the poor while government officials did
nothing.

He was responsible for over 4,000 deaths
Those that didn’t take the silver option however, were often
killed as Pablo made his bloody rise to the top of the drug
trade. In total, the Medellin drug cartel was said to be
responsible for approximately 4,000 deaths including rival
drug lords, government officials and civilians. Make nothing
of the myth, Pablo Escobar was a bad man.
He had so much money he lost millions
annually to rats nibbling this money.
With the majority of the Medellín money held in storage in
various warehouses, a good percentage of Pablo’s ill gotten
gains had to be written off due to “spoilage”. Be it water
damage or rats nibbling at his $100 bills, Pablo Escobar
wrote off more cash than most people earn in their
lifetimes.

He buried his treasure like a pirate
Due to the amount of cash that was coming in per day,
around $60m at the peak of his career, they had to hide the
money somewhere. One idea was to use plastic oil drums
so that the money could be buried. There were reports in
2012 that a Colombian farmer found over six hundred
million stashed away in one of these drums. Anyone up for
a trip to Colombia with a metal detector?
He once burned $2 million to keep his
daughter warm
Sensing a theme here? Pablo Escobar’s life is once
characterised by great violence funding great wealth. In
1991 Pablo was on the run after escaping from luxury prison
La Catedral. Staying in a farmhouse in the hills of Medellín,
Pablo’s daughter soon fell ill with pneumonia, so in order to
keep her warm he used nearly $2 million as kindle for fire.
He even built his own prison
By 1991, Pablo had gained one too many enemies and was
under threat of being extradited from Colombia to the
United States. Making a deal with the Colombian
government, the kingpin had a custom luxury prison built –
La Catedral, which he agreed to served a maximum of five
years in rather than face American justice. So Pablo built
his own prison, and then filled it full of luxuries including a
football pitch, a waterfall and a telescope that allowed him
to look directly into his daughter’s house when he was on
the phone to her. Oh, he walked out on La Catedral after a
year. By using a back door.
He was a cut throat negotiator
Pablo started his trafficking character in 1975 and fast
gained a reputation for his no nonsense negotiating style.
Those who would oppose him were often asked “plata o
plomo” – “silver or lead”, offering the option of bribery or
facing death. Many government officials chose the silver
option.

Still questions on who took the fatal shot
On 2nd December 1993, Escobar was shot in a gun fight.
He suffered shots to the leg and torso during the fight
between him and his bodyguard and the Colombian Police.
Who made the fatal shot to his head is still unknown. Some
say that it was the police but his brothers speculated that
he committed suicide as they said that if he was ever
cornered he would shoot himself between the ears.

His funeral was chaos
Over 25,000 people came to pay their respects to Escobar
as a lot of people saw him as a hero. Douglas Farah, from
the Washington Post and another writer from the Los
Angeles Times were covering the funeral but were attacked
as they were American as some blamed the press for his
death and portrayal in America.

The question you need to ask now is why is this case been delayed up till now when the government claimed it had vital evidence to prosecute the case? The simple answer is that corruptìon is still very much prevalent
