Politics / The 9th Senate: Full List Of Newly Elected Senators by PoliticsNigeria: 3:25pm On Mar 01, 2019
@POLITICSNGR

Facts have emerged that about 64 serving senators and 151 members of the House of Representatives will not be returning to the National Assembly in June when the 9th Assembly will be inaugurated.

According to the results of the elections released so far by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), only 45 senators and about 209 members will be returning to the federal legislature.

Meanwhile, fifteen of the newly elected senators are former state governors while forty-two of the 64 non-returning senators could not get their party’s’ ticket in October last year at their respective primaries. The remaining 22 lost at the Saturday’s National Assembly elections.

From the list released so far by the electoral body, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has 64 senators-elect so far, while the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has only 41. Another political party, the Young Progressives Party (YPP) has one senator-elect.

With 106 senators returned so far, there are three more seats yet to be concluded from Plateau, Kogi and Imo states.

Recall that in 2015, 79 Senators couldn’t return to the red chamber. But the 64 is an improvement .

From the 42 senators that lost out during the primaries, few of them did not contest for reelection, while many of them went into the contest but lost.

For the House of Representatives, ‎the number of non-returning lawmakers represents 41.9 percent of the 360-member chamber. However, the number is expected to rise as election results from some constituencies are yet to be declared.

However, the results released so far showed that the APC got over 200‎ members so far in the House, while the PDP has a little over 100.

The big suprises
Senate President Bukola Saraki was among big wig who lost to Ibrahim Yahaya Oloriegbe of the APC. He has been in the Senate since 2011.

Former Senate minority leader, Godswill Akpabio also lost his return bid when he was defeated by Christopher Ekpenyong of PDP.

Also, former Benue governor, George Akume, who has been at the Senate since 2007, lost to a serving member of the House of Reps, Emmanuel Yisa Orker-Jev.‎

Senate Minority Leader, Biodun Olujimi also lost to former PDP Publicity Secretary, Dayo Adeyeye of the APC.

Meanwhile, two governors Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo state and Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo of Gombe state contested to come to the Senate but lost.

The 9th Senate
From the results released so far, APC has just a simple majority of 64 senators, 3 better than the 61 overall senators it got in 2015.

Though APC has a comfortable majority, it still lacks the two-thirds majority, which is 73 senators to pass major legislation.

As a result, PDP has 39 senators against the 48 it got in 2015, while YPP has one.

Moreover, 46 senators got reelected this time, only 30 senators won in 2015, while 79 senators lost their return bid in 2015.

Despite a resounding victory in the just concluded presidential elections, the battles within the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, seem far from over as the Party's National Working Committee, NWC, has suspended Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha and Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun.

PoliticsNGR learned that both politicians have also be recommended for expulsion from the party. This development was announced on Friday afternoon in Abuja after an NWC meeting.

Okorocha and Amosun won senatorial seats in last Saturday's National assembly elections.

The suspension is coming shortly after both governors were accused of 'Anti-Party' activities following their support for Gubernatorial candidates from different parties.

Below is a statement from Nigeria's Ministry of Information sent to PoliticsNGR;

"The attention of the Honourable Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has been drawn to a report that he (Minister) voted manually at his Polling Unit 006 in Oro, Irepodun LG in Kwara South, after the card reader failed to authenticate him.

This report is patently false and is apparently sponsored by those who are on the verge of losing their political hegemony in Kwara State.

The correct report is that the Minister proceeded to cast his vote after his voter's card was duly authenticated by the card reader, his fingerprints captured and his name and picture identified in the voters' register."

Politics / Buhari Speaks On Plot To Islamize Nigeria by PoliticsNigeria: 12:17pm On Feb 22, 2019
@POLITICSNGR

PoliticsNGR has been furnished with a statement from the Nigerian presidency signed by Spokesman, Femi Adesina, containing President Muhammadu Buhari's reaction to reports of a plot by his government to Islamize Nigeria.

The President described the reports as 'False and Wicked', adding that he remains committed to Freedom of Religion in the country. The Statement read;

"It has come to the notice of President Muhammadu Buhari, ahead of the forthcoming elections, that some unscrupulous Nigerians are again falsely and wickedly claiming that the administration has an agenda to impose Islam on Nigeria.

The objective is clearly to stoke up religious division for political gains. Some of these same persons made these devious and fabricated claims ahead of the 2015 election. They failed woefully.

The President strongly affirms the oath he took before the Nigerian people to faithfully defend the Constitution of Nigeria. That Constitution guarantees freedom of worship for every Nigerian. It is this guarantee that enables all Nigerians to practise their faiths or religion without hindrance.

President Buhari further affirms his commitment to freedom of religion and worship for all Nigerians, and that under no circumstance will any religion or faith be imposed on any Nigerian.

It is dangerous, deceptive and ungodly to play politics with religion."

Politics / PDP Reacts To Arrest Of Senator Rafiu Ibrahim by PoliticsNigeria: 11:51am On Feb 22, 2019
@POLITICSNGR

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has reacted to the arrest of one of its Senators, Rafiu Ibrahim on allegations of murder. Below is a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Kola Ologbodiyan;

"The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) demands the immediate and unconditional release of our Kwara South Senatorial candidate, Senator Rufai Ibrahim and other members of the party framed-up, arrested and detained by the Police in Kwara state.

The PDP holds that the continued detention of Senator Ibrahim on the eve of a crucial election, in which he is a lead contender, is completely provocative.

The party also cautions the police to stop harassing, arresting and detaining its members on flimsy charges, as such will directly pitch security agents against the people in a manner that might spark off violent resistance with regrettable consequences.

This resort to police brutality by the APC is a script by a losing team which seeks to introduce violence and use the police to execute their rigging plots.

Nigerians will recall our vehement protest against the deployment of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s lackey, CP Kayode Egbetokun, as Kwara state Commissioner of Police, wherein we alerted of plots by the APC to use him to incite the people, cause pandemonium and pave the way for outright rigging in favour of President Buhari and all other candidates on the platform of APC.

However, PDP, in clear terms cautions the APC and their compromised security agents that nobody has the monopoly of show of strength. Our members in Kwara or any other state, for that matter, are law-abiding but will never allow themselves to be subjugated by anybody, particularly in this critical electoral process.

In this regard, our members should immediately activate their individual and collective defence mechanisms by using every legitimate means available, to resist the aggression of the APC and their compromised security agents as well as dismantle their rigging machineries.

We know that the plan of the APC is to stop our members from accessing their polling centres. Our members should deploy all legitimate means, including lawful self-preservation strategies and tactical manoeuvres to beat the aggressions, arrive at their respective polling centres and exercise their voting rights accordingly.

The PDP, therefore, calls on the Inspector General of Police to immediately call CP Kayode Egbetokun to order. We also call on lovers of democracy all over the world to rise in condemnation of this wicked harassment and arrest of our members ahead of a crucial election."

Politics / 12 Presidential Candidates Endorse Buhari [FULL LIST] by PoliticsNigeria: 5:39pm On Feb 21, 2019
@POLITICSNGR

There is compelling need for historians and economists to document the 16 years squander-mania and mismanagement by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), so that future generations would not repeat the same mistakes, President Muhammadu Buhari has said.

The President spoke at State House, Abuja, Thursday, while receiving members of the Forum of Presidential Candidates & Political Parties for Good Governance, who decided to subordinate their ambitions, and have directed their supporters to vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate.

"I am overwhelmed by your patriotism. The least you could do was to deny me votes in your immediate constituencies. However much your people loved me, they would have voted for their own first. I am really overwhelmed by your support," President Buhari said.

The President told his guests he was glad that Nigerians understood the three fundamentals on which the administration was anchored namely; securing the country, reviving the economy, and fighting corruption.

He listed many achievements in the three focal areas, and declared: "We lost unimaginable revenue in the 16 years of mismanagement of the country by the previous PDP administrations. Look at the state of roads, rail, power, and infrastructure generally, as at 2015, when we came into office. The roads were not done, neither were they even maintained. The number of lives and property lost on Lagos/Ibadan Expressway on a daily basis, for instance, was very sad and tragic. And many other roads like that in the country. If the various administrations had fixed infrastructure, Nigerians would have simply minded their businesses. They wouldn't bother about who even governs them. But the mismanagement was unparalleled. Our historians and economists should help document it, so that future generations would take note, and not repeat the mistakes."

President Buhari said after contesting four times, "before God agreed with me in 2015, I had a clear plan of what I wanted to do, and people are now seeing the progress we are making."

Chairman of the Forum, Shitu Mohammed Kabir, MON, of Advanced Peoples Democratic Alliance (APDA), said they decided to throw in their lots with President Buhari because of advances made in security, economy, fighting corruption, infrastructural development, agricultural revolution, and many others.

According to Kabir, "Nigerian political landscape is taking a new dimension...As a group of political parties committed to the realization of a new Nigeria, we identify with these laudable feats of the President, which are in proximity with ours, as exemplified in our manifestoes. We, therefore, wish to support President Buhari's candidacy in the coming election, and direct all our teeming members across the length and breadth of Nigeria to go out in their numbers, to vote for APC candidates, Muhammadu Buhari/Yemi Osinbajo, in the coming election."

Other members of the Forum that acquiesced to the endorsement include: Hon Edozie Madu, Independent Democrats; Danjuma Mohammed, Movement for Restoration & Defence of Democracy; Yusuf Nadabo Dantalle, Allied Peoples Movement; Ahmed Buhari, Save Nigeria Party; and Alhaji Isah B. Dansarki, Mass Movement of Nigeria.

Yet others include: Ikechukwu Nwaokafor, Advance Congress of Democrats; Alista Soyode, Yes Party; Barrister Charles Ogbali, Advanced Nigeria Democratic Party; Kenneth Ibe Kalu, United Peoples Congress; Comrade Isiyaka Paul Femili, Nigeria Element Progressive Party; and Robinson Akpu, National Democratic Liberty Party.

Politics / We Are Not Tapping Telephone Lines Of Nigerian Citizens - DSS by PoliticsNigeria: 11:40am On Feb 21, 2019
@POLITICSNGR

The Department of State Security Services, DSS has denied reports that it is tapping the telephone lines of certain Nigerians. In a statement sent to PoliticsNGR signed by its spokesperson, Mr Peter Afunanya, the security agency, described the reports as false.

The Statement read;

"The Department of State Services wishes to inform the public that it does not tap or eavesdrop on private conversations of citizens and residents and therefore denies the allegation by a political group to this effect.

Recently, the Agency has come under the focus of uninformed critics and unpatriotic commentators most of who feed the public with fake news and hate speeches against it. Social media is awash with wrong information of sorts regarding the Agency whose operations and activities are highly misunderstood and misrepresented.

It is obvious that some merchants of violence are determined to use their platforms to misinform the public for their selfish and political ends. In this regard, the Service warns that those bent on entrenching this mischief should be aware of the consequences of their misleading action as the law will surely catch up with them.

The DSS is a responsible organization and thus professionally adheres to the ideals of intelligence and security governance expected of it in a democracy. The public is, therefore, urged to disregard the claims of the political group.

The Service prefers that it is left out of the political fray as it wishes to maintain its usual transparency and neutrality in the discharge of its mandate. It enjoins all carriers of fake news and social media manipulators, who are deceiving the populace, to always THINK NIGERIA."

Politics / JUST IN: Presidency 'exposes' Protectors Of Ballot Box Snatchers by PoliticsNigeria: 3:29pm On Feb 19, 2019
@POLITICSNGR

The Presidency has reiterated President Muhammadu Buhari's comment that anyone who dares to snatch ballot boxes during next weekend's elections will be doing this for the last time, saying it should be seen as a strong message against the long history of savagery associated with elections in the country.

Speaking to State House Correspondents on Monday, presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu, recalled some past elections in parts of Nigeria, during which innocent voters lost their lives while ballot boxes were being snatched by armed thugs.

"Snatching ballot boxes often entails putting the lives of innocent Nigerians at risk. About 10 years ago, evidence was brought before an election tribunal from one of the states in North Central of the gruesome killing of 26 prospective voters by ballot box snatchers. Their modus operandi is well known. They storm election venues in commando style, overwhelm the law-enforcement agents and seize ballot boxes leaving a trail of death and injury,” Shehu said.

According to him, "Anyone who dares to put the lives of innocent citizens at risk in their desperation to rig elections, must be prepared for the possibility of losing their own lives because our security agents will certainly not stand by, clap for them and watch them kill and maim."

He added that President Buhari had the safety and security of Nigerians uppermost in mind when he made the comment, and should be praised rather than criticised for issuing this stern warning to potential ballot box snatchers.

Shehu further expressed concern about those attacking the president's comment, and their worry over the fate of anyone caught snatching ballot boxes.

"This sounds like members of the opposition, specifically the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP who have perfected plans to rig the elections and to snatch ballot boxes. They can tell that President Buhari is not prepared to tolerate their antics this time around, and they are afraid. They have shown their intent,” he said.

The presidential spokesperson noted that no one had anything to fear from the President's comments if their conscience and intentions are clear.

"Let's just have free and fair elections and no one need worry about anything," he said.

Politics / DSS Withdraws Invitation To Okechukwu Ibeanu, INEC National Commissioner by PoliticsNigeria: 1:32pm On Feb 19, 2019
@POLITICSNGR

The Department of State Security Services, DSS has withdrawn its invitation to the National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in charge of logistics, Okechukwu Ibeanu.

It was earlier reported that Ibeanu alongside Chidi Nwafor, the director of ICT; Ken Ukeagu, director of procurement; Osaze Uzzi, director of voter education and publicity; and Bimbo Oladunjoye, the assistant director of ICT were asked to report at DSS offices in Abuja by 2 pm on Tuesday.

It's unclear why the agency would drop DSS its decision but sources hinted that some prominent Nigerians intervened because of the “timing”.

This invitation was initially believed to be related to the fiasco that led to the postponement of the general election by one week.

Mahmood Yakubu, a professor and INEC chairman, had blamed the postponement on sabotage and logistical issues.

The statement, made available to PoliticsNGR, also debunked a rumour that the former DG of the agency, Lawan Daura has been moved to covert operations.

The statement read;

"The attention of the Department of State Services (DSS) has been drawn to a publication on (pointblanknews.com) titled, Elections 2019: Presidency Threatens to Sack DG SSS; Sacked Daura Now in Covert Operations.

The Service wishes to state that the report and all the latest insinuations/claims from your stable are false, mischievous and maliciously designed to bring the Service to disrepute.

A Federal High Court sitting in Awka, Anambra State, has disqualified Margery Chuba-Okadigbo as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the Anambra North Senatorial District.

Information made available to PoliticsNGR reveals that at the hearing on Tuesday, presiding Justice I. B. Gafai, announced Mr Onubogu Nelson as the legitimate candidate.

Barr. Tochukwu Nweke, Counsel to Onubogu had argued that Okadigbo was wrongly nominated by the APC because she did not contest the election.

PoliticsNGR has gotten another angle of a trending video showing the National Leader of the All progressives Congress throwing the APC flag angrily during the Presidential Campaign Rally in Ogun State today.

The Party's rally in Ogun State didn't go very well as it was marred with violence and clashes. This is due to the ongoing feud between the governor of the state, Ibikunle Amosun and the leadership of the party over the emergence of Dapo Abiodun as the Guber flagbearer of the party in the state.

The Vice President also refused to address the crowd.

Politics / 2019: Osinbajo Reveals What Will Happen To Nigeria If PDP Returns To Power by PoliticsNigeria: 3:29pm On Feb 11, 2019
@POLITICSNGR

Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo on Sunday said Nigeria cannot afford to allow looters and corrupt elements to return to power, urging electorates to vote massively on February 16 for consolidation of the rebuilding process being championed by the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Speaking during a courtesy visit to the Oloja of Epe, Oba Kamorudeen Animashaun as part of the next level engagement to the ancient town, Osinbajo said Nigerians should not be deceived by the very people who looted the country dry and now seeking to return to power.

He said several initiatives being implemented by the All Progressives Congress (APC) government to create jobs such as N-Power, TraderMoni and Markey Money, among others, as well as provision of critical infrastructure were prevented in the past due to corruption, and that it was important to let Nigerians know that the forthcoming polls should be about voting for continuation of the dividends of democracy.

According to him, “At the next level government, aside from all these initiatives, we also want to establish Entrepreneur Bank and Peoples Money Bank to complement the Bank of Industry. What we have realized is that we need to create several avenues for people to access funds to set up their businesses, and thereby create opportunities for more jobs. Already, we are in partnership with the Africa Development Bank (AFDB) to invest $500 million in creating jobs.

“All these things out to have been done before now, but corruption has prevented us from enjoying these things. We are at a point that we need to tell ourselves the truth because the country ought to have moved far ahead of where we are. If the leaders are corrupt, there is nothing that can move. It is not as if there is no idea to move this country forward. As a matter of fact, there are several ideas but corruption has refused to allow these ideas to come into fruition.

“Take for example, the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway; it did not take them three years when it was constructed but for 16 years, the PDP government could not fix it and they were budgeting money for the road every year. The APC government is now doing it with the right funding, the same thing with several rail projects across the country.“

While commending Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for the massive infrastructural renewal embarked upon by his administration in the Epe division, the Vice President assured that serious attention would be given to remaining roads connecting Lagos to Ogun State to facilitate ease of movement and boost commerce.

“I have to thank our Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode who has shown a pattern of serious hard work. I have been here a couple of times with the Governor to see the infrastructural renewal ongoing here and I have to thank God for helping him to achieve this much for Epe.

“There is nothing we see here that is not good. Every of his project here is good and commendable,” Osinbajo said.

Also speaking, Governor Ambode, who embarked on door-to-door campaign with the VP in Epe, urged residents to troop out on election day and vote massively for all APC candidates.

“You know where my heart is. For me, it is four plus four. So, on February 16, it shall be APC all the way from Presidency to Senate and House of Representatives.

“Whatever you want to do because of me, just know that it is APC all the way from top to bottom,” Governor Ambode said.
