Giving the cost won't add any value due to devaluation/inflation and the fact that I designed the system for my need. I am not into solar energy business, just an enthusiast. Below are the main ingredients used for the system.
- Victron Energy Inverter
- BYD B-BOX 13.8KWH 48V Lithium Ion battery.
- 300W LG solar panels
- Victron Energy charge controller
There is a generator, only as backup for the "rainy days".

The system handles everything in the house, including inverter ACs, but energy management is critical with solar system. I use only 6W LED bulbs, freezer programmed to go off at night, etc. Occasional use of water heater and zero use of electric iron. Use of water pump and washing machine during the day only (about twice a week max).

The most important item you need to focus on is the design of a system that will serve your NEED. Please do not spend a kobo without having in your hands a good design that you understand; to get into the design phase, you must conduct an energy audit. Do not buy those systems being sold with claims on capacity and the load they can carry. A bad experience may scar you and chase you away from solar energy.
Energy audit will show you what you currently consume, and enable you trim down your requirements. Solar energy can be expensive if you don't control your use!
With an energy audit, you have the foundation laid out and will know what capacity you want to design for. And you can play around the components based on affordability and other factors, there are many inverters, panels, and batteries out there. Don't do cheap, you will get whatever you pay for.
I never liked lead acid batteries, whether sealed or wet; while wet is better, it's maintenance can be an issue and may not last 3 to 5 years depending on the source. You should not discharge lead acid batteries below 50% so they don't start failing.
Li-ion batteries are expensive but basically worry-free and will allow you discharge down to 10% of battery capacity (90% DoD). They also last longest!

Just wanted to share a high level summary of the basics, there's a well crafted and concise submission on setting out with solar system at Kobocity. You should go read it.

Whatever you do, don't commit funds into it until you understand what you want to achieve. It is an investment and should be treated as one, also make sure to work with someone that has good referees.

Best of luck.

Thanks for sharing this. I got value!

I’m always ashamed to share my energy cost on a public forum. Since November 2020 till date, I’ve only bought N6,000 credit. I’ve relied 100% on renewable energy.

Abi make I share my meter number to check if this is true? grin grin
A transformer that I installed for an event center got only N11k bill pere in the first month of use during the handover stage.
There are at least 16 3hp ACs in the building and about 20 2HP. I did 60 x 60 energy saving lights in the hall. I think I have over 60 pcs installed.

Renewable energy can be expensive if you don’t control its use.
Another important thing is the selection of your household equipment.

Let’s deal with specifics now.

I’m sure if I share ghetto now. We will still be talking about the definition of ghetto in naija context.

I refused to tag along because you guys seems to bring up “the glass house/glass shops part” into the context.

Just do me a favour and show me exactly where I said glass house or glass shop. I asked the other guy too.

Does the drawing below look like a glass house or glass shop? Read the post, check the drawings and all the images I’ve attached so far.

I think this discussion is not for those with fixed mindsets.

MNSE guru asked if glass shops where cement are sold can be built in Ikorodu round about.... grin grin

I shared picture of an old shop that was converted into a modern shop with glass facade.

If I share the address or the pictures of the house which many people here know, I’ve exposed the owners to a huge security risk.

As for architects recommendation, I can only recommend Advanced Baba Lati Design Studio (we handle all our designs in-house).

I don’t draw. I conceptualize designs and check drawings and interface between clients and my extremely rigid professionals who always feel like they knew all the client need.

95% of our proposed designs get built.

Can you situate a Studio, 1 bedroom and 2 bedroom apartment within a hexagonal design?

The expected foot print of each is:

Studio 325sq feet
1 bedroom 550 sq feet and
2 bedroom 625 sq feet

The hexagon has an area of 1200 sq feet and there are 6nos of them arranged around a center core.

Hint;
Each hexagon can take a combination of any of the units.

325 + 695 = 1,020
2 x 550 = 1,100.
325 x 2 + 550 = 1200

.This is actually an international building innovation challenge

I've been using the dry cells for a while and the 2 to 3 years service life is a myth. The best I've gotten is a year and some months.
I figured I could safely get 3 years for the wet cell if they are claiming it can last 5 years.
Perhaps some battery brands may last better than others.

The battery life also depends on other factors mainly charging voltage and discharge cycle

Yes sir. It doesn't really make sense to me. If you drain the battery before allowing it to recharge, it won't last.
To enjoy it, it should be used to 50% capacity. That means I have to buy 2 times more batteries if I want to use the maximum capacity of my batteries at half the usage.
Good thing is that I'm conscious of energy requirements of appliances now and go for very low ones so that I barely use the battery much. Only one bar removes from the battery indicator by the following morning out of 5 bars and it starts charging slowly as early as past 7 am.
There are timers for freezer also. I bought one but the guy is yet to fix it but with the timer, I can set the freezer to work during sunny period of the day. Say 10 am to 3 pm.
I heard there is even DC iron now and I'm searching for one. Iron with low wattage.

This industry is big enough for us all to fly without touching each other.

But as proffessionals, if we see statement here that isn't generally true and misleading, we make our observations known without need for anyone to agree on not.
