Last season, English premier league, I loved the goal keeper of Bournemouth because of his abilities to catch headings... He was just amazing

@Op , in addition to what others may have said, a typical corner or free-kick is contended by many players seeking to nod it, it is often difficult for the keeper to figure out who will eventually get the header, creating a lot of uncertainty as to the direction, potential scorer and even his positioning.

GO PLAY SCORE MATCH GAME. YOU'LL PREFER TO FACE 10 PENALTY KICKS THAN 2 HEADERS FROM MATSUMOTO. THE HEADERS FROM HAMMERS HAS 97% CONVERSATION RATE, THE OTHER 3 % ARE OFF TARGET

I have also thought about it until I figured the answer in physics.

2 reasons:

1 - The law of inertial: whatever that is set in motion, stays in motion except the force of acceleration is applied to it to give the object more momentum.

When the ball is already in motion from the cross, it's in motion already and so nodding it gives it more acceleration to a new direction of a low/higher trajectory.

Even the best of all keepers can NEVER be in two places at a time because that's the only way to figure out the direction and catch the ball (but what about the new momentum), Still not possible even if two keepers are in that post.

This is why John Terry is still well respected for nodding out that ball against Barca.

2 - Speed calculation: A keeper always calculate/estimate the intensity of speed a ball travels for him to decide to either catch or punch the ball away. This is why many keepers are good at catching and parrying straight shots aimed at the post. But when you nod a ball, the keeper lacks the capacity to calculate the speed of how it started and to what direction it's headed.

This is also the reason wingers attackers like Messi, Ronaldo, Sallah etc scores some thrilling goals with shot from the wing side. The keeper often lacks the ability to calculate because the ball creates a curved motion instead of straight line.

Against Man utd and not Barca. The Moscow finals of 2008.

its common sense. the keeper dont have a clue where the ball is going even the player that head the ball dont know where the ball is heading

And relatively closer to the keeper, meaning a much shorter time for the keeper to react.
you just gave the perfect answer and everyone is here speaking grammar

Ur explanation make sense..

And most headers come very close to the gk.
And to conclude it, the direction of the ball can't be predicted....

Well, as a legendary striker i can tell you that it's because headers are the most difficult goals to score likewise!

Re: Why Are Headed Goals More Difficult To Save In Football? by ciro11(m): 5:47pm On Mar 22, 2021
Because the direction of headed balls are more difficult to predict because of closeness to goal post and the players positioning.
Re: Why Are Headed Goals More Difficult To Save In Football? by Ademola121(m): 5:48pm On Mar 22, 2021
They are hard to save because they are actually deflections from where the ball was heading to originally
Re: Why Are Headed Goals More Difficult To Save In Football? by uunwanaobong3: 6:07pm On Mar 22, 2021
Human head is round in shape WHILE human foot is some how flat in shape............ When the ROUND head tourches a ROUND leather ball at any speed, it is difficult for anyone including the keeper to predict the magnitude and direction of the ball as it can accelerate in any directions due to ROUNDNESS of both striking surfaces.

As for an almost flat human leg, it is somehow easy to predict the direction of the ball, as the contact surface comprise of both flat and round surface. The strike ball will always chose to follow the directiƶn which the object was originally projected without any change in direction due to flatness of one surface.

It is just the simple law of physics

This is a myth that has been peddled around over time. Ok let's see it this way; which one is easier to save; a header from just outside the 18 yard box or a shot from the same distance, both going the same direction?

Since most headers occur in set pieces, there's so much to calculate all at once: who will head the ball? What speed? What direction? Will he smash it against the ground? Thus the confusing reaction from most keepers. And That's even if the keeper has a clear line of sight since the goal area is often herded with players during set pieces.
