It's exactly 5 months now since I birthed this business. Exactly November 14th I started a business passion in the BEAUTY market.

On this day my barbershop was birthed... But we have barely operated for upto a month with hitches here and there.

First it starts with the non availability of professional barbers to run the business, all the barbers are either not interested or cannot give it their 100% when they get the job.

Many are frustrated with the poor patronage which is expected of any business or according to an article I read, they are "jealous" of their employer (still trying to figure this out).

My barbershop gulped me a whooping N1m.

All efforts via advertisement and physical search have proved barren as no barber has the patience to work or they are either no longer interested in a skill they learnt (instead have decided to rock the high-way(Yahoo)).

Well all said and done I want persons to know this and learn a lesson off my experience. Never invest in a business you have no skill (training) about.

As the Rent still counts, I continue to be hopeful because I invested premium ideas and hopeful I will get a patient barber to run my business while I attend to other stuffs.
I have good contracts with provision for accomodation for my employees but it's still difficult to get one

You need to rack ur brain..google the secrets and tips of the worlds most lucrative and successful barbers.. and learn from them.

Not knowing the biz before starting does not mean you cant learn.

Then you have no problem as you can change the model

Yes I can increase patronage for my shop.
On valentines day, we did a free haircut package.
The turnout was good.
I was very positive we would start seeing some of those customers again because we got very good remarks after that only for the barber to suddenly quit claiming his parents were sick knowing fully well the pains and struggles one has to go through to find another barber

My point in all of this is, only invest in a business you are skilled on

So I believe you can get people easily for this

Considering it's a new set up and we don't not know what we are capable of generating monthly, I decided to pay them monthly for a start until the shop can fend properly for itself then we can talk commission basis.

That being said, the difficult part is having a barber who will stand by the business through all weathers.

People are not ready to do this...except by some supernatural means in Nigeria

Any good guy will look for some ways to profit more

It's always difficult for young startups because of issues of staff availability.

Many young businesses have loads of vacancies but no one is applying

Bruh if the shop is well furnished .... I'm sure males won't mind coming to your shop to get haircut .... Even some men's like going to unisex shop to get their haircut , just because they are looking for females to knack ... Bruh ... All you need is a professional , contented, funny barber and hairdresser .... That's all you need .... Benin is too far, or else I would have take this offer

Like I said it's my personal opinion.
I am more of a shy type I be live so you can understand.
My partner is a pro hair dresser, actually she attend to dreadlocks clients in the shop. She comes in if her services are needed.

Does the location of the shop have a lot of pedestrian traffic eg Is it located near a major bustop or junction?

Are there lots of other barbers that are smaller and cheaper?

One other thing you need to bear in mind is that customer for barbing shops tend to be sensitive to price therefore if you set up a high class barber shop in a high density and start charging N1K per haircut you won't get many customers because most people would prefer to go where they can get a haircut for 400Naira of less

No professional barber will stay with your model. You need to give them ownership of the business. Negotiate 60/40 after monthly expenses
Get a secretary to check mate
Watch them work with passion
They will even birth new ideas for you.

So of our top management staff no longer accept salaries, they need profit sharing and strong sense of ownership.

Don't give up on the business... The error you made was starting the business when you haven't acquired the skill on it. But the success of your business doesnt soely depend on it.

Don't give up yet on searching for a person. I tell you, there is a person out there who is willing to do that job no matter what. Just keep searching carefully. Also Have people recommend people for you. I know good people are difficult to find but dont give up on the search.

Also, PRAY. Never underestimate the power of prayers. Just keep on praying without ceasing. You don't need to be a prayer warriot but keep speaking life to your business and you'll be amazed.

Also observe the area, don't scare potential customers away with expensive price rate. Keep it a little low for a start until you gain their trust.

Lastly, treat your employees well. Also motivate them on a regular basis. It is natural for humans not to be serious with things that don't belong to them, but if you constantly use the phrase "Na our thing", and make them understand that it's everybody's business you will see drastic change. Make sure you are not the boss.
