Good day professionals. I have a 9yr old son who I think will fare well in either computer programming, software developer, software & hardware engineer or so.

I am just a regular computer user who have zero knowledge on the aforementioned prospects. Pls, someone should tell me where to start from. I am more inclined to the software/hardware prospects

Is his age too small?
Do we have specialised learning centres that I can enrol him?

Thanks in advance

Good tutors are had to find because most people don't really know how to code. Find someone who can EXPOSE him to the world of computer programming.

What he need at his age is exposure. It will improve the way he thinks.

If later in life he fancy programming, he can then go for it.

Note: Do not force programming on him else he will not be successful at it.
Forget what people say that "everyone should learn how to code". Computer programming is not for everyone....the stress in it is no joke.

("There is no rest for the wicked"->he has to be someone that love reading alot because things are getting updated everyday n he has to keep up with it).
You need to love it in other to to be able to withstand the the waves that comes with it.

Just buying him computer accessories at home will not increase his love for programming. He can even starts using it for the wrong reasons (gaming, music's videos etc).

In summary, get someone to teach him the basics just to expose him and enhanced his problem solving skills which will help him later in life (computer-wise or not)

You want?

Wow. Nice.

Maybe you'll succeed by encouraging him in that direction BUT there are no guarantees here.

Ultimately HE would have to WILL what he wants to be by himself.

Very simple OP.

Are you in Lagos? If yes, look for Coding Boot Camps for your child. I don't know your location I would have suggested a very fine one around Gbagada.

Also, get a computer for the house and supervise his use on it.

Yes to Scratch too.

The age is not too small. Your son can start off learning scratch then move on to a language like C or C++ at his age money isn't a factor so it would be good to learn things like that.

He can also go a step further to learn data structures and algorithms and start competing with his mates on solving hard programming questions. Don't allow anyone say your son is too young. Go and check the age of kids participating at the international Olympiads for informatics or google and Facebook code jam. They are mostly within the age range of 9 to 16.

Good day bros....I would love to build a career in ICT.please can you advise! Thanks

I salute your effort for trying to guide in him early in his professional life.
Alot of computer gurus today got introduced to programming at a young age and
anybody telling you he's too young has no IT background.

My first introduction was at 11years old with a Vtech computer and I learnt Basic Programming language (I don't know if they still exist).
By the time I got to the University, Basic Programming had become obsolete and we were learning C programming as a foundation language.
With the background I had in Basic, C was so easy while some of my classmates where still trying to get a hang of it. (If you know one programming laguage, learning other languages would be easy)

Being introduced at at young age will help him align his career and determine early what aspect of IT he wants to focus on or what language he wants to master. I would advise you enrol him in a school, online courses on programming at such a young age isn't encouraging as there are many questions online classes can't answer. There are Bootcamps like Audax, CodeSpark, SPark IT Academy that focus on children, learning with his peers will give him the confidence he needs, and most of these schools provide mentorship programmes that track his progress.

I must also inform you, learning programmng is like learning a new language fom the very basic. If he stops learning too early, he'll forget most of the syntaxes. I would recommend a minimum of 6 months of programming until it becomes a part of him.

Why do you think he will fare well in that line? How can you not mention the reason for wanting to guide him towards this career. Please do if you really need sound advice and not force your child down a path he has no interest in. You will end up doing more harm than good. How are his grades?...or guess that doesn't matter.

He should fall in love with mathematics first. Most concepts in programming are deeply rooted in mathematics. For instance, performing the binary search algorithm requires a sound knowledge of algebra and set theory.

To be an excellent software engineer or Web developer, you must be a good mathematician and logician. You can get bye without being sound in mathematics but it would definitely haunt him when looking for jobs as he must pass algorithm interviews.

Convince your child to fall in love with mathematics, everything else would fall into place. Get him a good software developer to teach him basic programming for 6 months probably once a week, watch his enthusiasm.

Light. If it was available as it should, I think many people will know how to code. Affording a PC is another part. I am sure there are some 500L students of engineering and computer science who doesn't still have a Laptop.

Your kid should understand how to read and comprehend properly. You see, most of these tech wiz in our present age had that ability which made them able to self develop themselves. Good education is good. At least, I think if your son understands what a variable is, he's good to go.

I will rather advice you study his interest and work on that from that age.

Passion is the drive in succeeding exceptionally. That homeboy might not dig what you wish, and might not even be able to challenge you depending on how you both relate.

You can only support his interest. What if he opens up to you he wants to make it to the NBA or NFL. Or tells you he wants to be a zoologist.

Dont derail your boy so he wont look into your face when older to tell you he actually wanted to be something else. Some old people still say how their parents derailed their career

Very daft thinking sir, primary school itself is guidance, shall we stop kids from attending primary school if their destiny is basketball?

In the UK right now they're encouraging children of minorities to join d aviation industry, would you pass up the opportunity just because you want a child to decide for themselves at 9?

Life is simple , you open the kids to several opportunities and let things run it's course , different from saying don't try at all and wait for him to decide by which time it will be too late, catching them young is the best strategy.

This is a very good start. I have such plans for my kids. They can begin making money from an early age.
Expose him to websites that teach programming. A good place to begin is Free Code Camp for free lessons.

Seems you have a problem with comprehension. But I wont explain again.

What you explaining is why the West will always have an edge over Africans. Not that they read all the books like we do, we even spend more time in classes than them, but to no avail. Why your lots so much value formal education and impose on kids, its not a norm for them. The IQ of a 10 year old boy is like that of a 15 year old in Nigeria. They know what they want. Like you said imposing education on them, they know how to make it school and get bad grades, they know how to go about pursuing their passion after classes.

If the likes of Bill Gates, Zuckerberg, Christiano Ronaldo or Messi were to be born in Nigeria, they "DEFINITELY" would have been derailed with your mentality. Probably would have been enrolled in extra lessons.

And when you know the impact of passion in learning, you will get to realize that not even formal education can stop it. Its a steroid. And why I said he needs to find his boys passion. Thats how you bring up the best. Find their passion and drive it.

9 year old is too young, what he or she needs now is parents love and proper upbringing. Don't allow Nigeria environment to pressure you into damaging your child.

Contradictory arguments.

Westerner's guide their kid's with everything.

Austic children, disabled kid's etc are catered to, not based on the kids decisions but what's best for them.

You provide them with everything at your disposal then let them decide .

In the ops case, this is just one option to seek, i know families that enrolled their kid's into piano, software, acting classes etc.. the kid's would have options.

Your initial arguments make's it seem like a 9 year old need's no guidance and should be free to evolve accordingly , go and read what you wrote.

Tech for sure.

But succeeding with what is trending today may become a problem due to over saturation.

The dad should encourage his son to be part of a new lucrative sector that yet on tapped. It can be a new type of IT.

When we where kids, it was medicine, Eng and law and co, but today things have changed. Those that studied those courses are not reaping the fruits their earlier predecessor reaped. Change is constant, you most be part of the current trend to succeed.
