NIGERIAN ARMY RENAMES OPERATION IN THE NORTH EAST, SEEKS INCLUSIVENESS

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lieutenant General Ibrahim Attahiru has approved the renaming of the ongoing Counterinsurgency Operation in the North East from Operation Lafiya Dole (OPLD) to Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK). This is premised on the fact that the Nigerian Army (NA) has made a lot of progress over the years and needs to re-align for better efficiency. Also affected in the re-designation are the Army Super Camps which now reflect the nomenclature of the formations and units followed by the name of the locations they occupy while sub-units are redesigned as Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) followed by the name of their locations. All these changes are with immediate effect.

The renaming is in line with the COAS Vision of having "A Nigerian Army that is Repositioned to Professionally Defeat all Adversaries in a Joint Environment". It is the believe of the COAS that the complete defeat of insurgency is a process that requires the participation of the entire nation using all elements of national power. He further assured that the NA under his leadership will continue to pursue the path of jointness in prosecuting the counterinsurgency war.

Following the above its game time. First it was the Air Chief now its the Army Chief both saying the same thing. Effectively DHQ owns this war.

Let's see how this plays out with critical analysis. I have a good feeling of Gen. Irabor in the saddle.

Four days after he renounced his earlier repentance and returned to the forest, Auwal Daudawa, best known for his role in the abduction of 300 schoolboys in Katsina state has been killed in a rival fight.

Reliable sources informed Daily Trust that Daudawa was shot dead Friday evening during a gun duel with a rival gang at Dumburum forest located between Zurmi Local Government in Zamfara State and Batsari Local Government in Katsina State.

The notorious bandit shot to prominence after he masterminded attack on Government Secondary Schools Kankara where he abducted over 300 schoolboys overnight.

Two months later, the bandit appeared in Gusau, capital of Zamfara, along with five of his men where he announced his repentance and handed over 20 AK-rifles and other weapons to the police.

On Thursday, this newspaper exclusively reported Daudawa’s return to the trenches after he vacated his new abode in Damba, in the outskirts of Gusau.

Sources told our reporter that Daudawa was killed while leading his men on a revenge attack on boys loyal to another bandit called Ballolo.

It was gathered that while Daudawa was in Gusau following his repentance, some armed members of the Ballolo camp attacked the position of his men in an attempt to rustle their cattle, killing two of Daudawa’s gang members in the process.

Daudawa was said to have vowed to retaliate.

A source told Daily Trust Saturday last night that while Daudawa’s gang succeeded in killing some persons in the opposing gang, their leader was felled down by bullets of Ballolo’s boys.

Good riddance. One of the reasons why I don't buy into the repent and get amnesty program.

They've tasted success and have received huge amount of money, they can't just renounce banditry just like that. They will surely go back sooner or later.

The DSs should be taking these kind of people out silently Sameway America did with Osama.

What happened in Mainok and at different theaters in OPHK has been really saddening. We all know that in order to win this war, we must take control of our supply lines. That should be our first priority and objective. It seems we don't even have an area occupied 90% by our troops except Maiduguri and Damaturu. We need to gain more ground and take control of the major roads.
I can't say it directly what needs to be done to win this war, because i am not in OPHK HQ or AHQ or DHQ. I can only give suggestions. Now, something we failed to notice is that NA is matching the Enemy 1:1. Its not supposed to be so. We have artillery and armour. We are supposed to use them efficiently and effectively. So identified the 4 problems that should be solved within NA.
1. Indiscipline
2. Maintenance
3. Fifth columnists.
4. Manpower

This is the the time for those smart, fine officers and men should show up. We need brilliant officers. Especially middle and junior ranks. Officers who have the ability to improvise, read battles and be efficient. We are having a situation in which most of our middle and junior officers are sticking to our doctrine and pamphlets. We need to realize that each situation requires different approaches. Truth is, the most successful infantry commanders in NA history are unorthodox to the extreme. If you keep sticking to doctrine, you will become very predictable. Especially when you are still using nearly the same doctrine used in the civil war!

I completely agree.
I used to think these guys were nigerian adults, that led me to the conclusion that nigerians are extremely dumb. I have had students who were as young as 15 and those students were all smarter than most nairalanders I have exchanged with.
If the nairalanders are teenagers then it explains a lot.

The way nairalanders think is mostly childish, in most cases they are indeed ignorant of what an average secondary school student knows perfectly...while speaking to nairalanders, you often need to state the obvious, they even challenge extremely simple logics...

The "quota system" allows illiterate Sunni northerners to become army officers and once those guys are in the army, they get fast promotions above way smarter people.
How will such a thing encourage smart officers to perform ? Also there is an unwritten rule in the army: don't be smarter than your superior and if you are then hide it well. When your superior is a northerner whose intelligence is nil, what can you do ?

Ghengis khan had this idea of promoting soldiers according to merit. That has been proven to be the best system for the military and for any sort of company, but in Nigeria a parallel system is operated.
