What Happens When The Federal Government Declares A State Of Emergency? by Blue3k(op): 1:01am On May 05, 2021

A lot of concerned citizens are demanding president Buhari to declare a state of emergency due to insecurity but nobody outlines what happens afterwards. What emergency powers does the president get after making this declaration? Are more funds going to be released? Does the president start conscriptimg troops?

In 2018 Buhari declared a state of emergency on water, sanitation and hygiene, has anyone experienced any noticeable changes since? What about the states of emergency decelerations made under Jonathan? If the answer is no why do people believe this emergency declaration will be different?

It will lead to greater military presence on the streets.

I also have it on good authority that the military is in a big recruitment drive right now, to significantly boost its numbers in the face of current security challenges.

So if you're looking for work, this is probably a good time to hand in your application to join the military.

Interesting, can it be inferred the President can't add these unspecified number of troops on the streets without a state of emergency declared? What law in particular prevents him from these troops if you know? I really don't see what prevents him from doing so right now especially after calls for this state of emergency.

When they declare a state of emergency, it allows them to suspend certain civil rights provisions of the constitution, such as freedom of movement, freedom of assembly, freedom of speech (to prevent incitement to violence etc), rights preventing detention without trial, etc, and they are also have greater authority to impose curfews and lockdowns, stop and search operations etc.

Joining the Nigerian military right now is suicidal especially if you're from the south.

State of Emergency takes away most of the democratic tenets and principles. The House of Assembly may not even function independently. The Judiciary will be an appendage under the control of the military administrator. Military oppression of civilians and even extra judicial killings of citizens.

State of Emergency is the last born of war in a democratic setting.

Noted I'll add those examples to the initial post. I can't find the 2009 example but I did see a 2011 and 2013 states of emergency declared by Jonathan. Who knows if the 2013 emergency expired.

Let the military send only the northern soldiers to the north to fight the terrorism there, and allow the southern soldiers come down to south to settle the issues there simple.
