At the end of the day, your interview and decision depends on your VO! Pray that Baba God will bring you to a sensible VO who is mature and non sentimental, and non discriminatory.

Some of these VO’s look down on Nigerians too much thinking everyone is broke or poor

Abeg, it’s just like the way some Nigerians go to Babcock, Covenant etc and spend millions in fees, while others go to Federal or State schools.

I got admission to other schools, but I really wanted to go to Stevens. Because of the quality of education there. The research work of most of my would be lecturers and professors were in line with my own research. Then to crown it all, graduates from Stevens get jobs immediately.

Two weeks to the completion of your program, companies like Microsoft, Google, IBM, Facebook, US Agencies like CIA, FBI, NSA would come to the school and start scouting for people to employ.

Good luck to intending interviewees. I wish you all success

Visa denied in Lagos
May 4, 2021

First time, First denial
COA: $60k
No funding at all
University: Stevens Institute of Technology, NJ

VO: What would this degree do for you?

Me: This course of study has concentrations in Network security and data Protection and it pertains to what I currently need in my workplace for career growth. I work in an IT company.

*due to the fact that I was already nervous. I blurted the above out so fast.

VO tells me. Hold up. Take a deep breath. Now continue.

I continued...the course would also assist me to get the much needed promotion I have been working so hard for in my company.

There is something about using work place promotion as a reason to go for a masters degree abroad.

I don’t know if you wrote the amount you earn in your Ds-160 form. But If you earn between 300k-700k, your mom won’t want to spend about 27million each year for 2 years so you would come back to earn a salary increase of at most 700k-1million which is even an exaggeration on my part.

VO: How many schools did you apply to?

Me: I also applied to Bowling Green State University, Bowie University Maryland and Kennesaw State University.

VO: How many admitted you?

Me: Stevens, BGSU and KSU admitted me, while I’m waiting a response from Bowie.

BGSU and KSU might not be as highly ranked at SIT, the VO knows if you indeed got admitted to the schools, you will opt for one of them due to affordability than go to SIT with that HUGE COA.

Thanks so much for your response. Now I see why I got denied

I put in my salary in my DS-160 form

What I filled in was 250k monthly. I was just being honest in my application.

So I should have lied in the form ?

Hello,

Good day everyone, I have a few questions and I'll be glad if anyone can put me through cause I'm new to this whole visa processing thing.

1. Is it advisable to admit I'm going for my 2nd Masters degree after completing one in Nigeria.

2. Can I make use of a family friend SOA; is it a red flag. Although i already made use of it in getting the i-20 form from the school. But is it ok to use it for Visa interview.

Going for second masters is not advisable except it pertains to career change....else comot that first masters from your app

2 family friend is not good....rebrand him/her as uncle/Aunty

They've the old record, so if you fill anything else, it'll lead to straight denial

My advice is obtain BGSU I20 and use it for visa, then if you're keen on going to SIT then transfer when you get to USA....that 60k no be am...I'm even surprise you said you can afford it....E be like say you go cut small money for me grin grin

That’s very true bro, that’s the reason I said from their previous experience with some Nigerians that later fall out of status because they were unable to pay for their fees. That actually makes them decide immediately on our application at times. But what they need to know is that not everyone is the same, you don’t tell someone what will be good for him/her , he or she already knows the best thing they will ever need. But just because of the mindset they have about what Nigerians are seeking, they use it for everyone. Let’s just hope for something new bro, you will get it next time.

1. You are working in Computer Science and going for a Masters in Psychology. Why do you need the degree? Your current job and the degree you are going for couldn't be more different. Put yourself in the VO's shoes, how would you react to this?
Also, it is never good to volunteer unnecessary information at your interview. There was really no need to mention that your work is Computer Science related, It all started going downhill from there. Why not just say "Through a colleague at work" ?

2. You applied for 2 very unrelated courses. I wonder why. If you are going for a grad degree, make sure you studied something related in your undergrad and that you are also working in a related field where that degree will actually be helpful to you. If you studied something unrelated in undergrad then it is still okay as long as you are working in a field related closely to the degree you are going for.

You need to restrategize and prepare better.

Thanks so much for your review.

I work for a big organization and my work is computer science related: I didn't tell the VO this. I just mentioned it here for you guys to know my profile
Now, this school gave me admission in Computer science. I chose Psychology because the admission came out first.
I also didn't mention this. Just added it here to give a little background.

I'll give feedback on my next interview probably in June or July.

I’m going to be honest here. You were the one constantly reminding people that no funding = visa refusal. And I feel you went in there with that mentality. Change that. Also $60k is too much for someone who earns 3.6m. I feel like you contradicted yourself a lot. I honestly pray you get it the next time. if you can please change your school, there are schools that will offer you same course ,same research for lesser COA just like the schools you mentioned you applied to. Best of luck to everyone who has their interview tomorrow, God will go with you.

NB: My best friend is saying I shouldn’t post my transcript on NL, but I’m posting it, so maybe someone will learn a thing or two.

Background: The queue was very long, over 300 people or more got interviewed today. Our biometrics were taken by 2 white guys. One middle aged and one young guy. I didn’t even know they were VO’s too. I thought they were just ordinary embassy staffs. I guess they were taking the biometrics to reduce the queue. Then as soon as there was no one else for biometrics. They resumed their VO duties.

There was an elderly VO, I was hoping he would interview me, he was not denying based on sentiments. He would analyze your case well and let you defend yourself and speak. He approved people that were able to speak well and defend themselves and denied those that were beating around the bush.

He had just finished interviewing someone, and it was my time to be interviewed, his window was vacant, but Unfortunately, as I approached, he left his desk, he was going for a short recess I think.

I was ushered to a young VO. One of those who were taking biometrics earlier.

VO: Pass your passport and I-20

Me: passed it

VO: What is taking you to the United States ?

Me: *talking boldly and with a loud voice* ...I am going to Stevens Institute of Technology, the third most prestigious University in the state of New Jersey for my Masters in CyberSecurity.

VO cuts in and says: I don’t need to know that information.

*insinuating that I shouldn’t have told him my school is the third most prestigious institution in NJ

*My heart started beating fast and I became nervous, that I have messed up.

VO: How many admitted you?

Me: Stevens, BGSU and KSU admitted me, while I’m waiting a response from Bowie.

VO: Who’s paying for this?

Me: My mother ...then I added, I have her account statement here.

VO: What does she do?

Me: She is a real estate developer, the acquires hectares of land and develops it into estates. She also builds houses and sells. And develops for people too.

VO: How many staffs does she have ?

Me: About 15-20

VO: What is her monthly income

Me: 3.6 million.

*Now this was where I messed up. My mom does not have a fixed monthly income. She is a businesswoman and her money comes in steadily. I don’t know what made me say 3.6 million. I was already nervous and feeling dizzy. I’m sure my mother earns more than that monthly.

VO: Who does she live with ?

Me: She lives with my younger sister

*Honestly I don’t understand why he asked me this question

VO: Who do you live with ?

Me: I live alone, then I added with my fiancée

*I actually live with my fiancée, I don’t know why I said I live alone in the first place. Maybe because my fiancée is not currently around and I have been alone for 2 months.

VO: You live alone, with your fiancée. Okay

He types on his system for about a minute.

*I feel they type in the questions they ask us and our responses for record purposes.

VO reaches to the stack of letters, picks out a denial letter and hands to me. Then says “you don’t have the funding requirement for this program”

He didn’t even bother checking my moms account statement. It had a very good balance

Please, I need your advice. When I had B1/B2 visa interview like two years ago, I had already filled it in my previous DS160 form that I had MSc. This year, I have got admission for MSc with funding, in a slightly different field. Will it not be a problem if I don't add MSc as part of my qualifications while filling the DS 160 form for F1 visa interview?

Another tip for intending interviewees!!!

If your masters course of study is far unrelated to your Bachelors degree!

Except you are going for an MBA

Straight denial!!

2 guys were denied yesterday by 2 different VO’s for that reason.

The question they would ask you is why the sudden change in career? And if you can’t defend yourself well, denial letter

Also, avoid filling things or saying things that would lead to unnecessary question you cannot defend.

This is so untrue.
I got my visa approved yesterday.
I did my BSC in electrical engineering and I am going for my masters in informatics.

I just told the VO that I wanted to change careers.

Guys just be confident, do your research and know what to say.

I remember you posted here some days ago that people with no funding from their schools, that it is try your luck they are doing, I didn’t even know you had no funding from your school too while you said such. I think that’s what affected you, you took that wrong mentality to the embassy, though some people corrected you here not to have that mentality but anyways wish you good luck in your next trial.

Thank you for sharing your transcript. I'm certain many lessons can be learnt from there.

Your case scenario, you were nervous. Did you undergo any mock interview before your interview date?.

Also, if you have another school with a lesser COA then you can switch when reapplying and back it up with a cogent reason. If you want to stick with stevens and You say you have the money to pay the fees without funding, but convincing the VO that you do, is something you have to go back to the drawing board to figure how?.

N.B: as someone singlehandedly pointed, you raised a claim that it's almost impossible to get visa without funding. It's ironic you also fall in that category, I can imagine how that thought process must have rigmaroled your mindset.

Every question that a VO ask has a meaning:

What is taking you to the US. You spoke too much. Who doesn't know that SIT is prestigious in NJ? Infact, that point is generic. Is like you are going to Carnegie Mellon University and you are still telling the VO it is prestigious.
For guys that doesn't have funding there are three questions that you should talk a lot,why this school, why this course & what does your sponsor do( you should praise your sponsor well here except your sponsor is a rich public figure so you dnt need to talk too much). You should be able to defend all what you say.

What this degree do for you: Your response are generic. Why are you interested in Network protection & data security? How will these courses help your career? What promotion are you seeking? To IT Manager? You should back your points with examples.

Who is Paying: My mother is okay. *I have the account statement here* shows desperation and you shouldn't do that. Only when the VO ask for any evidence to support your mums sponsor is when you ask: Do you mean like a Bank Statement? Then you can bring it out. Unless VO ask for a document dnt push for it.

What does she do: You played it low! My mum is a respected real estate developer in Oyo State. She has acquired land worth over N300m & has several developed lands worth more than N100m.My mum has also patnered with the Oyo State Government to provide lands to Civil Servants & to several big wigs in the entertainment industry...... you should praise your sponsor.

How many staffs does she have: The VO wants to know how many people your mum is feeding that's why there's a follow-up question of how much does she earns annually & you answered that with nervousness. So, get the logic! Next time check your SOA well to know the net cash flows per month and get a rough estimate for a year by multiply by 12. There are a lot of questions on SOA that I can't talk about here that the VO can ask.

Who does she live with? She wants to know whether some guys at home also depend on your mum or how close you are with your mum.

Who do you stay with: whether alone or your fiancee is wrong. It doesn't make sense to be married and staying with your fiancee and your mum is sponsoring your Education. It will make more sense if you and your fiancee are sponsoring it ,your fiancee is sponsoring or you are sponsoring.

Normally, an ideal DS-160 should look like this. You are single, you are staying with your mum and your mum is sponsoring your Education.

Please is it compulsory that the passport on my DS-160 form should be the same as the one I will take to the embassy, cos I snapped the picture I used for my DS-160 on my phone. So I don't have a passport copy.

Question for the the TL, you sent a professor an email, telling him that you have interest in his/her research specialization and will love to work with him, then you ask if he has space in his lab for you for Ms? That if he needs your transcript/CV you'll readily supply, then he replies and tells you that he has space, that you should please apply to the graduate school. He didn't ask for any sort of transcript/CV, now how do you see that reply as regards funding, do you think he'll fund you if admitted?

Long post alert!!!

I'm doing this for the benefit of others not established gurus in the house, who know better than me though. So ogas feel free to correct me where I'm wrong.

Some of the points been posted by some of us are not true, based on my personal research about US immigration law for F-1 visas. That is what the VO applies on you, sentiments apart.

Facts:
- Some people do not just meet the requirement for F-1 visa. Why?
They are not going to the USA to study. Simple.
If you're talking to "a student" you will know. They are mentally agile, their application will demonstrate their academic interest and you will see the enthusiasm.
If you like carry all documents, you may still not be eligible, if you're really not a student.
Do mock Interviews with your school officials, formal folks, or others, and see if you are convincing enough. Research your course of study and understand it. Show your capacity for research - abi you no be student? If you can't convince yourself, you can't convince anyone.

- The visa interview process is not documents based. It is an open conversation where WHAT YOU SAY is really what will be used to judge you. That's why for some they never look at you BS or credentials before approval or denial. They really don't care so much about that.
Who are you? Are you telling the truth? From the way you are speaking and acting (your carriage matters), do you sound like someone who understands the purpose of education or a masters degree? Do you have a clear idea of the impact your study will have and how you will create that impact? Ask yourself.

VOs want to gauge from the totality of your application (DS-190, I-20, etc), if you meet US immigration law requirement for entry under F-1 status. US Immigration Law is clear:
- You are admitted to an approved institution.
- You have the academic and mental abilities to study and graduate.
- You can fund your total living & study expenses.
- You have ties and intent to return. (Even if they know that if you get a job you may not return)

If you're a VO, would you approve a visa for someone who can't articulate confidently why they want to study for a Masters Degree or a PhD? Or why that particular university among the hundreds in the US? You reason am naw?

Look at Nigeria, the problems we have in this country should give anyone enough facts to make strong case to support their application. Do a deep research, find a problematic area that your course of study will tackle. Rationally and logically articulate why it is important for both Nigeria and the USA for you to study for this degree. If it's sensible and well communicated, even the VO will be struck by your reasoning, except they are simply mentally unstable, which they are not.

These are just my thoughts as someone who has successfully attended international educational interviews before.

I'm an applicant. Got full funding. My proposed MA is different from my BA, but I have relevant 3 years experience across 3 African countries. Been doing some late night research about the course, the likely questions, and how to address them succinctly and decisively. Only when preparation has been fully done will I engage God in prayers. God is not mocked whatever you sow, you reap.

At the same time I believe if I answer truthfully and honestly, visa will be approved, cos I'm really going to study, not trying to "japa". If it's not, then it's not an indication of my self worth. Life and the pursuit of purpose goes on.

Hello please a question for the TL.
I have a full tuition waiver to ULLafayette and an Assistantship, I scheduled an interview in Abuja and was given 20th August at first I requested for an emergency date and got 6th August. The new date is still quite late seeing that I have to be in the US to resume on the 18th august. My supervisor is a bit concerned about this late date. I want to ask is it possible to reschedule again and this time change the interview location to Lagos having heard Lagos has earlier dates in may and june and can I do it at no extra cost? Please I need your takes and advice. Thank you.

NigPatriot:

I didn’t undergo any mock interview. This was my first time, I have learnt my lesson and I’ll come back harder and stronger.

Thanks for your response. I get you

But at the end of the day, it still depends on your VO’s mentality.

There was a guy who answered all his questions just like you have outlined or even better and still got a denial.

Everyone in the queue was shocked!

Things dey happen true true

Check to see how funding look like in the department...how many TA do they give out each years?. Check if the Prof. has his own funding (very important) for research, hence he is looking for MSc students with the right profile. Finally, that some Prof. tell you to apply doesn't even equate admission, how much more funding.
