Several months after the delay in the issuance of passports, the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, on Saturday said the Nigeria Immigration Service was working to ensure all outstanding passport applications were issued by May 31.

He also said that from June 1, passports would be issued within six weeks, explaining that the COVID-19 pandemic affected the issuance of passports in the country.

He, however, said the government had launched the electronic temporary passport to ease the burden on Nigerians.

Aregbesola spoke on Saturday during a virtual inaugural quarterly lecture series of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission which was monitored by Sunday PUNCH.

The event was tagged, ‘Mobilising Nigerians in the Diaspora for National Development.’

Aregbesola said, “The Nigeria Immigration Service also had their fair share of the pandemic which affected passport issuance.

“We have launched an electronic temporary passport to ease the burden of Nigerians.

“By May 31, all outstanding passport applications will be cleared. We are also looking at domesticating passport printing to avoid a shortage of booklets for renewal and new passport collection.

“Also, from June 1, the collection of passports will take six weeks and this will allow us to carry out due diligence.”

Also speaking at the event, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Zubairu Dada, assured Nigerians abroad that diaspora voting may be realised soon.

The minister disclosed that the Independent National Electoral Commission and the National Assembly were currently working to make this materialise.

He said, “NIDCOM is working closely with the relevant committees of the National Assembly and relevant stakeholders, particularly INEC, to allow those in the diaspora to vote in Nigeria, and I remain very optimistic that in no distant future, we should be able to allow the participation of Nigerians in the diaspora in our national elections as obtained in other climes.

“INEC and the National Assembly are working to fashion out ways to actualise diaspora voting in Nigeria.”

Stating the efforts of the Federal Government towards mobilising Nigerians in the diaspora for national development, Dada said the government had created an enabling environment for diaspora investment through the annual diaspora investment summit.

He added that efforts were ongoing to establish an investment fund.

This news will so excite those immigration officers stationed in offices. Those officers are like marketers...they are really athletic and physically fit to grab any visitor coming into their gate for the purpose of processing international passport. They surround visitors with very aggressive persuasions so they can cash out. The duration of your passport processing depends on your level of compliance...else you will apply for your intl passport as a youth and get it after retirement.

This country should cease as a forcefully unified entity. All these corrupt elites are clung to one Naijiriya for stealing and plunder, and they have enabling cheerleaders in the compromised clergy, complicit elite class, and the mass gullible and intellectually deficient populace.

One human corpse and dead vulture griller would soon be here with his shouts of "darling daddy." People like him were executed in France's reign of horrors to complete the French revolution of 1789-1792 against the Bourbon French Monarchy and their accomplices

Happy Sunday, Folks. May the Lord help us all

We celebrate mediocrity in this country. Of course nobody will question why it takes that long to access common passport.

Everything, i mean everything has failed under Buhari. It seems like the passport were reserved for the political class alone, just imagine the hassle just to get a Nigerian passport and i am expected to be a proud Nigerian.

Are you normal? Must everything be politicized? If u have failed in your grilling nonsense, must you fail in every facet of your life? Even core part members try to condemn a system if it is poor, but for you its a display of low IQ. No wonder Nairaland is littered with your likes , go to QUORA, REDDIT, TOYTOWNGERMANY and see very reasonable ideas and contributions... Grow up before its too late

Tell us the official price and make the payment possible online. Both renewal and new applications should be eased and only data capturing should require physical presence in your premises.
This would prevent corruption of your officers and alleviate the stress on the applicants.

This man is the most useless minister in the history of Nigeria, his ineptitude is unfounded and incomparable. Thousands of Nigerians have lost opportunities because a minister has failed in his responsibility. For 8 months Nigerians home and abroad can not get passport renewed for Visa and other work related issues and we have a minister in charge doing nothing
