I did! Management first and Law second.

Like you, OP, I was disenchanted after my first degree. I was working in banking and I hated it. Meanwhile, I always felt a sense of outrage at the human rights abuses that occurred in Nigeria and all over Africa. I felt Law would be my path to a position of influence. Besides, I have always had a strong argumentative bent.

I was 26 when I finally went back to school and finished at 30. It was easier in the beginning but as I started to approach 30, I began to second guess myself because my mates from my first degree were flying, getting married, having kids, but I kept reminding myself of why I did it.

It's not like I was broke, as I have always had jobs and side hustles, but I was more concerned by the lack of vertical growth in one chosen field. The thought of starting in Law at entry-level at the age of 30 was unacceptable. I was able to reach a compromise--I started a business that brings me enough income so that I don't have to depend on Law for my living.

I can take on human rights work that I care about without having to worry about making money from it. This has led to a rapid acceleration in my legal career through meeting movers and shakers and enriching my CV, such that when I do decide to go for paid legal work, I will easily leapfrog many lawyers who started before me.

In summation, do what you love, but don't discard what you already have.

Dear Nairaland,
I am in a state of dilemma now. Choosing between going for masters and pursuing my passion of studying medicine is quite difficult for me.

I studied chemistry Education, graduated well, served and I'm now teaching. I am barely two years into the profession and I am already tired of it. I feel I deserve a career not just a work. A career in medicine for me is something that I belive will make me happy. it's something I can do even if I'm not paid for....I'm 25 years and I feel I have no time again.

I hope to go pick up a JAMB form this week to pursue my passion and happiness. I will not want to make any mistake here. So I believe hearing from people who have been in this shoe will guide me.

Have you been in this situation?
Did you pursue your passion?
Please share your story, age at which this decision was taken and how it has impacted your life.

This will go a long way in guiding me through this critical decision.

Thank you

I think you should follow your passion because that's where you will find true fulfillment,it may be destiny calling,so long you have the funds and energy you should go for it.

A career in Medicine will require an investment of another 10years at least.

Can you afford to be dependent for another 10 years cos as far as your parents are concerned they have already settled you educationally

I actually did after my first Bachelors in Nigeria.I had to after moving outside the country, I had to research courses that align with the country’s needs and high demand. Computer science did the magic and I haven’t had any regrets with the years spent in college. Initially I had friends that laughed at me but today they are envious of my progress within a short period of time.My advice to those moving to the US or Canada, I don’t know much about other countries, is that they should research and go for courses that are in high demand in their respective countries. I have friends that came to the US to study international business. Today many of them are depressed and one has even resorted to yahoo out of frustration.

I studied Agric Econs for my 1st degree, then I sat for JAMB UTME in final year and now I'm in 200L. I've never regretted my decision for a single day..In some countries , you must have a degree before going to Medical school..It's Medicine or nothing for me, that was my mantra.
in the United States of America you must have a degree before studying medicine and surgery.

Dear OP, I'll advise you go with your passion. You're obviously making a good decision which I believe you won't regret. In most advanced countries, you must have a BSc before you can even be admitted to study medicine. Hence, I don't think it's late for you to study medicine. My honest advice would be that you have adequate funds or sponsorship to see you through this new phase. All the best!

Didn't happen to me personally but I know of a guy who did something like this back then in school, he rounded up his first degree in Political Science, did his Masters degree in Political Science and subsequently wrote JAMB afresh and applied to read Law in our Faculty which he got, he is presently a 500level Law student, would have graduated last year if not for Covid19.
It is just possible provided it's your passion you are pursuing.

25 should be the age at about which you aim to have had your MBBS.

But if you feel so passionate about Medicine go for it. But I personally think medicine is a scam if you think it will make you rich.

Most doctors in Nigeria earn peanuts, live in hospital premises, and are insulted by patients , colleagues and seniors alike. Many struggle to feed, and have to run multiple jobs to keep afloat. Reading is often too much for them that most end up thinking they know everything while other end up feeling they know nothing.

MBBS in Nigeria is harder than military training. 1st MBBS exams is a scare and it makes you understand learning in a different perspective. 2nd MBBS makes you religious, and asking God to help you and you'll serve him forever. But with every subsequent exams the certainty of graduating probably opens up.

Starting off a business or growing to the peak of your career would likely be a quicker route to breaking even. As a lecturer you can join multiple ASUU strikes and fight the government for earned allowance every 2years.

If you aim to study medicine and leave Naija then cool, but if the aim is to remain in Naija, then good luck too, that one fit rough. Some mechanic make more in Naija.

In all I wish you the best, and if you choose medicine I wish you a great career.

It is very possible considering the fact that age is even still on your side, and you want to go for your passion..

Just make necessary plans a d move forward with your life, before age works take your passion away from you.

I have somebody we finished togther as a microbiologist who still went ahead to study medicine and surgery after we graduated.

Goodluck to you
