Exactly.

I spoke with a mother some time last year, and what she said shocked me. She said she wouldn't mind her kids doing internet fraud as long as it brings them money. She said, after all, they are only helping Nigeria to collect back the wealth our colonial masters stole from us. Such disgusting mentality.

I wonder what parents teach their kids these days, no morals whatsoever. Have you noticed how kids just walk by you these days and don't greet? I personally don't mind that as the greetings don't feed me; however, it makes me reminisce the times when we greeted every elderly person we came by, not minding if we encountered as many as 20 before getting to our destinations. We never got tired of greeting. Up till now, I'll greet you as long as you're older.

All in all, I still feel the sitting room is the right place parents can leverage to instill manners into their kids. Let siblibgs bond together and spread love. I've seen brothers and sisters who hate each other's guts, and I believe it's their parents who failed to help them bond.
why should kids greet the elders that bleeped up this country?

You are thinking from a gynocentric Egalitarianistic-Equalism frame of mind working with these secularism dogma as your dominant ideology, sure western societies that don't have Culture have shifted from poliltcal conservativism to radical liberalism

We can see the results
1) Moral decadence via hook up culture
2) Decline in marriages and child birth
3)High rate of Divorce at 50% rate and women initiating about 75% of the divorce
4) 40% of children are born out of wedlock and In black American communities it's 60%

These all lead to the destruction of family values and units and children from single motherhood households tend to be criminals, drug addicts, strippers, illiterate, commit suicide, etc

At least our elders have kept family values intact and there is no incentive to divorce because our laws are still Patriachal

The unity was always there
We play together and eat together

Very good observation. This is what this age lacks which sources for continual moral decadency

You're quite observant. I'm not saying that the manner with which kids were raised in those days was particularly perfect, but this tilting to the Western way is dangerous. The results are there for all to see. Our family system is fractured and, I don't even think there's a way back from here. The change is irreversible. It's only a matter of time before a 10 year old would address his father's mate by his first name. The difference in social orientation between Nigerian kids born in 2000 upwards and downwards is so different that, you just don't understand it anymore. 80s and 90s kids know to greet seniors, stand up, if you're sitting down, before shaking an elderly person. They know to leave the room when elders are engaged in a discussion. 2000s kids don't know anything about these things because the system that's supposed to introduce these etiquettes to them is destroyed. Parents now just want to buy every gadget available for their kids so they can be distracted enough to give them some peace and quiet.

By kids, do you mean teenagers?

Before playstation and cheap phones, teenagers were always known to stay in their rooms. This is the time their lives get busier (school), then you add puberty to that and it doesn't get any easier until they are a bit older.

During mine, mum would ask my brothers to sneak on me and find out what I am doing. Then she moved to making me eat and stay in the living room. It wasn't a pleasant experience for anyone.

The best is not to alienate them.A couple of years more, they are back to socialising but not like before. With the amount of content these days, why should I watch the same thing with everyone?

Mustiboy, You were making sense till you got to the threat. What do you mean that your child cannot have their privacy "under your roof"? Do you realise that people are different and some people like their PRIVACY? Even if you want to tell them to join, can't you do it with love and try and make them see reasons why they should?

It's your type that think because you are giving someone money you can do and undo and control them. People like you, when your kids have their own money eh, dem go show you! E go shock you!

Your observation is true, nowadays everyone just minds his own business.

When I was growing up I remember we used to converge in the living room to watch television especially those NTA soap operas and dramas of those days grin

In a sense, perhaps. Though, in my day, books served the same purpose. I mean, imagine my parents sitting me down in front of Nollywood when I can be reading a good book, I know which I would prefer, just as I am certain I would prefer coming on here to read intelligent posts like yours instead of Nollywood.

I was lucky. There was no Nollywood in my days, to start with, and telly even was no more than one single NTA channel, so my dad and I got quality time discussing books and world events courtesy of the BBC World Service and Voice of America and other radio stations from around the world as received on our Blaupunkt (see photo), while ma, a nurse, was busy doing shifts

If parents listen to their kids more their kids might talk to them more, is what I think.

Wow!

Nice to see someone like me here.

I also grew up listening to BBC and VoA with my Dad.

We had TV, but I listened to the radio more.

Now I have an internet radio app on my phone and still listen to BBC.

Rest on, Dad. I miss you loads!

@OP!! Simply blame d Social media because in most homes diz days, Mothers re on Facebook n WhatsApp watching videos while Fathers may be in Vanguard or Punchng.com following online news during dier spare time!!

No time for their children!!
Later, dey will now blame Schools!!

Also, I Feel it's a Generational phenomenon!!
The world is moving away from d Circle of 'Responsibity' into a circle of 'Terrible irresponsibility n Anything goes'..

Dats y you see d rate of divorce, homosexuality, cheating in marriages, hypocrisy, etc is going High..

Our Family values is no taken seriously!! It is wat it is.. sad undecided

Expect more changes in the next two years. But after that love will come back to families. People are too stressed up, no one is reasoning well any more, parents only want to make sure the kids eat at least n b getting to other things brother strength don finish o. Buhari brought much suffering joke aside..people are loosing hope everyday. Imagine a state dropping thousands of workers when they were elected to minimize unemployment n reason being that there is no money to pay. And if a state is such frustrated what do u say about families? Brother I'm not just happy, parents are going through alot this period. Pray for them

Things fall apart bro.

Same for my dad.
We must rush out to welcome him when we heard the sound of his car horn and if we don't do that then he felt disrespected.

I miss the old days.

Let the new world come in peace and stop basking in old euphoria undecided

And let the vices and failures that comes with it come in peace.
OP is particularly right on the subject of greeting, It has everything to do with respecting elders which children of this age lack and the beginning of moral decadence in the society.

Am just thinking out loud on my mind. How can I avail my kids the opportunity to enjoy the kind of sweet family life I grew up in?

This generation is fast drifting Into the shadow of moral bankruptcy.

Family ties is now almost gone extinct.

Very true. My kids are permanently on their phones. Netflix (family plan) is to blame and unlimited wifi. The boy is on Playstation online, you will only hear his voice from his room when talking with his online pals on "fortnight". You hardly see them unless pizza time.
Thank God for their grandpa's house nearby. He does devotions (Bible stuff) with them on Saturday mornings.
