Sanwo-Olu: Parents Of Children Convicted Of Cultism Will Be Punished by damilola4162(m): 6:59am On May 28, 2021
The Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has said the parents of children convicted for cultism will also face punitive measures, Newspremises reports.

Sanwo-Olu stated this on Thursday during the Children’s Day celebration at the Police College, Ikeja, addressing pupils and students.

He stated that a new law had been signed to fight cultism, adding that parents must be alive to their responsibilities by paying attention to the moral upbringing of their children.

Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, said, “The new law against cultism prescribes punitive measures for parents of young people convicted of cultism. Parents should be vigilant and monitor their children.”

“We owe them a duty to ensure that their dreams and aspirations are realised through continuous training, guidance and mentoring.”

This is the way to go, because parenting is a serious business, since the child is under 18 and not liable to face punishment in law court, the parents are to suffer the consequences, that is normal

He stated that a new law had been signed to fight cultism, adding that parents must be alive to their responsibilities by paying attention to the moral upbringing of their children.
In as much as this would have been a good news but,
Statistics shows that 80% of parents of cultists trained their children well, but some children will definitely bring reproach, disappointment and embarrassment to their parents.

hopexter:
This is one of the best ways to curtail cultism. The consequences that will befall your old parents who are managing and still supporting you in school is enough to hinder you from being a cultist. This law is to encourage filial piety. Well done Lagos. smiley smiley
But, do those animals reasons like normal humans?

TGM2015:

I am not sure of your statistics but the law is indirectly saying report your child if you know or suspect them to be with friends you are not comfortable with.

You will agree with me that majority of the parents of the cultists, yahoo boys/girls, etc are either full aware or correctly suspicion of their child's involvement in such crime. Many must have gotten reports from family and friends on their children criminality or bad associations.

Hence, the law is justified logically, religiously and morally.
@the bolded, looking at it from that point of view, then that makes more sense.
Thanks for the more detailed analysis and clarification.
If it is about parents not reporting their children that are cultists, then they should face the music.
We are talking from the angle of parents not training their children in the right way, which sounds somehow to us.
But your post makes the news good music to our ears now.
Thanks!

Sheggy13:

Which empirical statistical research did you get this 80% figure from? While I agree with your premise that some of these cultists come from good homes, that 80% figure I feel is an overreaching claim.
Let us bring our statistics down to 55% cos of your sensible post.
Or you think 45% will be okay?
Let's negotiate Egbon Sege!

Do you know how many children of Pastors, Alhajis, Doctors, Lawyers etc are cultists?

We will like to know how this punishment will actually be meted out.

This is simply preposterous and outrageous!

Good, a parent should easily know when the boy's lips turn from fresh to burnt and red eyes, even when you see some kind of friends around your child, even through slangs.

Sanwo-Olu or Fashola I don't know who impresses me the most

In North Korea when your family members commit crime you are shipped to labour camp and made to work for the government

In many African cultures they banish you with your families, that's why most parents beg their children to remember whose kids they are before stepping out

Nothing is bad in fraternity, but this new bloodsucking , thieving , rapist murderers called Cultist must be stopped at all cost

SMH @this clueless statement from a funny Governor.
Instead of creating activities that will engage young people and make sure NOA(National Orientation Agency) do the needful sensitizing in all the slum areas of Lagos this Mofo of a Governor is tryna threaten parents to stop their wards from societal ills or cultists activities?
Why not create a policy that makes children that are caught to face harsh rehabilitation program for years instead of this incompetent approach of punishing Mr & Mrs Olu for the wrong decision of Tokunbo!

We need young visionary leaders abeg.
This goes to show that Lasgidi Governor is not smart but a puppet!

Spot on! Leaders in Lagos are thinking people and I pity states whose electorates handover their governance to people who don't pay attention to details and research.

This solution has been there all along but they were wasting time only on prosecution in courts when there's a bigger court.

This policy invokes the age long Yoruba cultural way of how the Yoruba society was built based on the functionalist sociological perspective.

The deviants and their parents are clearly identified as dysfunctions in the society and the symbol of the collective authority show them as symbols of dysfunction and as a deterrent so the family is treated as such. It is very cheap and sustainable. We grew up hearing the story of armed robbers being paraded with their parents and most parents then personally hand over any child with criminal tendencies straight to government first before it becomes a public shame to the parents but now most parents are glove in hands with their criminal and unpatriotic children. Imagine a 21 year old Dominic Joshua duping 500 people and the parents are being hidden away from public light. We need to see the face of the parents of that boy who defrauded people of N2 billion.

The Omoluabi concept is a reward for those who fulfil their functional roles in the Yoruba society.

It should not be cultish alone, it should include Yahoo Yahoo and terrorists like Boko Haram terrorists and IPOB terrorists .

Police should show us the face of those who badly raised Dominic Joshua. Who is the father and who is the mother of this young man, Dominic Joshua ? They should henceforth parade them with their parents!visit www.freestuffsng.com for latest freestuffs in Nigeria. God bless Nigeria.

Hehehe.

Nigerian leaders are comedian's.

I understand the part where he talk about being vigilante towards the children, but as for punishing parents for their children actions, that am against.

Some kids are just too difficult to handle. Their are a lot of good parents with bad kids.

I have seen a lot of parents who do their best in bringing up a child, but the children chose a different part.
