Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku believes racism in football is at an "all-time high" ahead of the start of the European Championships.

The 28-year-old who is preparing for Belgium's opening game of the Euros against Russia on Saturday has received racial abuse a number of times, notably when he was the subject of monkey chants from fans in 2019.

Lukaku believes abuse towards players is currently getting worse

"I think racism in football right now is at the all-time high. Why? Because of social media now as well," Lukaku told CNN Sport.

"I understand why people like Thierry Henry are blocking social media because it's easy, you can track somebody down ... The social media companies, they have to do more for me."

Earlier this year, former Arsenal forward Henry deleted his social media accounts following a spate of online racist abuse aimed at Black footballers.

He slammed social media companies for their inability to hold users accountable for their actions.

"For me, to be honest, I don't really see progress. I see a lot of campaigns and all that stuff, but really until there is no real action taken," Lukaku added.

"In Italy, when it happened to me directly, there was something that was done because the Serie A really communicated with me and my team.

"And we basically tried to educate people in Italy that it is not good, because in Italy, it is a beautiful country and I've been accepted really well by everybody, home fans, away fans.

"I think when that happened, it changed. That's what all the leagues should do. They should talk to the players and basically try to start doing things with the players and with their teams."

That's the reason an african had stop winning ballon d'or or a best league performer... they'd rather give it to a white defender

After George Weah's undisputed performance, no African had won World Best Footballer of the year. Had Mike Obi been celebrated like Messi who came to prominence same time with him after the tournament hosted by Holland, during which Milel won the Golden Boot, he'd have been encouraged to do more while in Chelsea. At some point, they were benching this guy. No frustration could be more than this. Only Mike would explain his plight better. The Holland tournament was also marred with fraud, just to be sure we didn't get the trophy

Racism will continually be there as long as Europe is the centre of football and you are an Asian or African playing there. Just concentrate on your career and making good money. Everything will be okay.

they said common sense is common but on Nairaland, you will discover many people with no trace of a pinch of it...I am currently serving a 30 days suspension on Facebook because of my harsh verbal reaction to someone that racially abused me on twitter yesterday.
Racism exist and it's not good or something you expect people to experience because a guy on Nairaland does not have sense.
If you one day travel out of the country to leave among a people who sees their colour as superior to yours and want to deal with you on that basis, you will shove this your perception down there.

Seems Buhari cause this global racists too, same with Nigeria today towards Fulanis, their occupation and major religion.

What many Nigeria do not understand is that we are living in the aftermath of

1. PDP reckless spending of Nigeria treasury in build up to 2015 elections causing financial and economic woes.

2. PDP reckless campaign again Fulani and Muslims in build up to 2015 elections causing disaffection against Fulanis, Muslims worst Fulani muslims.

What do you then expect. It's not different from every day criticism we face from the normal job we do. Even at place of work, the black do more job than the so call white racist. If you tried to prove your point to them in case a report is made concerning you. The white boss favour his white counter part and whatever u say is a mere trash. End Racist/Black live matters EVERYWHERE.

George Weah of Liberia beat Jurgen Klinsmann of Germany to win the award in 1995. The first and only time ever a black player has won it.

I think that was the year the award was open for black players as well...not sure but Weah won it.

The year when Liverpool won UCL, Sane or M.sala deserve UCL best player, but will rather give it to Vanjik since both were Africans... Rasicm should be an offence
