Good evening.
I got a good deal today to buy a Ford ranger truck,
Single cabin ,manual transmission,air conditioned,gasoline engine,high range truck with 4×4 and a container body.
It's something very necessary for my line of work and I am tempted to buy it.Infact I love it but i don't want to make emotional decisions so I really want to be sure.
So I don't know if it is a good and reliable truck that can handle proper beating offroad as my routes are filled with damaged roads and all..
I've had an awesome experience with my Hilux but I don't know if the Ford ranger can offer me same ruggedity without breaking down all the time and burning a hole in my pocket(I have really grown to hate spending money on cars so I like to keep it at minimal levels if possible).
Please house gurus,I will appreciate your expert opinions ,

American is strong

The international not too sturdy for bad roads, especially the 2X4 body deforms easily and parts are expensive in Nigeria.

We have fleet of the vehicles the predecessor 03 to 11 is very strong but the 12 upwards international has a poor rating to me though our fleet is used for jungle work, those used in city are still strong and doing well

The Ford is new to you, so all the wrong you got used to in your Toyota is obvious now.

There is a reason those two are head to head in all markets they compete in but the Toyota's advantage has inly been in reliability.

The government policy in Nigeria(influenced by certain interest) has only given the Toyota an advantage over all other competition, so the benefit of the work truck has not been experienced in Nigeria. Farmers and tradesmen are none existence because of this missing work tool.

This is even the south African build, that is sweet, image the US or Australian version.

Go test drive a 2021 Ram 1500 or F150 and feel the difference in what the present has Nigeria is missing

From stiff clutch in the hilux that makes driving synonymous to mountain hiking ,
The hilux is way slower than the ranger ,however I think the hilux has more power cos the way that thing jumps out of muddy terrain,i don't think this ranger can do it.
Then the air conditioning in the ranger beats the hilux,
However parts of the ranger is more expensive.
How can i forget?The ranger takes way less fuel than the hilux.
Well,so far i think it's been a great experience owning both cars.
Yes,the hilux is more reliable,than thing just don't die so i guess that's why it sells more than its immediate competitors.
And i love how close to each other the gears are in the ranger too,makes it almost impossible to skip gears when shifting,nice one.
I don't think I will ever buy the F150 though,looks impractical to me,Bring me a toyota land cruiser anyday

what size of engine is the Ranger. I expect it to be a work truck, so no extra stuff anywhere.

I drive the 2018 Hilux and I have driven the manual ranger, exactly your type on several occasions. The difference is night and day.
The Ranger has so many options deleted and I can imagine same with yours from the picture you posted.

The truck doesn't take potholes well, doesn't take bends well either, it's rather too stiff for my liking always bouncing over everything.

Interior is too bland as well and gear shift range too shallow. I don't know the costs of parts but I can imagine price tags at Coscharis.

I've driven the Hilux as a daily driver from the 2007 all the way to the 2018 and I take the Hilux any day.

What I'll consider a step up is a Tacoma which I have enjoyed from 2007 - 2020 as well as the Ford F-150 but that can be a gas guzzler with it's big engine

Bouncing car means bad shock absorber.

Everything else is a classic Toyota fan opinion of other models, there is a reason some are called work trucks, these are pangolo trims, not XLT, OR Lariat
Comparing a 2013 pangolo to a 2018 hilux is not fair, especially if the Hilux is automatic.

Comparing a South African pangolo to an American mid range trim is not fair either.

Is the Ford Ranger a good truck to buy if it is in good shape?
I believe OP had answered that question from a owners point of view. And we hope he gives us update on how it goes. If properly maintained.

Parts will mostly be original. @ N500 to 1
It will be irresponsible to expect parts to be cheap when Nigerian Customs Service has collected a huge duty on those parts

Americans not so good at making cars .... but when it comes to commercial vehicles ... they are more reliable but not as reliable as others like Toyota. When it comes to work vehicles... I strongly believe they are the most rugged. I see them a whole lot ... and the abuse they take is not down here. In general... whatever you can load them up with... they will take.... smooth roads... rugged roads... doesn't matter. My advice to you ... is have it well maintained and I suggest you use Nurey as your mechanic. American vehicles are nowhere as tolerant as Japanese vehicles.... the reason I suggest Nurey ... he is already familiar with the vehicle. Take it to one of those adventurous trial and error mechanic... you will be doomed. Enjoy the ride.

I am not a mechanic or car technician I just know about cars.

The car in question is owned in fleet by my work place. We have only international ranger they don't use American from 2003 down to 2020 model.

It is used in jungle for patrol they are good and fast for highway but bush work not so good especially the 2door long bed, they experience steering rack leakage, severe underneath scraping especially when loaded and constant steering and wheel hub issues. Like I said they transverse severe jungle with stones and gully the 03 to 12 is a very strong and cheap truck especially in jeep form (ford Everest)
