Something like that assumes that you're on the same team, rather than being antagonistic or blaming. It gives him or her specific information, rather than a vague statement of "there's too much work!" It's also an offer to help with the problem, rather than just dumping it on your boss and saying "you figure it out."

If you were reporting to me, I'd respond well to something like that.

Diplomatic talk after late delivery of task. Wrong discussion MIGHT send a signal that you want your salary to be shared. Just psych the boss, saying you notice and also observed the business is growing, and growth is tantatmont to demand, hence blah blah blah. How you say the rest is totally up to guys relationship.

Back in those days as a manager, my boss once asked me to sack a particular staff. I told him outrightly that I won't sack her and won't tolerate it if he sacks her. If we having a meeting, and he ask for updates, I will say I'm working on a b c, I will done in 4 days time but d and e will be challenge to complete on schedule.

My point is he should be getting hints you won't finish everything on time, that way he knows the work is too much.

I know it's not easy but better he knows before hand you won't complete everything on time

Most times, having work overload arises when you've hinted to your employed that you can over labour yourself by your own actions like foolishly working overtime unpaid, trying to impress by rushing through your work so as to appear competent, unnecessarily accepting multiple tasks at the same time etc
