There are two key words there.
1. Received: This refers to when Christ was on earth physically. Some people received him to their homes while others didn't.

I didn't tell you of myself. I told you what Jesus Christ taught, what I have obeyed and found to true. Jesus Christ is God's New Covenant Law and Truth in the Kingdom of God and no one who rejects His teachings will enter in through the narrow gate or into Heaven.

I just don't get what all the brouhaha is all about. Its simple logic. Jesus died for the sins of the world. As long as you believe He is your saviour then you are free from sin. Therefore sin cannot take you to hell. There is no one who doesn't continually errs or sins. As long as you believe then you are freed from the clutches of sin. SIN CANNOT TAKE YOU TO HELL. If you don't believe that He is then by all means you are condemned and hell bound. St John says anyone who believes does not sin. Why? Because you are covered.
