The word Oba is the title of the Oba of Benign: Omo n'Oba n'Edo Uku Akpolokpolo.
The yoruba starting copying this title rather late in the colonial era, indeed at the beginning of the colonial era they would refer to themselves as "ooni of ife, sir adesoji aderemi" but late in the colonial era they changed all that to start calling themselves "oni of ife, oba adesoji aderemi".
By the way adesoji aderemi is the first yoruba monarch to officially copy the title of the Oba of Benin.

The Benin empire was a treacherous empire, one of the worst political structures ever known to West Africa.
The only reason that Britannica could've falsely asserted that the term Oba is Benin and the fact that Benin Republic was named after Benin when everyone knows that it should've retained its name "Dahomey" or better yet "Yorubaland" given the vast amount of our people that existed there and still does to this very day, was the fact that these were the enemies within.
Don't get me started with the treachery that this good for nothing institution led us into, from colluding with the Potoki to waging senseless and counterproductive wars against the very people to whom they adopted the language of their ruling class.
The rulers of the Benin empire were responsible for the success that the Potoki had in certain parts of West Africa.

The slave trade wasn't the main business of Benin which was mostly selling palm oil, ivory and many other things, the slave trade was mostly done in the slave coast.
