If you call cranking out halfwits an advantage, then yes. But in reality, all of this is growing into a future humanitarian disaster, not just for Nigeria, but for West Africa as a whole. As Northern Nigeria continues to graduate unqualified quacks, the end result is poor administration, increased poverty (as a result of its large population growth) and constant migration (individuals fleeing, as a result of banditry, herdsman and Boko Haram), all of these things are due to lack of and/or poor education. So I say again, if you call producing halfwits an advantage, then yes. But the truth is, the moment oil loses its relevance or if Nigeria breaks apart before that happens, someone is going to have to deal with the teeming poor in Northern Nigeria, 10s of millions of the poorest people on earth.

It's a pity just as you have said. This perceived dominance is a curse eternal to the North and this is why the the South should pull itself out of this union called Nigeria at all cost.

The DOT states are not doing badly at all.

Many people misunderstand the plight of poor Northern children in this cut-off point show of shame. The reality is that while Northern elite send their children to top-drawer private schools, these young poorly educated cut-off-point victims never make it at SSCE and UME. They generally drop out, doing odd jobs and many becoming drug addicts. The young people who use quota system to secure plum jobs are still children of the elite. Head or tail the rich and influential win.
Then they should hold their leader instead of draging us all. Or better still demand for their own country where it will be just them and their rules.

Should we lower the bar or improve performance?

We will keep opening the doors wide till all the idiots fall through and then later claim they are fully certified professionals but at what costs.

We keep lowering the bar till that incompetent doctor engineer etc kills people.

And the 'person' still gets support from his people. Yes, they're smart. See how the entire north stood with Pantami. If he was a Southerner he would be in prison now, his brother would have betrayed him.

Being violent and extremely bigoted is not smart. Racists and violent people are rarely smart. They are just extreme non-compromising strong willed bullies who are willing to go to any length to impose their will or views. The fact that their fellow racist violent people support them doesn't make them smart too. There is only so far you can go with that method because people eventually stop being afraid and become increasing rebellious and defiant. It's happening right now.

Court Cancels Disparity In Federal Colleges’ Admission Requirements

gratiaeo:
DECEMBER 18, 2014 BY RAMON OLADIMEJI
{
A Federal High Court in Lagos has entered judgement in favour of an application by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, seeking uniform admission requirements into Federal Government Colleges, otherwise called unity schools.

Agbakoba had sued the Minister of Education, Mr. Ibrahim Shekarau, over the disparity in the admission requirements for students seeking to study in the unity schools.

Delivering judgement in the suit marked FHC/L/CS/1358/2013 on Wednesday, Justice James Tsoho held that such disparities in admission requirements into the Federal Government colleges were against the spirit of Section 42(1) of the 1999 Constitution.

The judge held that since the Constitution was supreme, it would automatically override any administrative law or policies adopted by the Ministry of Education.

The court therefore ordered Shekarau to apply uniform admission requirements, especially cut-off marks, to all candidates seeking admission into unity schools across the country.

In a 19-paragraph affidavit filed in support of his suit, Agbakoba had stated that since the inception of the unity schools, the Federal Government had maintained disparities in admission requirements.

He noted in particular that the Federal Government prescribed different cut-off marks based on the candidates’ gender and their states of origin.

He therefore sought a declaration of the court that the action of the education minister in prescribing and applying different requirements, including cut-off marks, to candidates seeking admission into unity schools was in violation of the Constitution.

He asked the court to grant an order of perpetual injunction restraining the education minister from all further acts of discrimination in admission to the unity schools.

Unity Schools: Agbakoba reiterates call for adherence to court order on uniform cut off marks

News Agency Of Nigeria
March 22, 2019 4:13 PM

As entrance examination into Unity Schools across Nigeria approaches, a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Dr Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), has reiterated his call for a uniform cut off marks for all students.

Agbakoba spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Friday, emphasised the need to eschew ethnicity and promote unity in the society.

NAN reports that Agbakoba had in a suit numbered FHC/L/CS/1358/2013, against the Attorney General of the Federation and the Federal Ministry of Education, had sought an order, restraining discrimination against students applying into unity schools, on account of their ethnicity or place of origin.

The Federal High Court had in a judgment delivered in 2014, ordered that uniform admission requirements, especially cut-off marks, be applied to all candidates seeking admission into Federal Government Colleges.

Responding to questions on the impact of the court’s judgment to consequent admission process into government colleges, Agbakoba said:

“I am disappointed; If you recall, the judgment in Olisa Agbakoba v. A-G Federation & Ministry of Education FHC/L/CS/1358/2013, the Federal High Court Lagos Division, had restrained further discrimination against students applying into unity schools on account of their ethnicity, gender or place of origin.

“The Federal High Court’s judgment has established that the Federal Government policy which prescribes and applies different requirements including cut-off marks for candidates seeking admission into these Colleges, based on gender, ethnicity, or state of origin, is discriminatory and violates the Constitution.”

He, however, lamented that almost five years down the line, since the court’s judgment was delivered, its orders are yet to be complied with by the relevant stakeholders, regardless of whether an appeal subsist against same.

He said: “The full benefit of the judgment will come when it is obeyed.”

On whether the term “Unity Schools” have served its purpose of achieving integration among the diverse ethnic groups in society, Agbakoba said that the first set of unity schools in the country, had strive to achieve a measure of unity among the diverse ethnic groups.

He, however, noted with disappointment, that the infiltration of discrimination among Nigerians is now responsible for polarizing citizens along ethnic lines.

As entrance examinations into the federal colleges are billed to kick off in April, Agbakoba called for a holistic adherence to the decision of the lower court.

“The relevant authorities should obey the judgment of the Federal High Court, Lagos, by applying uniform cut-off marks for all candidates seeking admission into unity schools, irrespective of gender, state of origin or ethnicity.

“The judgment of the Federal High Court is subsisting; the appeal by the Federal Ministry of Education does not prevent the Federal Government or the Unity Schools from obeying this Judgment,” he said.

I have said this a million times and I will repeat it again
It is disappointing to see people who claim to be educated, claim to be university graduates come out and misrepresent statistics.

The cut off point in common entrance exams do no mean what they are being purported to mean.

The state with the highest cut off is not the best performing state and neither is the state with the lowest cut off the worst performing.

I will repeat that for emphasis

The state with the highest cut off is not the best performing state and neither is the state with the lowest cut off the worst performing.

That will take some time to digest for those who have an agenda to pursue but that is the reality?
What those scores reflect is simply demand and supply.
The states with the highest cut off are the states with the highest demand. The greatest number of candidates.
The cut off mark for German candidates will be Zero because there are no German candidates. If the FG reserves 5 slots for Germany and only 1 German takes the exam guess what the cut off would be?

Common Entrance scores do not tell us that Group A is brilliant or group B is dull as many want to project

Anyone who does not grasp this fundamental is as dull as those they are trying to mock

There may be injustice somewhere but it is not in the scores. It may be in the number of states or the attributed population.
So e.g. if tomorrow the SE is given 5 more states and NOTHING ELSE changes ceteris paribus, the cut off for those states would drop very significantly

The facts should be use to make the right argument
Secondary school provision is not the place of the FG. Unity schools are created for a purpose of "unity" and if they are no longer required the funding would have to be distributed to the states. Unity schools must have a quota system and if we don't want that they should be scrapped

Isn't it funny that when it gets to federal appointments, you realized that same states with very low cut-off marks are the same people that are heading the judiciary, military, administration, legislative and every other strategic post. Then a PMB will come out to tell you that he places competence above all, with the impression that southern regions may not have a competent candidate for his screwed appointments.
Nigeria is a case in study!
No nation will expect to be blessed with the grace of light where quota system, nepotism, religious affiliations, tribalism and bellicose patriotism is regarded above meritocracy.

Why are you surprised? Those low cut off marks is to plant their people there and that is the cospiracy thing. Unlike we Southerners that think we are so smart and intelligent, the fact remains that the northerners know how to play the dirty game than us

What a country.

A time will come when we will have Zero (0) as cut-off mark...

I have a dream that a time will also come when Nigeria will have minus hundred (-100) as cut off mark.

So even if you didn't write the exam you are guaranteed admission under the negative cut-off mark.

Meanwhile Congratulations Mr President., PhD acquired.
lol… don’t even dwell on cut off marks. You see states like Yobe, Bauchi, Jigawa will not even use any, all you have to do is to obtain form.

The question is even with that low Cut Off mark, how many of the said Northerners still want to go to school?

Majority of abokis hate school, especially as it has to do with learning English. Squatting in front of one alfa to learn Islamic studies is more suiting for them. They believe they can make ends meet by applying physical strength in working for someone or doing their own trade. Saving much is not a necessity as they don't live and spend extravagantly. That's a typical Hausa man for you.

Only those who have traveled out of their comfort zones or have mingled with the greedy nomadic Fulani invaders from Niger tend to be more exposed to civilization.

WHAT DOES FG MEAN BY EDUCATION DISADVANTAGED STATES? IS THERE ANY FACILITY GIVEN TO ANY STATE IN THE SOUTH THAT WAS NOT GIVEN TO EACH NORTHERN STATE?

INSHORT THEY HAVE BEEN GIVEN MORE THAN REQUIRED. GO TO THE NORTH YOU WILL HARDLY SEE ANY SCHOOL BUILT BY COMMUNITY ALL GOVERNMENT THIS... OR GOVERNMENT THAT...

CONVERSELY COME TO THE SOUTH, ABOUT 95 PET CENT OF SCHOOLS ARE BUILT BY COMMUNITIES AND HANDED OVER TO GOVERNMENT TO MANAGE . THAT IS WHY YOU SEEN COMMUNITY SECONDARY THIS... OR THAT...

DID ONE ASK THE NORTH NOT TO GO TO SCHOOL? EVERYONE MUST NOT ATTEND SCHOOL.

THIS JUST AN AVENUE THE NORTHERN ELITE USE IN PLAYING CHEAP POLITICS ON THE SOUTH WHEN ALL THEIR KIDS ARE ABROAD STUDING.

ONCE IT COMES TO SHARING OF RESOURCES THEY WILL CLAIM DISADVANTAGED BUT IN LEADERSHIP AND JUICY POSITIONS THET CLAIM ALL TO THEIRS
