Economics cos they are highly sought after than accountants

you read my mind - it would seem the only pathway after Accountant is Auditor (very little room for career movement)

On the other hand, Economics is very adaptable to today's world of Research and Data on both a Macro and Micro level, they are sought after by Governments and Financial Institutions.. you can sail your career from Risk management to Corporate and Structured Finance to Advisory, etc.. it is just so much more adaptable than Accounting.

Besides, Computing and AI is taking over accounting functions these days

Accounting, please.
Afterward, do your ICAN and Peachtree.
You will be on fire!
Which one be Peachtree again. The world is fast evolving and the financial sector is not left behind. Lots of automation here and there. Peachtree is just for Secondary school students nah. Go for professional software certification in finacle or t24

Option 1
1.Go for BSc Economics, since you already have HND in Banking and Finance.
2. Write and pass the CFA exam (if you have money) Or sit for the useless ICAN where you will be told to learn a craft/trade during your induction.
3. Prepare to study Economics up to PhD level (if you fail number 2)

*Note*
BSc Economics alone without additional qualifications in Nigeria is useless.
YOU WILL SEE THAT MOST PEOPLE TELLING YOU TO DO BSC IN ECONOMICS ARE ALSO SAYING YOU SHOULD WRITE ICAN. WHY WASTE 4 YEARS STUDYING A COURSE THAT WILL BE USLESS TO YOU.

Option 2
1. Go for BSc Accounting.
2. Write and pass ACCA or CFA (if you have the money)
3. Go for MBA.

-----------------------
Save this on a word file and print it out.

HI, I'm asking this question on behalf of my son. He will finished his HND accounting next year. Should I advise him to write ICAN and skip BSc. or should I tell him to go for MBA in Canada? (I'm not sure if this is possible without a B.sc tho.)

Thanks

Accounting of course, it's really more professional and highly demanded for any day any time.

All agencies of government and private sectors requires the services of an Accountant while other discipline/professions can fit in for the economist.

You have been properly advised and guided.

I come in peace.

No matter which course you chose, always look around your neighborhood, your relatives, the school's past two or three graduating class. How many of them have found a good job? How many settled for a low/average job and how many are still unemployed? This will help you to know the war ahead and make better decisions, as someone once told me, higher education in Nigeria is a scam but not all scams are created equal grin grin.

Definitely economics. It gives you a wider range in the job market when you graduate. While in the university, you can go ahead and take those internationally accepted professional certifications. It will be grueling but definitely worth it.

P.S. when i confirm the best finance certification from my friend is, I’ll update my comment and let you know.

Make enquiries from schools or Canadian studies agencies if it is possible for him to gain admission for MBA in Canada with HND.
If this is not possible, let him do BSc (conversion), it will not take more than two years. He should write any professional exam during his programme (he may or may not become chartered in this 2 years of course), after which he can go to Canada for any programme.

Surelay:
Why not PGD accounting then MSC Economic .You would finished at same time with your BSc with 4 cert.,,,OND,HND,PGD,MSC.
Maybe someone promised you job after Bsc
You mean PGD in Economics, no school will admit you to MSc Economics with a PGD in Accounting.
Even with a PGD in Economics, admission to MSc Economics can be difficult, because schools often require that applicants with PGD should have a very high graduation grade.
However, the PGD/pre-masters route is a good option, even to Canada.

Re: B.sc In Economics Or Accounting.please Advice by holybabayo(m): 11:11pm On Jul 07, 2021
I am an Accountant. A chartered accountant. I also have economics friends. I can tell you for a fact that if you have 20 graduates of accounts and 20 graduates of Econs with good grades, all the accountants will get jobs and only about 5 of the Econs guys will get a job. The skills that an econs graduates will provide will be taken up by the owners of the business. It is only the big companies that will ask for Econs. Even at that, they will have to compete with the banking and finance guys for the job.

However, an econs that gets a good job will earn more than an accountant in the future.

Noted thank you.

He most likely won't work in Nigeria. More importantly, I can't wait for the additional two years again just for the professional cert he won't need in Canada. Thanks again.

Don’t let anybody fool you, the econs is not useful if you don’t write any professional exams in another field eg. ICAN, ACCA, CFA. Don’t think your econs will get you jobs in banks ahead of those who studied Foods and Nutrition or Woodwork. Nigeria does not have sectors where to use Econs. You can’t practice on your own if you studied econs but you can practice on your own if you studied accountancy. The only problem with accountancy is that people are too many studying it and it can be discouraging if you don’t start your career well in a good company. I mean western multinational companies, not all this Saka Jelili Ltd, Hispro Hotels, or Yusdas Enterprises o. I am telling you reality. I have more than 17 years top notch work experiences across various multinational companies and I am a certified accountant.
While you are in school, please try and learn or teach yourself these skills and improve on them over time:

Microsoft Excel. ( don’t fool yourself that you are an advanced user the moment you can use Pivot table or use vlookup or xlookup o. Go and learn deeper Excel. There are free materials online.

Learn financial modeling using Excel to the best of your ability.

Learn Power BI or Tableau for data management, business reporting and analysis.

Learn PowerPoint ( I can give you a YouTube site where you can learn world class PowerPoint for free. I have materials for others too but I don’t guarantee they will be relevant by the time you graduate).

Finish your professional exams on time.

Aim high and target multinationals like GE, BAT, Nestle, Unilever, Atlascopco, P&G, GSK, Microsoft, etc. if you don’t eventually get any of those ones, you will get something closer eg PayStack, Flutterwave, Andela, Hayat Kimya etc. But if you lower your bar, you are in for a loooong thing.

All the best.

Re: B.sc In Economics Or Accounting.please Advice by TheGift: 11:27pm On Jul 07, 2021
According to degreequery.com

“ Accounting is just one of several disciplines found within the field of business. Another business subject that shares some similarities with accounting is economics. Both degree paths can be valuable fields of study for aspiring business professionals, but they equip graduates with somewhat different skills and prepare them for slightly different career paths. While both fields of study have their advantages, the benefits of choosing accounting over economics include a more specialized curriculum, a more straightforward career path and clearer opportunities for advancement.”

Speaking as a lawyer and Entrepreneur in the consulting space- I would advise you go for accounting.

It is less fuzzy and clearer career wise than accounting. Economics provides less opportunity for you to professionalize , except maybe as a economic theoretician.

Accountants can work in virtually any industry as they are required for public, private and even not for profit organizations.

There is a sense in which we are all economists especially when you realize thatb economics is merely labeling something that we all already intuitively know i.e the laws of demand and supply, opportunity costs , so big deal.

As an accountant with a good degree you have a higher chance of working with the big 4 consulting firms. You can pivot into auditing which is also big. You will be in high demand in high paying parastatals like FIRS.

Speaking globally , the world is moving more toward the practical than the theoretical and it is the numbers people that are making the key inputs , even where A.I is required to do work.

If you are good and confident as an accountant, there is a lot of influence you can have and demands you can make, because you see the numbers, the numbers tell a story and everyone wants to be a hero or at least look good in the story.

Economics cover accounting. Accounting is a second grade course like Mass Communication. English Studies and Linguistics and Yoruba cover Mass Communication

Most of the men in CBN are economist.

Who told you most of CBN staff are economists? Most of them read Agric Extensions or Animal Husbandry. Na for CBN I served in Benin in 2002. To enter CBN na leg o. Long leg. Take it from me. If you like, read Fire Fighting, you go enter CBN if you know person. That’s why CBN can’t fix Nigeria’s economic problems. Don’t respect most of the MBAs a lot of people have from Nigerian schools as well. All na parishe. If you know, you know. So many ties, belts, shoes were bought for lecturers o. Many dey work for Lagos and dey do post grad for another corner of Nigeria and dem no dey fail o.
