Why do you say so, Sir?

We could see the state of the airforce under Late AVM Alex Badeh RTD launching "airlines" to what they've been able to become today, due the increase in funding.

Wouldn't the police do better if they have more funds? They have the most men(450k) and they are getting a paltry $99m.

NPF has refused to engage themselves fully to any operations except of course under the Military,..
They are not just a prority.
To justify buget allocation, IGP needs to show the government why it expedient they increase their allocation... Either the reasons he gave are not convincing, or other branches are full taking care of it ..
Look at the NAF they are able to convince everybody the need for more additional fighter, isr and attacks platform, hence the continuous reallocation, they even were able to show they needed overhaul of the NAF regiment citing what happened in maiduguri yrs back, hence the continuous heavy allocation...
The reasons NAF must have provided weren't sufficient enough to prioritize them above or equal the armed forces..

I once thought about this, but who do you want to tax? A very poor population? If we tax the rich more than the poor, in this present situation, the rich won't let it work.
We can make it work. Don't get me wrong, but the bureaucracy is too much. The political will isn't there.

Nigerians are poor because of low revenue/tax to GDP ratio.

I believe we all have our biases sha, I would love the NAF to get more platforms, also NA.

But let's not neglect those which primary duties are internal policing.

Like civil defence who just basically collect salaries, I believe they can do a lot more, if they are the priority of policy makers

That's the main thing. Without money you're just worthless man, you won't be able to fight corruption, provide security, provide infrastructure or social amenities and so on.

Go and make research about countries who are around or on the same level as us with respect to revenue/tax to GDP ratio and you'll see similarities of issues.

Nigeria's economy is top 30 in the world, but revenue/tax to GDP ratio ranks below 100 countries(one of the lowest in the world).

DubaiLandLord:
Fight banditry, insurgency, not Kanu, Umar tells FG

A former military governor of Kaduna State, Col. Abubakar Umar (retd.), on Wednesday knocked the All Progressives Congress and Federal Government led by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) for giving undue attention to the arrest of leader of Kanu than the banditry, kidnapping ravaging the country.

Umar argued that it was disturbing that rather than concentrating on insecurity threatening to cripple the country, the Buhari regime was celebrating the arrest the IPOB leader.

The former governor stated this in a statement titled, ‘Nigeria: A nation challenged.’

Recall that Umar lost his commission in the Nigerian Army as a result of his principled stance on the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election acclaimed to be won by the late Chief MKO Abiola.

He said on Wednesday that the Federal Government must go beyond the arrest of the Kanu and pay more attention to more security challenges threatening to cripple Nigeria.

Umar argued that for the average northerners living in the North-West and North-East, who had been affected by the activities of banditry, kidnapping and insurgency, the arrest of Kanu had no consequence, “since it does nothing to ameliorate his harsh and brutal condition.”

He said, “The re-arrest of the IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, elicited congratulatory messages to the Federal Government which appears overwhelmed by the intractable security challenges and in dire need of any redeeming act.

This is clearly an exaggeration of the security threat Nnamdi Kanu and indeed IPOB pose to our nation’s security and unity. It is quite strange and disturbing that the Federal Government is paying undue attention to the threats of separatist movements in contrast to the more daunting ones posed by bandits, kidnappers and insurgents in the North West, some parts of North-Central and North-East.”

He lamented those activities of “those criminals have resulted in the evacuation of over 20 per cent the villages in the North-West and North-East. Hundreds are being murdered and maimed every week. Many more are kidnapped for ransom.”

He said, “Over 1,000 schoolchildren were abducted in the past eight months with over 300 still in the hands of the bandits and kidnappers who are demanding humongous ransom. Rape of women and young girls has become a daily occurrence. Most economic activities, particularly farming, the mainstay of the people in these areas, are now all but impossible.”

Umar counselled the government to deploy non-violent means in addressing the growing restiveness in the South-East of the country.

He, however, noted that “IPOB and its leader may well be responsible for some of the violence, including the murder of security personnel, arson and destruction of public and private properties for which they should be held to account.”

While touching on the unity of the country, the former governor argued that Nigeria was better as one and indivisible entity than disintegration.

The former governor carpeted the Buhari regime for not processing the skills in the management of the nation’s diversity.

Truth be told, the Buhari administration has so far exhibited poor skills in its management of our diversity. Yet it has the benefit of great examples by past administrations and statesmen which should guide it,” Umar said.

We didn't really need to increase VAT to7%. It was unnecessary. What were we doing with the 5% VAT?.
Nigeria's major sources of income are: taxes, port tariffs and oil exports. In recent years the FIRS, had been performing splendidly. Look, but its still not close. I go to the market almost daily to purchase foodstuffs. I see how market women are extorted by tax collectors. In a day, 10 different people can collect tax from a single stall. My point is, we are not even organized in grassroot taxation. Statistics might state otherwise, stats might say taxation is low, but actually people are extorted of their incomes daily. All these are reasons for our inflation and increase in prices of foodstuffs, coupled with insecurity.
We are a country that live with assumptions. We don't even have accurate data. We just use estimates. If you have stayed in rural areas, you will understand. I don't oppose increment in taxation. But we should be accountable. Taxes shouldn't be mismanaged

The civil defence could compliment the police as they have manpower shortages, they could be our National guard, or at least that was the purpose for which they were intended.

We can't go from Civil to military response as we have always done, they could be some kind of buffer before deploying the military in internal security issues.

Most curfews are enforced by military personnel, that should not be the case.

All that talk about expanding recruitment when we haven't been able to take care of personnel on the ground is ridiculous IMHO.

It would just further shrink the size of capital expenditure in favour of recurrent expenditure.

Let's give the police the attention that they desperately need

SOLDIERS of the military Joint Task Force, JTF, have locked down Egbema Kingdom, Warri North Local Government Area, Delta State, in the last five days, following an attack and killing of soldiers by suspected hoodlums at a military base in Obodo community, Warri South, a neighbouring local government area of the state.

The blockade by soldiers, which has made it impossible for people to come in or go out of the area since last week, has led to the food crisis in the affected communities with over 200,000 residents trapped.

The people in an SOS through the President of Egbema Leaders of Thought, Elder Edmund Tiemo, to the Chief of Army Staff, and Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, among others, yesterday, said: “We wish to draw the attention of the civilised world to the fact that Egbema people in Delta State are currently facing starvation.

“It is comparable only to what is happening in the Tigray region, where Ethiopian soldiers refused to allow UN peacekeepers and food to get to the civil population.

“While they denied our people food and medical attention, the army moved food to soldiers who guide critical oil facilities in our land.

“They have food, light and medical attention in their facilities in our territory, yet, as if it is not enough punishment that we lack these essential commodities.

“Our appeal, therefore, is to the authorities to open the Egbema Kingdom for life to return while the investigation, arrest and prosecution of the hoodlums can continue.

“Neither the people of Egbema Kingdom nor the people of Warri North agreed to the commission of the crime for which we have been punished.

“In other climes, where crime is committed, security men take time to investigate and bring the culprits to justice with the collaboration of the locals.

“We have been and are being punished for a crime that was committed outside our local government area.

“The background to this crisis is the alleged attacked on a military base station at Obodo in Warri South Local Government Area, where soldiers were allegedly killed by hoodlums.

“Although no official statement on the attack has been issued by the JTF, the soldiers had told passengers on the Benin River and Gelegele axis of the attack, thus justifying the blockade of Egbema since July 2, 2021, when the incident reportedly occurred.

“Before this incident, on June 28, 2021, few kilometres from the scene as the Egbema peacekeepers came under attack by unidentified gunmen, leading to loss of several lives. Thus, the military operatives who were attacked are victims just like the Ijaw in the area were also victims of criminal attacks.

“Therefore, it will be wrong for people who have suffered the same magnitude of losses to be subjected to this horror.

“The fundamental rights of the people to move as entrenched in Section 41(1) of the 1999 Constitution as amended have been clearly violated in the guise of chasing after hoodlums.

“Why on earth should the innocent populace suffer because of the crime of an unidentified few? We cannot agree less with Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe when he asserted that the Nigerian government of President Buhari operates two sets of laws.

“In the North where criminals kidnap, terrorise and kill both soldiers even school children, none of the communities is unduly punished for the crime of the few.

“President Obasanjo introduced it in Odi in Bayelsa State and now it has been taken to a higher level, whereby a whole kingdom of not less than 200,000 people is under siege for over five days consecutively without movement of people and food items.”

The VAT at 7% is still low bro.
Increasing our tax to GDP ratio means reducing tax evasion, revenue leakages, widening tax net and not just by increasing tax rate.
I don't know why it's so hard to do, Even many African countries have moved towards this path but we are still stuck with resource based revenue.
