My friend, I would advise you to go for Civil Engineering. I have been there, even if you travel abroad there's always job for you once you are able to settle down.

Thats the truth. They are both useless. You don't go to study a course with Nigeria in mind. If you are yet to enter the university go for IT related courses.
How are they useless ? Architect constructs a structure on paper and he is paid, while a civil engineer builds the structure on the earth and he is equally paid for it. So what's your point ? I make money by building structures myself.

In a ‘better country’. The two are not same. They are completely different with different career paths. Haba na.

Architecture is a very old prestigious discipline
Civil Engineering is another prestigious discipline itself.
They are not same. They work together but are definitely not same and especially in working ‘better’ countries.
so where did you see "they are the same in that my comment? Take it easy with yourself and on yourself, I know they are prestigious in their own lane, I didn't even say they are worthless or so, haa, are you sure you're referring to my own comment or you're mistaking for someone's else comment.
I say in a better country, the two together is structural engineering. So where did you see your argument From now.

I av a degree in both Civil Engr & Architecture (masters). Originally I applied to study Electrical Engr, bt was offered Civil Engr, I was very good with building design while studying Civil in HND1. One of my civil lecturer told me about architecture looking at my skill set. I visited Architecture dept in AAU & concluded dt this is my calling. Finished my HND bt felt incomplete, took the bull by the horn and applied for Direct Entry into architecture. The rest is history. Today I practice more of Architecture backed up with lots of knowledge in Civil Engr. Going for your Passion & giftens are good, there is a sense of fulfillment it, work will look like fun for u. U will be like JJ okocha who gets paid for what he loves doing. Both fields are superb. There are poor architects & poor civil Engrs, Na make God bless the work of our hands. Architecture is more flexible, durable & your can arrive at success in time with our without 9to6 employment if you are good. Civil is abit rough at the begining bt can also eventually pay off if u know what u are doing. I will advice your follow your passion as regards this 2 dynamic profession & truth be told the architect is the head of the building team. Warm Regards.

Bro, I’m cancelling your comment. You are wrong. Take it a little bit easy. Calm down. The two disciplines in a working country are not structural engineering.
Structural engineering is a discipline on its own and quite different from Architecture.
It is rather structural engineering and civil engineering that are same.
So like I said earlier, you are very very wrong

Oga you can only out do quack and useless architects when it comes to drawings. You maybe able to draw so called houses albeit with a lot of mistakes but you will never be able to design large and complex buildings. Another thing, getting COREN reg is way simpler than getting ARCON reg; you only need your Bachelors degree plus some years experience but for ARCON you need a masters degree. Plus COREN is riddled with corruption. We hear how our colleagues narrate how easy it is to get registered with COREN.
Architecture is a four years course. Engineering is a 5 years course. Complex building in Nigeria? Bros leave that matter. Architecture is as easy as one can absolve in knowledge and research. And getting ARCON is far more simpler than getting COREN.

An insult to civil engineering, it seems you guys are shallow Minded, civil engineering is into big things mehnn. Architecture is one of the branch or concentration in civil engineering in the western world ok. In civil we have the structural engineering, material and mechanics, coastal engineering, transportation engineering, geotechnical engineering and water and environmental engineering as concentrations and area of specialization. So, Nigerians typing rubbish here are myopic in nature for thinking that civil engineering is all about building and road construction. I’m a civil engineer in my PhD and my concentration is on material science engineering which focuses on smart infrastructure and robotics. Currently on internship with NASA

I am an Architect. 15 years since graduation and registered with ARCON and an NIA full member. Since you made your option Architecture vs Civil Engineering, I'll give you an honest response: Please choose CIVIL Engineering.

The reason is that it is more versatile. If you want to work in employment, you will have more opportunities and higher chances in other sectors than an Architect would. For example, road construction, oil and gas, and structural engineering consulting. It's only in Architectural consulting firms and more recently, in property development firms that Architects are sought. They may go to other sectors, but they may not work as architects there.

The second reason you should consider civil engineering. As an architect in consulting, my projects come from clients directly. For every project going more than one floor, I MUST engage a civil engineer, or advise my client to engage one. So a civil engineer gets paid for every Architect's project that is not a bungalow. My go-to civil engineer receives projects from many other Architects -without needing to get jobs from clients personally. This translates, on average, to more projects for civil engineers in the building consulting sector than architects (they may not be paid as much for one project, but on average if you are good, you will have more volume of work because your source will be from several architects, and this translates to more money)

The third reason is immigration. I recommend choosing a course that is easier to immigrate with should you consider immigration later. Do a google search now for occupations in demand in Canada or Australia, you will most likely find civil engineering (or its related synonyms), and not Architecture.

Someone here mentioned how you can make money as a student studying Architecture. I see it as a disadvantage. As an architect in practice, the fact that clients can meet students for something that we trained years for in Nigeria is bad (Obviously, they don't get the same quality and professional service). But the point is don't study something in school that anyone can do because of the poor regulation in Nigeria.

During my time of choosing a course, I did not consider an alternative. It was Architecture or nothing. So my advice is because you are considering the two and you consider that any of them will be OK for you.

If you must choose Architecture, make sure you are absolutely passionate about it and extremely able to delay gratification and have great capability for long-suffering. It can be rewarding, no doubt. But for most people, it gets tough at first before it gets rewarding -especially if you subject yourself to the process of real professional training.

I said all I said because you made your options Architecture vs Civil Engineering. That said, PLEASE CONSIDER AVOIDING THE TWO COMPLETELY. Go for IT (your maths and physics will come in handy). The world has changed. There are easier ways to attain professional fulfilment. IT is versatile. if you are skilled, you will be sought after in every sector and qualify for most immigration programmes. Don't take my word for it, do a google search -compare entry-level salaries of IT professionals and Architecture graduates (ENTRY LEVEL). Search sites like indeed and glassdoor. Also, check occupations in demand for immigration programmes. Don't do any course that limits you to Nigeria, or with which you will have issues transitioning to work abroad even if you succeed in immigrating. IT qualifications are universal. Architecture and Civil engineering licences are local. For example, I am a registered Architect in Nigeria, but I will not be considered an architect in the UK unless I go through the process of acquiring their licence.

I hope you find my '2 kobo' opinion helpful

Architecture is not easy sir the sleepless nights I have/having is out of this world from lectures making you redo a work 5-10times to archaic lectures who wants you to design with pencils because that was how the where taught. I never said it was easy. Mind you the stress is based on Nigerian standard of education. However, for someone in a similar discipline, picking up on archi is a matter extra effort. As a civil engineering student I did three semesters of Architectural courses. Truth is Architecture should be an option in Civil Engineering. If you read old text books on Surveying, Architecture , building, majority where written by Civil Engineers.

Bro, look at the profile of those giving u advice and know where to pitch ur tent. Im a civil engineer and I must tell u the truth, architecture has no single advantage over civil engineering in the present day Nigeria. In fact, no course really has an edge in today's Nigeria - there's no job. As a civil engineer in Nigeria, u can do everything an architect does and even more. The truth of the matter is that there's no job in Nigeria, but a civil engineer has all the options an architect has and more. Architect focuses only on buildings and civil engineers can also do that, but on the flip side, a civil engineer can work on roads, drainage, water supply, construction management, surveying and a host of others; whereas an architect only works on buildings!

N.B: If I were to advise, go for electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, chemistry, physics or mathematics if u are an excellent student. After many years you will thank me.
Good advice bro. I'm a civil engineer too, not regretting being one but all the three softwares I have, I earn more money in architectural design than staadpro and civil cad.

Well, there are 4 options or more(depending on the University) in civil engineering.
1. Structural Engineering.
2. Water Resources Engineering.
3. Highway and transportation Engineering.
4. Public Health Engineering
5. Geotechnical Engineering (few schools offer this option).

You usually choose a one to specialize on in your 2nd/3rd year(again depending on the University). If you hate mathematics, run very far away from Structural Engineering and Geotechnical Engineering. Water Resources, public health and highway engineering doesn't involve much maths, but you must pass some courses in structural before you can go deeper into these other three.

So make your choice, either way as far as it's engineering you can never escape the mathematics aspect of it.

Architects draw buildings and give beauty to buildings.
Civil Engineers do the Calculations of the workability and sustainability of all the beautiful things which the architect introduced in the building.
They do different things.
Now, a civil engineer does more.
A civil engineer can design and construct other things apart from buildings such as bridges, dams, steel-structures, roads, flood-control e.t.c

Visualization and rendering are fun. It can also help you get entry-level jobs as a beginner. But as a professional Architect, it is not the high ticket skill that will make you serious money. It's a good-to-have skill, and these days anyone (including artists), who master the use of software can learn and be proficient in rendering. If that is what you want to do, great -but an Architecture degree can do a lot more for you.

The high ticket architecture skills include detailed construction documentation, contract administration, and project management. These require advanced knowledge, training and experience. To land important roles in these skills in the future, you need professional certification. And professional certification in Nigeria (by ARCON) requires an M.Sc.

It all boils down to asking yourself what you want. I'll advise you to get the M.Sc -just so that you don't limit your options, in case you want to change your mind in the future. Also, master your rendering. it will help you a lot at the beginning of your career. As you advance in your career though, you will find that the bigger opportunities are in contract administration and deliverables in the later and more complex project stages.

If you have the means to do your masters abroad, then you may consider doing an MSc in something other than architecture but related (e.g. Building Information Modelling -this is increasingly becoming a big one in developed countries)
