65 is not a baby age. He should look into something less tedious to operate and not too tacky to understand. Sales is good but for how long can he do the running round and lifting?

Service providing is his best bet in my own opinion.

Less chances of been cheated on by staffs since he will always be available and rules of engagement can be set tuned to his taste without violating any law of the market.

He can open a classic barbing saloon and still have money to run his life while the business grow into a full blown one.

He can open a sim registration outlet. That comes with a wonderful ROI depending on location of his store.

So much more he can do

You guys will just come online and give nonsense advise.Do you think it’s easy to be Dangote cements supplier?A close friend with over 10m wanted to be Dangote supplier, but was fraustrated and had no option than to fixed the money with a bank.
Fact is that, operating a business in Nigeria is no longer easy and hardly you see a business that survive within 3yrs.
The old man should just fixed the money for a period of time with interest

He is too old to go into any business he has no previous experience.
He should not die of heart attack because the young guys he may employ may take undue influence of his inexperience to deprive him of his possibly retirement money.
I will advise that he put his money in a fixed deposit and tell the bank to release certain amount of money, say N50K monthly for his upkeep and spend the rest of his life to enjoy his money.
In addition,he can have a shop in front of his house where he can be selling pencils,Biro eraser for students in the morning, go back and sleep and sell fire wood or coal or kerosene in the evening in the locality.
Just petty trading to keep himself busy and do exercise in the morning and evening.
My options though

Lovely advice at his age he should enjoy his money.

Charcoal business in a middle class environment. They will come to do the offloading while he packages it with the help of any young relatives.

Nylon business/bags of pure water/you can build an industrial cold room for him to store bags of water for hawkers.

Kerosene business is also very lucrative as well/especially when he sells coal by the side

This retail business is the only thing I see here but it must be for a non-perishable commodity

Not a good idea for someone of that age who has never done business before.

If he wants to avoid being cheated in this business then he needs to be ready to do stock taking of all the items in the store at least once every 2 weeks

This business requires a lot of leg work because he needs to get customers then try and pull them away from their current suppliers

Op if you want the old gentleman to develop high blood pressue in the next 6 months then invest in this business, if not then avoid it by all means

If he invests in this business they will cheat him since he knows nothing about the different kinds of wood. They will justy be giving him rubbish stories about how business is not going well meanwhile they will be diverting the sales proceeds to another account

This business also requires some level of experience and energy which I'm not sure a 65 year old retiree has

Sankabson, I beg you in the name of whatever you worship do not invest in haulage business. That business requires strong hand and 100% monitoring otherwise your drivers will frustrate you.
Those guys have plenty of stories - If tyre did not burst hydraulic hose will burst. If VIO did not catch them it will be FRSC and if it's not that then they will tell you that the truck broke down in the middle of a thick forest.

Some will use your truck to be doing private business, the money will be going into their pocket while the wear and tear on the truck and other expenses will be on your head!

In fact if you put your money in this business as a passive investor just know that you have set fire to your money!

Na who dey still invest money for business centre these days?

Investing and running a POS business requires someone who is young and tech savvy so he can quickly understand the latest trends.

Also be aware that there are a lot of scams in the POS business space and a 65year old man may not quickly catch on when he is being scammed.

You are very knowledgeable. You know about so many businesses very well. How come?

Ibadan is not that commercial compared to warri where I am currently, but if you want to start up a business with such an amount you have to consider what is trending and go for business that isn't trending and you know the community or the area is lacking. Is there any agricultural business in your area, like poultry farming or fish farming?. If yes then consider the sales of the following below.
Bird feed,
Fish feed.

I'm an electrical engineering, my job is erection of power transmission tower and stringing of lines both 330kv and 132kv. If you have a business name or company name I'll introduce you to companies that give out contract to us and also get workers for you. Well, the contract is less stressful and rewarding. If you value it contact me for details.

Depending on your location, palm oil business is so lucrative and profitable. With 3.5 Million, you can go into just a 3 months storage and if the price appreciate, you can gain x2 of what you put into the business.
This year,April to be precisely i bought red palm oil@ 8500 per 25litres rubber,as at today 9th July...I'm selling it 15,000 naira. Check out the gains.

Dont rush into any business.

He should Start with accessing his life.

1. What does he have now i.e land, property, skills
And seek to use that to his advantage

For example if he has rural land, he could plant vegetable and harvest every 3/4 months. If in a sub urban area he could rent out his land as an event centre.
If he has skills, he could be a consultant.

He should not.enagge in businesses he has no idea about and requires some form of energy.

2. He should invest in his health, priority at 65 should be to enjoy life and stay in good health.

3. Get his will sorted, not because of fear of death. But because it's the right thing to do.

4. Present Insterest Rate in Banks are too low, and inflation will often catch up with your funds there. So leaving it in the bank is the last option.

In summary, Guys. God willing most of us will be 65 some day. What are you doing now to make life easy for yourself then?

Old age is a scary time for many men. It's a time some of your loved ones can easily discard you, your friends begin to die. Even your kids might 1st listen to thier mum before you. Women enjoy sympathy from children, church, society than Men do.

May God teach us to number our days so we can apply out hearts to wisdom.

Couples should have these discussions more often.

Ultimately, Regardless of if you are working or business man. Invest in real estate, stocks for times like these. E get why.

That's a wrong mindset.. most of those foreign investors in Nigeria now are elderly Lebanese, Indian and Chinese people in their sixties and seventies creating wealth for their home country and Nigeria.

Life starts at 60yrs abeg. Their wealth of experience is needed to provide solutions and move our economy forward.
I have heard u sir. Can u pls ask those foreign investors if that was their first business ?
These are people that have been in business for years and decided to spread their tentacles to Nigeria.
If someone needs a business idea at 65, it shows he hasn't really been in business all thru his active years.

Business isnt a child's play and running business in Nigeria is another issue on its own.

His priority now should be his health and to enjoy the rest of his life.

I am a business owner and i know what i'm saying

Take drink it ,you won the best comment of the year, they are all saying sell this sell that, the best business u can use ur money do now service rendring,

Take my experience for example have sell provision and ladies handbag in main market, selling is not that profitable especially when inflation arise, but services doesn't really affected by inflation and they can't cheat u easily unlike selling commodities, the op should just go into berbing salon or laundry business, employ boys that really wants to work.

Sir
U could set up a solar showroom/ retail store
Where u can
Sell portable (durable) solar products ( products’ integrity is VERY IMPORTANT)
The showroom can also serve as an office for
Estate agent ( which anyone can do regardless of educational background/age)
U would get commissions once in a while from that
I believe this u can do with 700/750k
Please get a nice car with a/c for 700/750k wey u go dey drive go office everyday (don’t do Uber or Cabby or any transport biz abeg) the insult dey too much for youngman sef not to talk of ELDERLY PERSON
I don’t like senior men entering bus grin especially for Naija.

joinnow:

Why Nairalander always ask this kind of questions without giving more details.
Let me start with.
What is his passion
What is his hobby
What is his skills
What is his experience
Then we can pick from the universal subset to direct him which business to go for.
What of if I tell you go and buy 6 Keke and put for challenge to odina or ojoba. And be making 18,000 daily
What of if I tell you to buy 3micra and use as taxi and be making 12kdaily
What if I tell you to buy India tractor and hire out at 10k everyday
What of I tell him to open mini bakery and sell every evening at orita
What of using just 1.5 million to open pig farm and the 10 Gilt gave birth to 5 each you have 50 x 3 = 150 piglet in a year. Note some pig give birth to 14 at once. What of if I tell him to put 3mlm into a bank account that pays 5% monthly in Nigeria.
What of if he bought 50 wheel barrow and make 50 uniform and hire it out daily and make 10,000 daily.
What getting a water tanker more biz during g dry season.
You can ask me more

Easier said than done. First, do you know the cost of feed for your pigs. Also, to have standard pen for your pig is no small investment cos you pen must be very strong (they can break down almost any pen especially when on heat), must be easy to clean with a good waste management system cos pig can sure out a lot of waste in a very short time, which also brings me to the need for a lot of water. So you are practically pump water continuously. The list goes on but if you are able to make that capital investment and sustain over time, it's alot of hardworking, commitment and due diligence. Then it's going to pay off.

Speaking from experience.
