The World Cup is the ultimate. You can't use an annual competition like UCL which gives Messi an unfair advantage. You are in effect giving Messi 4 opportunities to shine for each opportunity Pele got.

If we are to dive deep into Messi's UCL stats and we find out that he scored a huge chunk of his goals in the group stages whereby CR7 scored a huge chunk in the knockout stages you might cool down on touting this UCL achievement.

Pele didn't play UCL. The top competition they both played in which was the World Cup Pele still holds the record for most assists and most titles.

Most people who watched Pele say the Youtube clips don't do him justice. Imagine if the only clips of Messi that are available in 50 years time are only games he played for Argentina, games he played in his 30s, and a few league clips from between ages 17 and 30.
