Obaseki Vs Oba Of Benin: FG Reveals Who Will Take Possession Of Looted Benin Bronze

The Federal Government has said that in line with operative conventions and laws, it will take ownership of the 1,130 looted Benin bronzes expected from Germany.


Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information and Culture, disclosed this in Lagos at a news conference on Saturday on the efforts by the federal government to repatriate looted smuggled artefacts from around the world.

He was reacting to the controversy that had trailed who will take the possession of the expected artefact between the Edo state Governor, Godwin Obaseki and the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II.

DAILY POST reports that while Obaseki showed preference for a private trust to take custody and manage the artefacts, the Oba wanted the artefacts stolen from Benin Palace in 1987 to be returned to a museum to be built within the Palace premises.

Mohammed, however, said the federal government of Nigeria was the entity recognised by international law as the power in control of antiquities originating from the country.

“The Federal Government is aware of the widely-reported controversy over who will take possession of the Benin Bronzes when they are returned from Germany.

“Let me state clearly here that, in line with international best practice and the operative Conventions and laws, the return of the artefacts is being negotiated bilaterally between the national governments of Nigeria and Germany."

“Nigeria is the entity recognised by international law as the authority in control of antiquities originating from Nigeria.’’

“What we’re saying in essence is that the federal government will take possession of these antiquities, because it’s its duty to do so, in line with the extant laws,’’ he added.

I don't know what Obaseki want to do with traditional ancient artefacts.
If they're kept with the government, another government will take over someday and might not value those things infact many might be stolen.


Those artefacts are more esteemed to traditionalists, than the government.



Oba of Benin is the rightful person who deserve to take custody of those things and house them in the palace.

It is not right for the federal government to hold on to those things.

Baba might take a loan and use those things as collateral.

The artifacts should be returned to the Benin Royal palace. If not, FG should have them. On no condition should they be given to the state government.

I really don't understand why people are sentimental and bias about this issue.

It makes more sense for the Edo state Government to keep it since where the bronzes were taken are now under their jurisdiction.

The reason it should not be handed over to the Oba of Benin is because the traditional system has no recognized role under the constitution and there are no checks and balances to check the excesses of the traditional body. For instance, what stops the present Oba from keeping those bronzes as his personal property if handed over to him.

The federal government should concentrate on repatriation of stolen funds from government coffers and borrowing money from China and stay out this matter because these artifacts are elder brothers to Nigeria as an entity.

This simply means both the palace and the State govt will make individual proposals to the FG and the FG will decide what to do to the artifacts.

The State government has a better plan for the artifacts with the Edo Museum for West African Arts.

I bet even some other States, especially the Lagos museum, will benefit and have a share from the almost 2,000 pieces.
