If maradona and Pele played in the same generation, there's still a high possibility that one of them might not keep up with the high standard of the other. Messi and Ronaldo pushing each other for up to 10yrs was no mean feat at all. It'll be very difficult for 2 great players to go toe-to -toe in that high standard for 4 seasons how much more doing so consistently for up to a decade.

At a certain time even Rooney was adjudged to have a higher ceiling than Ronaldo, but we know within 3-5years time, Ronaldo na the baba of the two.

All I'm saying is that if both of them are in same generation, we might not even be revering both individually the way we're doing now
