Ganduje, a Governor in Kano or a Taliban Mullah?

By Saminu Aliyu

Recent occurrences in Kano have pushed me into wanting to comment on the unfortunate issues that led to the suppression, subsequent arrest and incarceration of Malam Abduljabbar Nasiru Kabara. Because as a practicing Sunni Muslim I am yet to be convinced by the claims put together by the coalition of our clerics in Kano in connivance with the Kano state government.

The image displayed to the public is that of governor Ganduje accepting and imposing a state religion in Kano, which if anyone refutes will be dealt with by his government.

Every Muslim that has bothered to acquire a little beyond the basic Islamic knowledge is aware that there are in existence some fake traditions (Hadiths) attributed to Prophet Muhammad (SAW). What is more is that they are not only fake or lies but also down play and insult the personality and in some cases even the morality of the Prophet (SAW).

These fake traditions (Hadith) are all over and contained even in books like Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim and they have provided access to the enemies of Islam to promote phobia against not only Islam, but also the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad (SAW) as a person.

We are all witnesses to what Salman Rushdie wrote in his book called the 'Satanic Verses'. He used such traditions (Hadiths) sarcastically to insult Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

Such traditions (Hadiths) have also been used in cartoons to insult Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and made to go viral on the social media.

These are things that always anger the Muslims and push them into reactions that sometimes even portray them as lacking tolerance, being fanatical or even extremist.

Malam Abduljabbar made effort to enlighten the Muslims of the dangers of those traditions (Hadiths) and the need for Muslims to denounce and disown them. This is in brief what has formed the basis of his study sessions that could not be tolerated by a lot of Sunnis because such traditions (Hadiths) form the root of their ideological inclinations and are concocted and transmitted by some people they revere.

As a Sunni Muslim I am aware of the fact that we have regard for the companions of the holy Prophet (SAW) because of the role they have played in the early days of Islam. But I don't personally believe that they are sin free nor do I believe they are in any way better than the holy Prophet (SAW).

But unfortunately for a lot of our scholars, they present the companions of the Prophet (SAW) in a manner as though they mean more to them than the holy Prophet (SAW). They choose to accept a fake tradition (Hadith) because of the said companion that narrated the tradition (Hadith) even if the tradition (Hadith) downplays or insults the personality of the holy Prophet (SAW).

It is this issue that our Sunni clerics in Kano have used in castigating and suppressing Malam Abduljabbar who they have controversially accused of inciting the public and committing blasphemy against the Prophet (SAW), an accusation he has since condemned and dismissed.

They went to the extent of pulling the state government into the crises by likely misinforming the governor thereby turning governor Ganduje into a Taliban Mullah in Kano by accepting to wrongly support fanatical sectarianism as against freedom of religion and association provided by the Nigerian Constitution.

The government on its side subsequently lost its sense of liberalism and embraced fundamentalism by openly displaying where it belongs and even using state resources to that extent. The government has been pushed into this embarrassing situation founded by the hungry clerics surrounding it.

The most unwise thing that has been done so far is the arrest and detention of the embattled cleric by the state government after being controversially accused of blasphemy and inciting the public.

Definitely the government only appears to be suppressive, sectarian and fanatical on this matter by displaying itself as inciting sectarian tension and hatred among citizens by simply identifying with one sect against the other.

Is high time the governor comprehends this matter and resolves the matter amicably and not allowing some hungry clerics around the government lead it astray.

Lovely read!

Not a Muslim myself but there should be a separation between state and religion!

But you lots up north have used same measure against those who are not even of your religious stock not minding that the country is a secular state.

This is why such issue as Islamist terrorism can never leave the north as it has come to stay like it is in other Islamic countries where you have sharia laws.

If nigeria was to be a normal healthy country there was no way sharia would be allowed in a secular state like Nigeria.

The write up would have been better if you give us some examples of such hadith so that others can read and possibly debate it.

Kano is one of the few northern states that stand a chance to be our pride but unfortunately, religion is tarnishing it. Islam and Christianity must be kept where they belong if this country is going to ever smell development because we take them too seriously.

I was following BBC Hausa the other time when a report about the murder of a Pakistani man who had been ACQUITTED from the charges of blasphemy. To my shock, 70% of the comments praised the killer even though he was found not guilty. And then you wonder why the north has so many terrorists.

Clearly, Kano is going downhill. Challenging fake hadiths that have done nothing but to make our religion look like a gang of bloodsuckers and cavemen has now become a crime punishable by the statecheesy.

I'm sure they will try to sentence him to death based on the same fake hadiths even though the Qur'an has provided the only situations that can warrant killing (blasphemy and apostasy are NOT part of them).

As a muslim, I'm supposed to be offended by this but I have to agree with you. I saw the report you are talking about and it was unfortunate to say the least. Even Arabs are not as fanatical as northerners and it's disgusting. Funny enough, we mostly pretend to care about the religion without following commandments like contentment, honesty, seeking of knowledge, etc.

Any educated person that goes through the Hadiths will find serious fault there and while some genuinely came from the prophet, a great chunk of them are mere fabrications

when the table is turned against them they will remember that Nigeria constitution guaranteed freedom of religion and when it favours them you will here kill him.

By the time the north will wake up, it will be too late for them.

When Zamfara introduced Sharia in early 2,000, every northerner applauded him, thinking they were doing that to spite the infidel/Kafur in charge of the nation's government, OBJ.

But today, look at what the same Zamfara has turned to !

The north east has become a no go area just bcs of the agitation to be governed by Sharia.

Let the north and their governors continue to breed extremists, they are the one that will suffer the consequences. In the same north, Bandits, killer herders, Boko Haram, Iswap, the list goes on and on. And yet, these governors are not ready to learn.

If we do not have Muslims in other part of the country one would have said, it's not easy to separate religion from the state. But then, since the north wants to be Muslims more than Muhammad, let them continue.

Las las, every one go bear him papa name. By the time free oil money is no longer available to fight insecurities created by their extremism, Somalia would be a child's play.
