ALPHA JET AIRCRAFT CRASHES IN ZAMFARA STATE, PILOT RESCUED

On 18 July 2021, at about 12.45 pm, a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Alpha Jet aircraft, returning from a successful air interdiction mission between the boundaries of Zamfara and Kaduna State, came under intense enemy fire which led to its crash in Zamfara State. Luckily, the gallant pilot of the aircraft, Flight Lieutenant Abayomi Dairo, successfully ejected from the aircraft. Using his survival instincts, the pilot, who came under intense ground fire from the bandits, was able to evade them and sought refuge in nearby settlements awaiting sunset. Using the cover of darkness and his phone set for navigation, Flight Lieutenant Dairo was able to elude several bandits’ strongholds and maneuvered his way to a Nigerian Army Unit, where he was finally rescued.

It is instructive to note that upon receipt of the news of the crash, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, had directed that all efforts must be emplaced to rescue the pilot. Accordingly, NAF Intelligence Surveillance Reconnaissance (ISR) platforms and helicopter gunships provided close air support to NAF Special Forces and Nigerian Army troops who were able to locate the crash site and the pilot’s parachute, while also combing nearby locations for any sign of the pilot. It is gladdening to note that while in hiding, Flight Lieutenant Dairo confirmed that the presence of NAF aircraft within the vicinity of the crash site helped in scaring the bandits who were after him, thus enabling him to find refuge and escape to a safe location.

It is important to also recall that only recently, the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, had directed the Armed Forces of Nigeria to do all it takes to flush out criminal elements in Katsina, Zamfara and Kaduna States. It is in fulfilment of this directive that the NAF, in conjunction with surface forces, has in the last 2 weeks mounted intensive day and night air interdiction operations against bandits and their hideouts, especially in these 3 states. Through these intensive air operations, hundreds of bandits have been neutralized and several of their hideouts destroyed.

Despite the setback of yesterday’s crash, the NAF remains committed towards fulfilling Mr President’s mandate as well as other constitutional roles assigned to it. The willingness, readiness and tested ability of the NAF remains unshaken and unwavering as it continues to carry out its assigned roles.

Kindly bring the information to the awareness of the general public. Thank you.

Brooo, e shock me o. Na from clap e dey turn to dance.

CDS and CAS should rework the air strategy for higher impact and less human/material/machine costs.

We have lost too many aircraft in recent memory. Doesn't bode well for future acquisitions IMHO.

In the strange situation whereby we are defeating terrorists, herdsmen, kidnapers, separatists but overall insecurity is worst now than ever, exemplified by common bandits attaining the level of freedom and sophistication needed to shoot down military aircrafts, when are Nigerians going to unit in calling for the resignation of Mr President?

I’m not trying to be controversial and I have not ethnic or political axe to grind in anticipation of beheading anyone. I’m genuinely interested in opinions on how bad security in any democracy needs to get for the leader of that nation to resign.

Ironically , the rise of groups like IPOB, Oduduwa and Social Media Ethno baiting strengthens the grip on power of any president that plays ethnic politics. Why should I leave power or not manipulate situations to retain power when being in power safeguards my ethnic group. Igbos claim that when they gain power, they will deal with my Fulani people. Simplistic, sure, but essentially accurate, playing the ethic game erodes democracy and enables everyone to forget simple questions such as, when will the President Resign?

The bolded is the main topic.

Insecurity and victory/defeat can only be dealt with after that has been cleared up.

Obviously it was for the safety of the pilot.
You don't expect them to divulge sensitive information when a rescue operation is ongoing.

It's either he was hit meaning he was flying too low(which is unlikely since it was a night operation) or the Aircraft itself developed a technical fault midair(most likely). It's high time we ground or phase out the Alpha jets or use them & do trade by barter with any country that will give us infantry hardwares or spare parts etc. We kuku no get pass two currently that are operational, the JF 17s & the Tucanos will fill the void.

Damn. U mean we don't have more than 2 alpha jets operational? Ha!. We need to consider two squadrons of m 346s. This is unacceptable

No they don't, they're onlyy armed with pistols. Tavor/AKs aren't convenient to carry putting into cognizance the compact nature of the cockpit, this is aside the safety risk involved in carrying such weapons in case there be need for ejection/bailout from the Aircraft.
Even if they carry those weapons it won't do much against a determined heavily armed enemies such as the bandits and terrorists. The best bet for Pilots is to activate SERE training and evade till help comes. Forget all this Hollywood hogwash, the chances of a pilot surviving a fire fight in an enemy territory is less than 40% them no be infantry men.
