It's either he was hit meaning he was flying too low(which is unlikely since it was a night operation) or the Aircraft itself developed a technical fault midair(most likely). It's high time we ground or phase out the Alpha jets or use them & do trade by barter with any country that will give us infantry hardwares or spare parts etc. We kuku no get pass two currently that are operational, the JF 17s & the Tucanos will fill the void.
What gave you the impression that we don't have more than 2 Alpha jets operational.

They prepared it in a hurry. Broad strokes requirements. Don't forget the Minister Of Finance went public to say the military were delaying on specifying their requirements for the supplementary budget.
New service chiefs and new GOCs and someone expected requirements to be ready in just a few weeks whilst a war is going on and the Navy was launching Falcon Eye and
Under the same supplementary budget proposal , published by the budget office this was the initial distribution . Air force alone getting slightly over $1Billion . that is N418Billion Naira. Out of N700Billion + . WIth Army getting N104Billion and Navy N88Billion also SSS noticeably absent

However, somewhere along the line the distribution changed . Airforce getting N200Billion + only. SSS, now being included.
Whatever it is , i hope they made the right equipment choice and hope they get delivered quick.

Yes i was so excited to see detailed budget details after seeing over N700Billion on security , i expected to see 12 Units of M346 or Yak 131 at N199Billion or 30 CH5 at N16Billion but it is just an overall summary. Even those in N/Assembly don't have the details on which kind of Jets the Airforce are buying. As long as it can take off the ground and fly na so we go take am grin grin grin
but we are sha happy airforce is getting $500Million+

The person who got the details for me got them in bits , i told him not to bother sef with the rest since they would not be be anything interesting. When they land we go know abi are they invisible cheesy ?

Apart from Army getting $118Million for Vehicle
DHQ is also spending some billions for vehicles.

You suppose use your "source" to find out the additional aircraft requirement and the unknown vehicles .

Right now now, things would be a little bit speculative. Until when the funds are disbursed then you start getting some info on what we are going for.
Fingers crossed smiley

I know its expected to blow your own trumpet but you are moving to the point of delusion.

Please check the Air-forces of S. Africa, Angola, Ethiopia, Kenya and Sudan before you make such a statement, unrivaled domination across West Africa a very big YES but Sub Saharan Africa a very big NO.

You are not a JF17 fan. Me too but we need it. Block 3 won't come before 2023. We need at least 3 more JF17 Block 2 and at least 6 nos of M346 FA for LIFT / quick response CAS
On the contrary, I'm a big fan of the JF-17, and I think it's an excellent aircraft, well suited for Nigeria's current security challenges.

However I don't think the JF-17 is an aircraft for the future, as you know aircrafts are supposed to last a minimum of 30 years in service. Threats would change in that time, and I don't think the JF-17 is the ideal aircraft to deal with that threat.

I'm proposing that we cease on any further purchases of the JF-17, invest in a capable LIFT aircraft, the M346 is ideal, we do not need the FA, as this would mean additional costs.

Purchase another batch of 12 Tucanos.

Increase our Attack helicopter and MI-17 numbers.

Invest in tactical transport aircrafts as the C-130s are old.

In a couple years time the SU-75 would be mature(in the event it goes into full production), purchase that instead.

Was thinking. Why wasn't the suoer Tucano transported in a heavy lifter?
I think the method employed is a good way of re-training the pilots, and also showing Nigerians and other potential customers it has no problem flying around,
In other words, the US, are confidently showing off its reliability and trust.

Aside South Africa and maybe Ethiopia Nigeria is far ahead of other subsaharan nations manpower wise our problem over the years have been getting the requisite hardwares to operate at full capacity which the NAF have being making conscious effort since 2015 to bridge. Even at our current operating capacity which in my opinion is not up to the full potential of NAF, if there is an air superiority contest btw Nigeria and the combined Airforces of West Africa today it's gonna be a rout.

I disagree with your suggestion on the JF13 specifically forbthe Block 3 (even though I agree Block 2 may be too transitory in terms of capability versus value for money

We may need 3/9 ratio for the M346 - LIFT/Fighter Attack.

The SU 75 is not happening. Russia would not be developing that aircraft in the next ten years.

I agree we should consider increase Super Tucano fleet in 3s and 4s over the next four years. The aircraft has other civillian nation building applications aside from its potent internal security uses.

I would like to digress a little bit,
Have you all noticed that no more security meetings again at the state house ever since IPOB and unknown gunmen in the east calm down? Does it mean that bandits, herdmen killings are not pressing enough to warrant having security meetings? A fighter Jet was brought down in this country not at war and
nothing was said, infact, it's the more you look the less you see

We cannot talk about the Block 3 because the specs of the aircraft are not publicly available.

So you cannot say what is good and what is not.

On LIFT, we currently have aircrafts that are in dire need of replacements, Nigeria has sucked the life out of the Alpha jet and L-39 and we need them replaced.

The M346FA is a purely light attack jet, not a LIFT aircraft, I don't see why we should get the FA if we need a light attack jet we should just stick with the JF-17.

Unless you provide verifiable evidence your comments on the SU-75 is simply hogwash.

This must be a joke I guess. Till tomorrow we still send personnels to Southafrica for flight training. When it comes to aviation the Southafricans are the best both in civil and military aviation in Africa. They're even into Aircraft manufacturing .

Underestimate the Ethiopians with over 90yrs experience in the air at your own peril.
I want to believe you're referring to the air component of the military.

I can also send you a list of military pilots that come to Nigeria for training.

South Africa has an advanced military industry, but they still depend heavily on importation of military components and systems.

As far as militaries in Africa go, Egypt , Algeria and Morocco are ahead.

South Africa and Nigeria are regional heavy weights.

Our militaries are structured differently.

South Africa is not ahead of Nigeria.

You don't judge a military with a battle, they have bigger headaches with the Egyptians and Sudanese over the Nile brouhaha. That bandits are holding sway in the northwest does that imply that our military is useless? You see my brother your analogy is faulty.

Lol! My guy na my constituency be this o! You see aviation in Africa leave it for the Southafricans. With an SCAA license you can fly in the US(though conversion to FAA might be mandated), infact it's harder to get an SCAA license than the FAA license.
Nigeria no doubt have capable personnels but we don't have the structures/organisation on ground or if I'm to be a bit harsh individually we're very good but collectively as a group we're almost useless and this is in all facet of administration in the country. Go to NCAT Zaria and see how things are been done anyhow, infact the helicopter flight school established in Enugu by Arthur Eze and managed by NAF have been grounded after only about 7yrs or so of operation.
70% of instructors (Military Pilots) at International helicopter flying school Enugu hold Southafrican flying license.
