Reno Omokri :

Dear Nonny:

Itsekiris and the Binis had Igbo slaves for centuries before British colonialism. After the British banned slavery, we were forced to set them free. Some of them returned to Igbo land, others remained with us and gradually formed a new language called ******* (an Itsekiri word which we used to call them while they were our slaves). There are about 200,000 ******* still with us.
(I will not reveal the name of this tribe called *******, because I do not want to offend them, but they are in Delta state)
If they speak, an Igbo person will understand some of what they say, while Itsekiris, Binis and even European Portuguese people will understand them too. Those of them who chose to return to Igbo land have Igbo names that sound like Itsekiri or Benin names, for example Iweka, and many names beginning with Oba or Iken.
That is how some of our names and also Benin names went into the Igbo lexicon.
We have century old carvings in Ode Itsekiri and Benin depicting Igbo slaves, which we sold to the Portuguese via our ancient pre colonial port called Ogidigben. The grandfather of the present Oba of Benin showed some of these carvings to the world famous British anthropologist, Sir David Attenborough in 1973. The video is on YouTube. When you see the carving, even you will have no doubt that the person is Igbo.
Because of the sheer number of Igbo slaves we sold at Ogidigben, the Portuguese named the town Escravos, which means slave in Portuguese. Till today, many people still call Ogidigben Escravos.
We also sold slaves in another town called Burutu, which the Portuguese renamed Forcados (meaning forced labourer, which is a nicer way of saying slaves).
Obviously, I am not too proud of this history. I wish it never happened. History is not always pleasant. I am only revealing it to you because you are getting the wrong idea of linkages between our two peoples.

Hmmm. Just like to shake table. I appreciate reading about the origin of the foreign names in Warri but don't want this kind of stuff on slavery that do not bind us shared in this manner in our history books now that history is back in the school curriculum.
More studies are required because we are in the era of history revisionism especially from that same axis of Nigeria he mentioned.

Even the Itsekiris were under the Bini. Reno is being smart by half for saying the Itsekiri and the Binis. It was actually the Binis.

The Bini empire was the only one in Nigeria the Portuguese and later the British referred to as ‘Great’ in all of their text. Its influence spanned into the south west to present day lagos, ondo & ekiti, beyond the river Niger up to the kalabari and even cross rivers.

Its was for the untainted loyalty of the king in calabar to the Bini throne that he choose to be banished there by the British.

This history most likely connects Ikwerre too. They are all Bini slaves from time.

And so what?
We have descendants of former slaves in Lagos and Ogun state, it's no big deal.

What this article implies is that the places named Forcados and Escravos are named after the Delta Igbo slaves of then Benin Empire. This is huge. So whenever you want to refer to a proud Benin slave amongst the Delta Igbos you can call him Onye Escravos or Onye Forcados.

Blessed are the Igbo people whose eyes first behold the RISING SUN in its joyous splendour every morning before it moves on for the day's journey?

Proudly Igbo. Proudly republican. Proudly enterprising. Proudly bullish and loud.

Reno Omokri should jump into orimmiri Ngene with his daydreaming slave master tales. I am not moved.

More Bini than the Oba!
I mean they think they are more related to bini's than the South East igbos, they claim to be a distinct ethnic group, especially the Ika, ikwerri

It is also funny that African Americans are not paying homage to their roots daily.
Some are even dragging America with "real" Americans.

The Africa there is enough homage to their roots, I have never heard an African American deny that their ancestors were brought from Africa, but nnamdi from rivers state will say I'm not igbo, I'm ikwerri we are a distinct ethnic group from igbo we migrated from bini

You must be stupid, way did he say Ika people?

Look blood relationship,we have with benin is too deep.We were never slaves,we even fought the benins sometimes when we have disagreement.

Your hatred for Ika people will destroy you.

It is only Ika people who were able to fight and give our bini brothers trouble....

Ask around, only Ika people were good at fighting the Oba and even when it comes to diabolism, binis are very careful with Ikas because we are too good at it.

In past when there is a threat to binis, they will seek assistance from Ika worriors to join them to fight.Like the benin/Idah war.
Ikas assisted the benins.

In as much as I am not a fan of Reno but as a historian, his narration are historical in order but history as a field of study in the humanities ( all of humanities) is open to interpretations and debates.

One fact is that slave trade transversed all the nooks and crannies of West Africa with those from the coastals deeply involved. However, I will not agree or disagree with Reno. I will chew on this one and check my books.

Many Ikas you see today especially the elite are from mainly ancient royal houses Even right from the time of Ogisos.

In agbor today, after the dein then Jim Ovia family is the most powerful by tradition .Jim Ovia himself is an Ika man of bini ancestry.

Even Okowa, their family came from benin.

The founders of Idumesah are Esan people from Ugboha led by a certain man I can't remember his name now.....My mother is that lineage.

Later Ndokwa and Aniocha people settled among the esan who came first.

In Idumesah today, there is one quarter that produce the Okparu-Uku(Big Okpara) and the 3 quarters will produce their okpara to lead them.

Even there are older people in other three quarter, they can be crown okpara-uku.It is only people from my quarters that must get that position.Once you crown the okpara of that my mum quarter, authomatically you become Okpara-Uku of them entire Idumesah.

Other okparas in the other 3 quarters may be your senior by age but they must pay homage to you as their new leader.Just like in UAE were the king of abu-dhabi becomes the president of the country automatically when he become the king.

Initially Idumesah was made up of 7 quarters, but people in the three quarter letter return to were they came from, some remained and resettled among the modern 4 quarters of today.

My mother and her people are given that priviledge because their ancestor from ughoha settled first before the Ndokwa and aniocha people..
