Not semantics

Eko is referred to the area now known as Lagos Island.... The world Eko got it's origin from Benin

Lagos is a name given by the portuguese because it shares semblance with a port city in Portugal bearing the same name and the area includes but not limited to the Lagos Island

You get?

Eko is short for the Yoruba word Ereko which means field

Ereko Market on Lagos Island was where the Ijebu and Egba Yorubas traded it is still there today

Haha! Dreamer. Who did you conquer and took as slaves? What battles did you fight? Did you even have an established monarchial system? When the British came, while the Binis fought and stood firm, didn’t you bend over and took it all?

Or why do you think the catholic culture and priesthood is well rooted in igbos than anywhere else in the south even though they crossed several southern tribes to get to you. You couldn’t resist, after you heard of the fall of your masters - bini throne to the British, you bent over easily. You took it all.

It's not self acclaimed there are indigenous black skins native Americans those ones that looks like black Indians, they don't call themselves African Americans but natives
Oga, there are Black Americans who believe that they're indigenous to America. They also believe that the slave trade never happened. The so-called "indigenous black skins Native Americans" you're talking about may have darker skin compared to other Native Americans, but their physical features already show they aren't Black. Moreover, there was a lot of intermarriage between enslaved Africans and Native Americans. Black people are not indigenous to America.

I salute you not because I agree with you completely but because I could tell you a good student of history. You’re a rare find on nairaland.

Sufferingboy:
Many Ikas you see today especially the elite are from mainly ancient royal houses Even right from the time of Ogisos.

In agbor today, after the dein then Jim Ovia family is the most powerful by tradition .Jim Ovia himself is an Ika man of bini ancestry.

Even Okowa, their family came from benin.

The founders of Idumesah are Esan people from Ugboha led by a certain man I can't remember his name now.....My mother is that lineage.

Later Ndokwa and Aniocha people settled among the esan who came first.

In Idumesah today, there is one quarter that produce the Okparu-Uku(Big Okpara) and the 3 quarters will produce their okpara to lead them.

Even there are older people in other three quarter, they can be crown okpara-uku.It is only people from my quarters that must get that position.Once you crown the okpara of that my mum quarter, authomatically you become Okpara-Uku of them entire Idumesah.

Other okparas in the other 3 quarters may be your senior by age but they must pay homage to you as their new leader.Just like in UAE were the king of abu-dhabi becomes the president of the country automatically when he become the king.

Initially Idumesah was made up of 7 quarters, but people in the three quarter letter return to were they came from, some remained and resettled among the modern 4 quarters of today.

My mother and her people are given that priviledge because their ancestor from ughoha settled first before the Ndokwa and aniocha people..

Actually many years ago I read a report on British double standards when it pertained to their operations on Nigeria; the majority Hausas were about overthrowing their minority Fulani overlords when the British arrived and forced the minority on the majority. In the south, reverse was the case; the minority ijaw tribes were ruling the igbos. When the British came, they suppressed the minority ijaw groups and put them under the majority igbos.

Where did you get that nonesense from? Ijaw has never ruled over the Igbos.
Igbos are too individualistic to be under themselves let alone a minority group.

When the British arrived Igboland, they aptly buttressed that Igbos were stateless and had no kings and each villager decided and controlled their destiny. Where the hell is this story of Ijaws coming from.

Britian has never done anything to favour Igbos in Nigeria. Anything Igbos have today is by sheer hardwork and zeal.

I understand what Reno is doing.
Every tribe in Nigeria will now have the audacity to claim to have ruled over the Igbos and even taken them as slaves.

Reno is a Bigot and idiot.

I believe all that happened because the Ibos had no central leader or King at the time. The Ibos of the old were lead by family heads. Each family wad lead by the eldest person in the family. This, I believe, was the reason why many Ibos were sold into slavery. The Bite of Biafra was one of the most patronized slave routes.

History will humble you. Its not by gragra. Alot of people find it difficult to understand all these about the bini. To them its like, that small bini. What is in Edo state? But life as you know it today is nothing like it was 100, 200, 300 years ago. Let me share a story;

I was at the home of a notable oyo man on Tuesday to felicitate with him. As we were exchanging banters, I hailed him as a great mind from ibadan. His countenance changed. He sat me down and before everyone in his expansive sitting room, educated me.

According to him; he is an oyo man, not ibadan man. He claimed there is a huge difference. Oyo are refined and learned people. I wont go into details about what he had to say about ibadan but he maintained that no notable oyo son will take likely to being referred to as Ibadan. He cautioned me to avoid such a mistake in the future.

For a lot of us outside Oyo, you’d think ibadan was it or so much of the big deal over there. Thats history in play.

Thank you. When I came back to Nairaland after many years of sabbatical it was in the heat of IPOB hate of Rochas Okorocha. My fellow igbos called him Okoroawusa and I am an APC member and a die hard Buhari fan so I adopted it as a moniker. It represents all igbos who are not slaves of Nnamdi Kanu and all he represents as well as the promotion of the idea that we can only progress if we build walls across tribes.
I am sorry if you find it stereotypical.

But we can't even smell the coffee and are tragically passing up the opportunity on the altar of emotionalism.

To distort history for sentimental reasons is not good and Igbos cannot join hands in referring to Ika a fellow Igbo group as slaves simply because Reno said so. There has never been a time all Ikas unanimously claim they came from Bini but rather a few misguided ones getting support from other Nigerians for the single purpose of reducing Igbo area of influence.

Senator wali at constitutional conference to make case of the unique ikwerre identity in 1963 ? Explain further ,
Who was senator wali in 1963?
What Constitutional conference was that, was it federal or regional conference?

What was the population of the ikwerre in 1963?

The Ikwerre people are indigenous people of Rivers State and have been in Rivers state longer the longest. This Benin story is only correct for some Ahoada clans in Rivers state, and was stupidly been peddled by some uninformed ikwerre politicians and sadly this is now being peddled by some learned people who are too lazy to research their own history.

My great grand father was an educated man, and was a custodian of our peoples culture in rivers state, I will share some of that knowledge with anyone listening.

There was nothing understood to be igbo tribe amongst the igboic speaking before the formation of Nigeria. Anyone who understood igbo especially igboic speaking people would just say I understand igbo and then say the name of their clan.

The people who reffered to them as igbo would be people from far away from the old eastern region as most people of the now SS would understand and speak some igbo as a second language as well as the language was an important language for business The only reason why we are all hearing igbo this or igbo that is because of the creation of Nigeria, the people who are igbo speaking bought and sold theirselves for centuries, and never found it necessary to see themselves alike. So for all the hatred igbos have on nigeria, just know that Nigeria is best thing to happen to igbo people, it brought igbo people together (atleast for now, all the SE states together)

In the past the Aros considered their selves to be superior to every other clan in their trade route, other clans like the Nri also thought themselves to be superior as well.

The people who call themselves ikwerre today are actually of diverse origin, Ikwerre land being the last part of the igboic hinterland before the creeks/ocean was settled by different people from different places who came to cash out from the booming slave trade, back then it was easy to get slaves from igboland as their people were in large numbers and they had caste system.

The original Ikwerres were the most powerful igboic people east of the niger and the biggest slave dealers, hence the name iwhurunoha which means in the presence of the greatest men, they were mostly warriors and slave kidnappers who were also into kingdom building and empire advancement which explains the vast amount of land owned by the ikwerres today . Their people controlled the Aro confederacy at a point before their king was dethroned by other warring clans. The original ikwerre people are actually an off shoot of ngwa people, but ikwerreland was inhabited by people from all over. Before the Nigeria/ Nigerian civil war no ikwerre person would take offense with being called igbo, hell, no one would actually introduce theirselve as an igbo man, that would have seem as vague as saying I am african. If you called a person who spoke igbo an igboman, they would not dispute it, as it would basically be understood as a person who can speak igbo, this is true for so many tribes in the SS that are now understood not to be igbo people.

Today, most ikwerre people do not know that a major part of current imo state is ikwerre land, and the ohaji people, Uratta people in Owerri are also ikwere people, and that in their midst are actual people from igbo hinterland who came and settled their. They may only know the Aro Osu people who came in the early 1900s.

I am asking all learned ikwerres to resist the history twisting which bad politicians and bad leaders are trying to use to make them foreigners in the very land that their forefathers were birthed to, fought for and defended.

They can argue that ikwerre wants to be seen as a distinct ethnicity as igbos,(for which I wouldnt see the benefit) but dont let some few selfish people get away with arm twisiting your history for their personal gains, and declaring you non indigenes to a land that you are truly indigenous to.

As a matter of facr if there is any igboic speaking clan that would be argued as the originator/progenator of igbo language and culture, it would be the ikwerre people and the Isu people of imo and anambra state. Because from my findings, the igbo clans in Abia have ancestral ties with the efiks and the ibibios, the Nsukka people have theirs with the the Idoma people. the ebonyi people have their with the ogoja people of cross river, the nothern Anambras and some anioma people have theirs with the igalas, the nothern aniomas have theirs with the binis. The Ikwerres do not have any ancestral ties to any other known group, rather they dominated the lifestyle in the creeks and are responsible for introducing igbo centric cultures to my people in the creeks, when my great grandparents were talking about igbo people they were doing business with from the hinterland, they were actually talking about the Ikwerres, most riverine communities in Rivers state know the ikwerre people as Igbo people according to history.
